Re: Browser keeps shutting down

I downloaded and deleted firefox because it kept shutting down and messing up worse than IE. So, I updated my browser to IE version 8. It generally has been better, but still shuts down. I managed to download and run the kapersky online scan and a new hijack this log. Below are the results.

I'm sorry for the delay.

Download and run Combofix
We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Re: Browser keeps shutting down

Hi efx137

I'm afraid I have some very bad news for you :(

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

This is not the only problem here - a very important system file seems to be infected too. It seems there is no clean copy present on your computer and the file has most likely infected other files too.

I'm very sorry to tell you, but the only way here is to reformat the computer. Even IF we manage to remove all bad files on this system, you will likely still have problems and your computer will be at a high security risk.

For more information, please read:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help with backupping/reformatting :)

Thanks for the news - however disappointing it is.

Can we try to reformat and clean up as much as we can? I will be careful as to passwords, etc and other sensitive information. I have not experienced any fraud as of yet and have my credit accounts, etc. all monitored. Nothing unusual has happened so far.

Is someone currently accessing this information - is there anyway to stop that from happening?

If you reformat your computer, it will be clean. You don't need to do any extra cleaning steps after that :)

Is someone currently accessing this information - is there anyway to stop that from happening?

I'm not saying someone is accessing your information, but someone is able to and if he wants to get all the information he want, he will be able to do so. The only way to stop that happening is by reformatting the system :(

Don't take the risk - it's not worth it. Get to a clean computer and change all your passwords :)
Did you do any online banking on this system? If so, please be VERY careful!

Let me know if you have more questions. I can also give you some tips to prevent this situation in the future :)

What can I do to avoid this in the future?

Thanks for all your help!

Hey efx137

Here is a good tutorial for reformatting Windows XP:
http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/i ... format.htm

Please remember that you will lose ALL your files on your hard drive. If you got any important documents or other data on it, make a backup of it first!
To reformat your system, you will need your XP and driver disk. If you cannot locate these or you are unsure about the reformatting process, you should go to the manufacturer's website to get all relevant information related to formatting and reinstalling the operating system on your particular computer model.

Some Tips
Note: All these steps should be done after the system is reformatted.

FIREWALL
In your current log, I can't see any signs of a firewall, so I assume you use Windows Firewall.
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.

FREE FIREWALLS
  • Comodo
When installing, it will ask you to install Anti-Virus functionality. Please uncheck "install comodo antivirus (recommended)" unless you've uninstalled your AV. NEVER have 2 or more Anti-Virus programs on your computer; it will cause performance loss and/or other problems.
  • Online Armor
  • Sunbelt Kerio

Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Make sure you enable Automatic Updates for your computer. You can set this in the control panel -> windows update.
An alternative way is to visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer:
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note: I see you are running SP2. It's recommended to update to SP3 if you have the time and resources for it. A service pack contains lot of security fixes and general updates.

P2P Software
Peer to Peer (or P2P) software are the #1 source of malware infections. Even if the program itself is safe, the downloads you get with them can (and will) be infected. If you've used such software in the past, I recommend you to not use them anymore. If you're going to use them (again), please be very careful with your downloads.
Please read more about this here.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download it from here. Click "Download" and you'll get redirected to download.com, where you can download the product. You can also buy this program, which gives you real-time protection against common malware. However, you can use the free program to scan and remove any infections found.

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Is your pc running slow?

Ok, I will start saving some files. However, what happens to my Itunes? How will I get/access my music again?

Hey efx137

I have no experience with Itunes, but I've found this article which may be interesting. It explains how to backup your Itunes files (music, applications,..) :)

Hey,

Thanks for everything. I think this should do it. I haven't reformatted yet as I'm still trying to find my original software CD. And, I still need to save my stuff on a disk. It's going to take a few more days...
