Help! Buffer overflow and Problem with shortcuts

Unread postby kristenrachel18 » May 6th, 2009, 12:12 pm

I have no idea on what is happening to my pc.
I have a dell inspiron 1100 laptop and during the last ten days I had always an alert, just few minutes after the start up, saying that the "C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe" had generated a buffer overflow immediately blocked by McAfee SecurityCenter. Yesterday a system crash (blue screen) appeared. But after restarting everythings run properly but, once again, the message related to buffer overflow is showing up again. Any check with McAfee was unfruitful. Also with some programs when trying to open a yellow triangle window opens say problem with shortcut. (the drive or network connection that the shortcut " .Ink" refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again.
Could you please tell me if there is something wrong with my laptop. Any suggestion is welcome.
Thank you very much in advance for your suggestions.

Hi kristenrachel18

Unfortunately I don't have good news for you.

You have virut which is a file infector and is able to infect all .exe, .scr, .htm and .html files.

Though in theory it can be disinfected it is not like that in practice as virus is buggy and not all disinfected files will work.

Only sensible solution is reformatting. You can backup files which are not
.exe, .scr, .htm and .html. I recommend to backup them to CD/DVD and not to removable drives as infection can spread through those.

If you need help with reformartting, let me know.

As for backupping, you can simply burn all documents/pictures etc, you need to blank CD/DVD.

As for reformatting, this should help.

Where can I get another Windows Software CD, so that I can do the reformmatting and reboot? And how much are they? And is there anywhere I could get a replacement CD for free or cheap?

So then you should have recovery partition in hard drive which you could use to restore factory defaults.

Which brand is your computer?

Due to lack of response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
