Vista processor running over 55% can't find problem

Unread postby gwemrick » May 19th, 2009, 5:04 pm

I am working on a HP Pavilion a1700n system running Vista Home Premium. I have been told that nothing has been added to the system recently. A few days ago it started to run really sloooooooow. it can take over an hour to load some programs., so trouble shooting has been very hard. It runs fine in safe mode but not normal mode. Under safe mode the processor is running about 2-3% like it should but in normal it is not under 55%.

I have ran CLEANUP4.5, CCLEAN, MALWAREBYTES, and NORTON AV nothing has been found.

On one reboot the system stated it need to run SP1 but had trouble, so I used another systen downloaded SP1 from MS and copied it to the Vista system. It took 4 hours and gave the error message 0x800F081F and could not finish the upgrade.

I tried to run HJT in normal mode but got an error message that it could not access the HOST file without being an administrator. I tried to run HJT as administrator by right clicking the shortcut but got the error message that HJT is already running.

I rebooted into safe mode and reran HJT and included the logs in this post.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Vista processor running over 55% can't find problem

Unread postby askey127 » May 22nd, 2009, 7:22 pm

Hi gwemrick,
Remove Programs Using Control Panel(Vista)
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Logitech Desktop Messenger

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here . Choose the Slim version.
  • Right click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe and choose Run as Administrator to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner by right clicking and choosing "Run as administrator", if it's not already running.
Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky.
(As a general rule, don't ever use a registry cleaner or "registry optimizer" of any kind on your machine).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer and System so that all items are checked. In The Windows Explorer section, you may wish to leave "Windows Log Files", "Start Menu Shortcuts", and "Desktop Shortcuts" unchecked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Please paste the contents of the install.txt file in your reply.

gwemrick,
----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Program(s) with CCleaner
Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools. Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
Click and Highlight the Following Programs, one at a time, and click the Run Uninstaller button for each one.
Wait for completion of each one before highlighting and Uninstalling the next.

Hardware Diagnostic Tools PC-Doctor, Inc.
HP Customer Experience Enhancements Hewlett-Packard
My HP Games WildTangent
Safari Apple Inc.
Yahoo! IE Search Suggest
Yahoo! Search Protection

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE= ... pf=desktop
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Search Protection] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Search Protection\SearchProtection.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
--------------------------------------------------------
Download the Newest Version of Adobe Reader
  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

If you prefer a simple reader, without plug-ins, that is smaller and faster, take a look at the free Foxit Reader here : http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/
I would recommend the older Foxit version 2.3 only, without the toolbar. Foxit version 3.0 has the undesirable ASK toolbar, and it's uncertain whether you can avoid it during installation.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Tell me how it's running.

Did you do something with the HOSTS file?
How is it running?

I removed the items requested

I got the error message about the host file again. It states:

"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed
A Problem caused the application to stop working correctly, Windows will notify
you if a solution is available."

I have made no cahnges to the Host file.

Windows did have a popup stating a problem with READYBOOST

Here is the HJT log after the fixes

Re: Vista processor running over 55% can't find problem

Unread postby askey127 » May 26th, 2009, 9:36 am

gwemrick,
That message actually denotes a problem with a Windows Service. It is not related to the HOSTS file.
-------------------------------------------------
Disable ReadyBoost
Plug in your flash drive, click the Start circle, and click Computer.
Right click the flash drive letter and choose Properties.
Click on the ReadyBoost tab and check the radiobutton labeled "Do not use this device".
See here : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/readyboost.aspx
Click Apply and OK.

Then reboot and tell me whether the READYBOOST messages and/or the host service messages go away.

From your log, this service:
O23 - Service: SessionLauncher - Unknown owner - C:\Users\jodi\AppData\Local\Temp\DX9\SessionLauncher.exe (file missing)
is actually related to Roxio and I believe is supposed to be removed after installation. It's possible it could be causing the message.
We could forcible remove that service, but if the above READYBOOST change fails to work, I would prefer to ask you to Uninstall and Re-Install Roxio.

Let me know how it goes.

I made the corrections but still get the ReadyBoot and Host errors

The processor seems to be working normally under 3% but to open HJT or the control panel still takes 10 - 15 minutes.

The system never did complete loading SP1. Could theis be part of the problem?

I have tried to look up system restore points but I get a message that system retore is already running and exits.

The system was running automatic updates, but would crash every time because it can not create restore points. I turned off the automatic updates.

Here is the last HJT log

Re: Vista processor running over 55% can't find problem

Unread postby askey127 » May 27th, 2009, 7:08 am

gwemrick,
Not being able to obtain updates is very serious.
A corrupted Service Pack can cause any number of problems.
I would consider contacting Microsoft or a system forum about whether a Repair Install, or SP1 Uninstall, or other action is best.
I would advise getting some corrective action on this as soon as possible.
I don't see any malware that could be causing the problems you describe.
