Thanks Noviciate for getting me back out of the archive.
Hi JMW3
Sorry to bring this back to life after it all seemed ok yesterday.
The machine is still working well but a routine Mcafee scan last night identified some trojans and disposed of them. The file names were the same as the ones you removed earlier hence my concern.
These were the beasts in question.
Generic FakeAlert.k(Trojan)
Generic FakeAlert.k(Trojan)
Generic.d!a(Trojan)
Generic FakeAlert.k(Trojan)
Generic.d!a(Trojan)

Do I need to worry or take any action.

Bill

Hello old bill

No problem at all. Let's have a look.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner)
Download TFC (Temp File Cleaner) by Old Timer Here & save it to your desktop.
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC Cleaner will close all open application windows
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program, your desktop will temporarily disappear
  • If prompted, click Yes to reboot
Note: Save your work.. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take any longer than a couple of minutes & may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here & save to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe & follow the prompts to install the program
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy & paste the log back into your next reply
    Note:
  • The log is automatically saved by Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware & can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either & let Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
If you receive an (Error Loading) error on reboot please reboot a second time . It is normal for this error to occur once & does not need to be reported unless it returns on future reboots.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

If you haven't already done so, open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, click Quarantine then Delete All. Close the program.

The item that Kaspersky flagged: C:\Backup\i5 070823.bkf. Looks like an old backup of some sort. Know what it is? If it is an old backup it would probably be no good today. I'm assuming the numbers correspond to a date. Probably worthwhile getting rid of it.

We'll run a couple more scans to be sure your clean.
Random's System Information Tool (RSIT)
  • Download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run the tool
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open, log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Copy & paste the contents of both logs in your next reply
If info.txt does not minimise to the Task Bar, you will find it in C:\rsit

Gmer
Download gmer.zip from Gmer here & save it to your desktop.
  • Right click on gmer.zip, select Extract All... & extract the contents to your desktop
  • Double click the Gmer.exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

To post in next reply:
Both RSIT logs

Hi jmw3

You are correct they are backup logs but incremental. I will delete all of them after I copy them to a CD.

Hello old bill

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version: Adobe Reader 9.1
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed Uncheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

The logs you provided are clean. McAfee still given warnings?

Hi jmw3

Thanks. Mcafee agrees no further infections. I guess that means I am squeaky clean. Many many thanks.
Do I delete all programs as per the prvious time? Once that is done I will follow your previous recomendation for further strengthening my protection.

Kind regards
Bill

Hello old bill
Good to hear. Here's the link & instructions for OTC again. This will remove RSIT, Gmer & TFC. I would recommend you hang on to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, keep it updated & use it regularly. If OTC doesn't remove anything I said it would then go ahead & delete them yourself:
OTC
Download OTC by Old Timer here & save it to your desktop.
Double click on OTC.exe. Click on CleanUp!.
You will receive a prompt that it needs to restart the computer to remove the files. Click Yes.
It will restart your computer automatically. If it doesn't, please restart your computer manually.
If you removed HijackThis previously, RSIT would have downloaded it again. If that's the case go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
  • Double click HijackThis.exe
  • From the Main menu click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Using the scroll bar, scroll down to Uninstall HijackThis
  • Click Uninstall HijackThis & exit then click Yes at the prompt
Glad I could be of some assistance to you... Good Luck & Safe Surfing
