I've posted the about buster and ewido logs -- panda and hoster didn't generate any logs.

Please review and let me know if you see any problems. I haven't been having any issues, other than an outside website trying to contact my computer, which my firmware is blocking.

Thanks again for all your help.

After leaving the computer on overnight, I've now got CFD.EXE trying to access the internet, and Internet Explorer is being very sluggish -- keeps trying google for a long time, then coming back with error message.

Thanks again for all the help!

Here's the exact error message. What's weird is it's just some sites (msn.com, google, etc.) This site is working fine.
I'll check the link you sent.

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Hi Andya729,

Try the following and then reboot a couple of times and see what happens.

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

==============================================

Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you may see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

===============================================
Go to Tools>Internet Options>General Tab. Under Temporary Internet Files, click on "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files", make sure the the box for "Delete all offline content" is checked. Click "OK" and then click "OK" again.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Everything seems to be good. I can't thank you enough.

One question -- when I go to the Customize Desktop display, my home page URL is listed as About Home, which is not what my homepage shows up as when I look in Tools> Internet Options> General. Is that normal?

Thanks again!!!! You are a huge help!

Hi Andya729,

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let's make sure everything is OK. While you are at it, run the Panda online scan too, and post the result along with the new HijackThis log.

You were right to have me check once more. Something weird is going on with Google and AOL Search (which I'm trying to uninstall since I don't want it anyway). When I'm clicking on links it's sending me to AOL Search websites.

I'm trying to run Panda now (it was giving me real trouble for a while but seems to be running smoothly now after I rebooted). Although overall the computer seems to be running slowly.

Anyway, here is the HJT log and I'll post how Panda went once it's completed.

Thanks again!

Hi Andya729, :D

You mentioned earlier about the notifications you get from your firewall. It's normal to have your firewall block the traffic and notify you of that. In fact, it's good. You know that it's working. You can get all the information you need to make the adjustments to your preferences from the "help" function of your firewall. Now, just a little tidying up to do and you are all set to go. You say that you want to uninstall AOL. If you are not using it, I couln't agree with you more.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and uninstall AOL and PURENETWORKS, if present.

Then, run HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOLDialer] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLDial.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Pure Networks Port Magic] "C:\PROGRA~1\PURENE~1\PORTMA~1\PortAOL.exe" -Run
O23 - Service: AOL TopSpeed Monitor (AOL TopSpeedMonitor) - America Online, Inc - C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\TopSpeed\2.0\aoltsmon.exe

Make sure that you close all other windows, except HijackThis
. Click on "Fix checked"

Using Windows Explorer, navigate and delete the following folders in bold:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL
C:\PROGRAM FILES\PURE NETWORKS\PORTMAGIC\PortAOL.exe" -Run

Do a cleaning of prefetch and temp files

Navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

• Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
• Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
• On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
• In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
• On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
• Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
• Click OK.

Reboot. Let me know how things are before I give you a clean bill of health

Thank you again for sticking with me on this. If I could find the people who create these viruses, I'd have a few words for them...

Anyway, there are still some random things going on, most notably something seems to keep changing my web settings (home page, etc.), as well as it seems something changed the settings on my Zone Alarm firewall to "Disable Internet Firewall". Also, msxd.exe (which I thought we deleted earlier) has shown up in the list in Zone Alarm as able to access the internet.

Also, when I went to delete the temp files, it wouldn't let me delete 3 files, even though I had no applications open (~DF8239.tmp, ~DF6784.tmp, and ZLT050a5.tmp). Is this a problem?

I also re-ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, Ewido, and SpywareBlaster, and found and fixed a few issues, though I still seem to be having problems.

Anyway, here's the HJT logfile:

Hi Andya729, :)

Anyway, there are still some random things going on, most notably something seems to keep changing my web settings (home page, etc.)

Looking at your log, I cannot see a home page set. On Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options>General tab. In "Home Page" box type in the URL that you would like to have as your home page. For example: http://www.yahoo.com . Then click on "Apply" and "OK". Watch it for a few day and if it still keeps changing, let me know.

as it seems something changed the settings on my Zone Alarm firewall to "Disable Internet Firewall". Also, msxd.exe (which I thought we deleted earlier) has shown up in the list in Zone Alarm as able to access the internet.

If you are talking about the Windows' firewall by "Disable Internet Firewall" that's normal. It's not a good practice to have two active firewalls at the same time. Therefore, ZoneAlarm automatically disables the Windows firewall which only protects against incoming threats anyway. Now, for the msxd.exe, it's not showing in the HijackThis log. Can you tell me which list in Zone Alarm it shows as being able to access the internet. Can you give me more detail on that please, like the name of the program that it's using, properties, etc.?

Also, when I went to delete the temp files, it wouldn't let me delete 3 files, even though I had no applications open (~DF8239.tmp, ~DF6784.tmp, and ZLT050a5.tmp). Is this a problem?

Those are the temporary backup files that ZoneAlarm creates, and you cannot delete them. I have them too.

I also re-ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, Ewido, and SpywareBlaster, and found and fixed a few issues, though I still seem to be having problems.

It's a very good practice to run these tools on a regular basis. Please make sure that you update them before you run them. Also, remember to use the "immunize" function of Spybot after every update to complete the update of the definitions.

Just to be on the safe side, I would like you to do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Post the result of the Kaspersky online scan and a new HijackThis log, please.

This stuff's never as easy as it should be...

The Kaspersky scan came back with several infection, log attached at the end of the post. I also had not immunized after running Spybot, so I did that this time.

The Zone Alarm firewall I was referring to as being disabled was the Windows firewall, so I guess we're okay there (I set it back to disabled).

msxd.exe was actually in ZoneAlarm under Program Control>Programs and was listed as being an allowed program, so I've disabled it so it has X's all the way across, I'm just worried as to how it got there after we deleted it.

Thanks again for all the help.
