Can not use Windows Updater

Unread postby Jent4253 » May 30th, 2009, 10:38 am

I am not able to connect to windows updater or any antivirus website updaters for webroot. I have run combofix, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and ATF cleaner to try and resolve the problem with no luck so far. Here is my Hijack log.

Jent4253,
-----------------------------------------------------------
YOU HAVE NO ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM
Download just one of these free anti-virus programs, update it and run a full scan. Have it fix anything it finds.
Consider this an Emergency until you complete it!-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis. (Right click, Run as Administrator)
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

So we are looking for a fresh HiJackThis log and an Installed programs list, after you install your new, free antivirus.

I downloaded the antivirus software and it did not find anything, just a couple of warnings. I have also included the log from that, just in case it might help.

Jent4253,
Remove Programs Using Control Panel(Vista)
From Vista Orb, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Adobe Reader 7.0.8

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
--------------------------------------------------------
Download the Newest Version of Adobe Reader
  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

If you prefer a simple reader, without plug-ins, that is smaller and faster, take a look at the free Foxit Reader here : http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/
I would recommend the older Foxit version 2.3 only, without the toolbar.
Foxit version 3.0 has the undesirable ASK toolbar, and it's uncertain whether you can avoid it during installation.
--------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ToolBar S&D
Download ToolBar S&D and save to your desktop.
Disable your antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ToolBar S&D.
If you don't know how to disable your AntiVirus, please ask and I will help.
  • Right-click ToolBar S&D.exe and choose "run as administrator".
  • Choose the language, then choose Option 1 (Search)
  • Wait till the end of the scan.
  • Notepad will open containing the report log.
  • Post that log in your next reply.
  • A copy will also be saved in %SystemDrive%\TB.txt. Usually C:\TB.txt

Jent4253,
1 - Run ToolBar S&D
Disable your antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ToolBar S&D.
(You can usually right click the Antivirus icon in the system tray and uncheck guards or Exit).
  • Double-click ToolBar S&D.exe
  • Choose the language, then choose Option 2 (Fix)
  • Deleting Toolbar files / folders / services
  • Deleting Toolbar registry keys
  • Deleting nasty extensions ( XP only )
  • Creating a backup in the folder %SystemDrive%\ToolBar SD\Backup-TB
  • Wait till the end of the scan.
  • Notepad will open containing the report log.
  • Post that log in your next reply.
  • A copy will also be saved in (%SystemDrive%\TB.txt). In this case C:\TB.txt

Did choose option 2 like mention, but then the program took over and started fix what it found. Hopefully that was intended, not sure from your post. Here is the log from the scan though.

Jent4253,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable SpySweeper
  • Open SpySweeper, click Shield Settings on the right (or Shields on the left, depending what screen you're on).
  • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
  • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
  • Click Hosts File and uncheck all items.
  • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Close SpySweeper.
  • Reboot your computer, and verify Spy Sweeper is disabled.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • In Programs, Right click Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and choose "Run as administrator".
  • Click on the Updates tab, and click the button Check for Updates If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware by right clicking and "Run as administrator" again.
  • Once the program has started, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked if it found any malware items, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.

I actually have installed both of the programs. Spysweeper I returned to the store as it was not what I believed it to be and the other stopped working and was giving me a run time error. Figured I could re-install it at a later date if needed.
I have been able to get windows updater to work a little, it still will not download the security updates that I need. It would only download the items for office and e-mail, but not for vista itself.

I uninstalled them after your last post when I had trouble following the instructions due to the run time error. I did reinstall the Malwarebytes now and it will not allow it to update and can't go to the website. It is acting like the same problem I am having trying to get to windows updater. I have reformated my hard drive to hopefully fix the problem and scanned it several times with many programs and have found nothing. Yet, it will not let me update this type of software or windows. Windows network diagnostics that I ran since it wouldn't download direct from microsoft says "download.microsoft.com" is not set up to establish connection on "World Wide Web service (HTTP)" with this computer.

Jent4253,
Exactly what did you do to Reformat the hard Drive?

Try this:
--------------------------------------------------------
Download Blacklight from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/security_center/
Under "Downloads", click on Blacklight and Save it to your Desktop
or
Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save it to your desktop from there.

Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert

Accept the license agreement.
Click > scan, wait for it to fimish, then click Close

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

Jent,
Your machine should be Ok.
Just make sure that whatever Antivirus you use is updated.
Also make sure that Windows Automatic Updates is ON. Check Control panel, Security Center.
