Ah actually, AVG didn't work properly, it's not fully uninstalling - giving me

'Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key... Error 0x80070005' -

I had a look in the registry to check I had permissions to modify that key - in the registry it won't let me even view the permissions for the key, let alone change them. Eek. Is there still a malware infection?

Ok, sorry about this - quick update! I ran the AVG removal tool, then went into the registry and changed the ownershup for the registry key it was complaining about - then changed the access setting to allow access... then AVG installed without problem.

Hey Stu_LTT

Thank you for the donation :)

Most likely, there is still one malware file on your system which we'll need to find first.

FileFind
Download FileFind by Atribune and unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on FileFind.exe to open the programme.
  • Enter vvtcu.hnl into the File: box.
  • Click on the Search button.
  • After a while a list of file locations will appear in the List of Files: box.
  • Click on the Export button.

This will create a Notepad file named Export.txt located in the C:\ folder, copy and paste it to your next post please.

In your next reply, please post:
1) The results of FileFind
2) A new HijackThis log

1)

FileFind returned no results, so the export.txt file was empty

2)

Hey Stu_LTT

In that case, it looks like the file isn't present anymore on your system :)

These lines are in your HijackThis log:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Did you set these yourself? If not, please fix them with HijackThis:
Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.

You seem to use an outdated, paid version of Adobe Acrobat:
O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll

These outdated versions contains security issues. Because of this, I recommend you to update or also install the newest Adobe reader.
You can download it from http://get.adobe.com/reader/

CLEAN UP
Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

FIREWALL
I can't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use windows firewall.
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.

FREE FIREWALLS
  • Comodo
When installing, it will ask you to install Anti-Virus functionality. Please uncheck "install comodo antivirus (recommended)" unless you've uninstalled your AV. NEVER have 2 or more Anti-Virus programs on your computer; it will cause performance loss and/or other problems.
  • Online Armor
  • Sunbelt Kerio

Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here

Congratulations, your machine appears to be clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Make sure you enable Automatic Updates for your computer. You can set this in the control panel -> windows update.
An alternative way is to visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer:
http://www.update.microsoft.com

P2P Software
Peer to Peer (or P2P) software are the #1 source of malware infections. Even if the program itself is safe, the downloads you get with them can (and will) be infected. If you've used such software in the past, I recommend you to not use them anymore. If you're going to use them (again), please be very careful with your downloads.
Please read more about this here.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download it from here. Click "Download" and you'll get redirected to download.com, where you can download the product. You can also buy this program, which gives you real-time protection against common malware. However, you can use the free program to scan and remove any infections found.

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Is your pc running slow?
Read What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware. We would very appreciate it if you register on that forum and make your complaint.

Happy safe surfing!

Please reply once more to this thread so we know it can be closed. If you have any questions left, it's now the time to ask! :)
