Hello. I recently removed a malware infection from my computer...SpyAxe. Following is the latest HJT log.
Would someone be so kind to help me decipher these results. What do I still need to do to be clean?

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put a check mark in the boxes, only next to these following items : (if present)

O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Filter: text/plain - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Click Fix Checked

Other than those 2 entries, Your log is CLEAN !!

How is your system running ??
Are you still having problems??

Here are a few tools that I recommend for protecting your system and keeping your system clean !!

Real Time Prevention
SpywareBlaster© by Javacool Software
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.
IESpyad© by EHowes : This will add several hundred Restricted Sites to the Restricted site zone in IE.

CCleaner© by CCleaner.com is a good app to clean out temp files, cookies, recent folder(win2000) and Prefetch folder(XP), etc

Spyware Scanners:
Ad-aware SE© by Lavasoft Scans your system for spyware and other threats
a² Scanner© by Emsi Software : Scans for Malware and Trojans on your system.

Good Free Antivirus Programs:
AVG© by Grisoft
Avast© by ALWIL Software
NOTE:Remember always have just 1 antivirus program running at a time. Having more than one running causes a conflict between the programs !! You can use one as a backup to run manually

Windows Update:
It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks
Windows Update

Firewalls:
If you have an "always on " internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, I recommend a Firewall.
A firewall will make your pc invisible to the outside world and will filter the outgoing and incoming traffic on your pc.
For a good idea of how vulnerable your system(s) are go to GRC
Scroll down to "Shields Up" Click on "Proceed" Then click on "Common Ports"to scan your ports.
Very good Firewalls :
ZoneAlarm Firewall© by Zone Labs
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall© by Sunbelt

These next steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection
Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness.
Alternative Browsers:
FireFox© by Mozilla
Opera© by Opera Software ASA

Java Plug-in© Sun Microsystems. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the HijackThis folder if everything is working okay.

Always keep your Antivirus & Spyware Removal Tools current with the latest definitions and updates !!

Using these tools and keeping them updated will reduce the risk of future infections!!

Do you have any questions??

Incidently, computer is running normally...there is however still a bad? link via Start and then All Programs called "Online Security Guide" which takes you to the website for SpyAxe, Spysheriff, etc. Is this legitimate?

I already have most of the software you suggested and will look at the other recommendations as well.

Many thanks again for your help. Where may I make a donation?

My wife's computers is next

Unread postby Matthew » December 30th, 2005, 7:29 pm

Hi. I will need to tackle my wifes computer tomorrow as it apparently has the same problems.
One thing on her computer though that did not happen with mine: When on-line, something (a worm?) is causing the computer to generate hundreds of email messages via symantecs proxy settings? This gets so bad that you cannot continue online because you cannot see anything as the screen is full of little message boxes saying the mail cannot be delivered. I finally removed symantec antivirus ( am using corporate version 9.0) and that seems to have stopped it for now but will need a fix soon...any ideas?

Thanks again!

Your very welcome !!

Go to Start, ControlPanel, Add/Remove Uninstall the following entries : (if present)

Online Security Guide

Also right click and delete it from the All Programs menu.

As far as your wife's PC, I would install an Antivirus if it is connected to the Internet.
Try and run a HijackThis log and post it starting a new topic !! Not in this one !!

Re-opened on request.

======================

Dear site administrator:

Not sure if I need to reopen this topic or not....after cleaning my computer I note that the power mgmt features of my computer no longer function, i.e. standby and hibernation. I have tried to resolve this by reinstalling the drivers and troubleshooting via MS support/knowledge base to no avail. I have since downloaded a host of new antispyware programs to my computer, perhaps there is a known conflict for one or several of these?

Your assitance is appreciated.

Hello Linkmaster,

I didn't notice it until several days after the fix because I rarely use the standby or hiberbation features, so it is difficult to say if it may be related. Just to describe what actually happens when I try to put the computer into either standby or hibernate states: the usual screen appears that says 'preparing to standby or hibernate', but never actually does...i.e. computer just hangs on these screens and I have to manually reboot. It does not make a difference if I try to enter standby manually versus just lowering the screen (laptop).

Your log looks clean !!

It sounds like its one of the Apps that you recently installed that doesn't want the system to go into Hibernate or Standby.

Spyware Guard
WinPatrol
Spybot tea Timer

Try stopping , one at a time, the new apps and try it after each one. Maybe that will find the culprit !!

I tried stopping each of these individually and then stopped them all with no success....still hangs on standby or hibernation. I also tried stopping skype as MS knowledge base suggested, but still no good.

Not sure where to go from here?

Go to Start, Control Panel, Power Options

Check ALL of the options you have set. See if something is off kilter !!

Try stopping Norton as well !!

Let me know what you find !!

OK, checked my power mgmt settings and everything appears OK. I even reset them just to see if that would help but no change.

Disabling Norton also does not solve the problem. It is not a driver issue as I have the latest driver installed. It must be one or more of the software programs I recently installed...perhaps I should uninstall or disable each one until I discover which one is interferring? Do you agree or have another course of action?
