My problem is I'm getting an annoying targeted popup (The content tends to follow whatever I'm surfing ATM.).

I've tried most everything I could think of, and most of them happened to be what you suggested as 'do this first before posting'.

I've tried Spybot, AdAware, a2, and a couple of other free programs (I should mention here that Spybot found a persistant Virtumonde, and eventually after researching and downloading various 'fixes' it didn't find it anymore.).

I've done Housecall and Panda free virus scans. My virus scanner is up to date, and never found anything anyway. I'm patched and updated. Arghh!

One of the first things that ran around and slapped me on the back of the head as I was reviewing my log file was the need to have Hijack remove the entry:

You will need to make a copy of these instructions because you'll have to disconnect from the internet to complete the fix. Either print them out or 'Copy and Paste' them into a Notepad.

First, please download the following programs as preparation, before we disconnect from the internet.

1. Ewido Anti-Malware Do not Use it Yet.

Here is a guide if you would like to read :

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

2. VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
In the 'VundoFix Setup' window, click on Install and then Close - This will create a folder called VundoFix on your Desktop. Do not Use it Yet.
IMPORTANT
If you already have a copy of VundoFix on your PC, please delete it and download a new copy. This file may have been updated since you downloaded your copy.

3. Ccleaner. Do not Use it Yet

Start> My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable

IMPORTANT
Some real-time protection programs may warn you of a possibly malicious script being detected when you run VundoFix. Please allow it to run - it is necessary to complete the fix. Alternatively, disable any script blocking software you have running before you start. ( e.g. Microsoft antispyware , Spybot teatimer, any other realtime scanners you may have, etc)

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Still in Safe Mode, run Ccleaner

Click on Options, Select Advanced Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. (Do not use the "Issues" block) Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything EXCEPT cookies, the Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.

Still in Safe Mode, run Ewido
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Settings, and under "What to scan?", select "Every file" then click ok. Click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Reconnect to the internet

Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 5 .

To check your version to see if it is the latest version, Please go to this link to verify your version to get the updates needed:

Once you have installed the latest update, please go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove all older instances of Java listed there.

Wow this has taken a long time. I've got up to the online scanners. Panda found a few cookies and Virtumonde, but did not disinfect. Kaspersky is in the process of loading. I'm going to wait for it to actually start scanning then I'm going to bed. I'll post the logs tomorrow morning.

Please read carefully and print the instructions for use when you are disconnected from the internet and when you are in Safe Mode.

It looks like you either didn't turn off the TrendMicro realtime scanners or didn't give the permission. Those scanners interfere with the fix. So, please first disconnect from the internet and the modem and then turnoff your TrendMicro Realtime scanners . I don't have TrendMicro, therefore I don't know how to turn them off. Please find out and turn them off temporarily until after the HijackThis fix. Or, alternatively, give the permission when requested.

I see that you've installed Ewido guard as well.You'll need to turnoff Ewido guard too.
1. Open Ewido by double-clicking the yellow 'E' icon in the system tray.
2. In the 'Your security status' section, toggle the Ewido Guard realtime protection 'off' by clicking 'active' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
3. When you reboot, Ewido will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the guard?".
4. Reply 'no' and set it to 'inactive' for the duration of your cleanup.

Good news: Your log is clean. Only some minor clean up and tidy up and then you are all set to go.

I seem to have missed this orphaned entry in the HijackThis. Please run HijackThis again and put a checkmark against it. Close all other windows except HIjackThis and click "fix checked" box.

Please delete the folder named "Vundo Fix" which is inside another folder named "fix pc" on your desktop. Next, open Spybot Search & Destroy. Click on "Recovery" on the left pane. Highlight BackWeblite.zip and click on "Purge selected items". Exit Spybot.

Now that you are clean, or seem to be, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure.

I am sure you've already turned on all your realtime scanners, but just make sure that you did.

Remember to hide your system files again.

Start>My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View
Under the Hidden files and Folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
check the Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK.

Disable and Enable System Restore If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. Because Windows regularly sets restorepoints, it's very possible that the malware, you have removed, is still present in the System Restore. If you put Windows back to such a restorepoint, this malware will be put back, as well.

This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.

4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

Reboot normally.

And that's all. But to help protect you against further infections, and also to help prevent criminals using your computer to infect other people's computers on the web, I recommend the following: (You may already have some of the items)

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.
If you haven't got a antivirus, you can download and install one of the following free ones: Make sure that you have only ONE antivirus running on your computer as more than one would cause conflict and render the computer vulnerable.

It is essential to keep the anti-virus program fully updated. New virus infections are being produced all the time, and unless the program downloads the latest 'definitions', it cannot protect you against the newer versions. If you want to check for updates manually I'd recommended doing so at least once a week. However, a better option is to set the program to download and install updates automatically every time you are connected to the Internet. The first time you use it, please set it to perform a full system scan.
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site <http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/maincatalog.aspx?lc=en-us> and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Keep your pestware-scanners up-to-date and do regular scans with them.

To keep your computer free of Spyware, Adware, Hijackers etc., download and install the following free pestware-scanners (if you haven't installed them allready):
