malware created a fake 3 1/2" A:\ on my machine

Unread postby malwareaway » May 2nd, 2009, 11:04 am

Hi, I hope I'm doing this correctly, I tried to familiarize myself with the process before using it. I'm doing this because some unknown malware created a fake 3 1/2" A:\ drive on my machine about 2 weeks ago (from May 2, 2009). There are files on it, I don't recognize what they are, they look like system files, or at least they did the last time I checked them, the malware may be cycling through files. I've received advice from friends that these files are probably copies of files on the C:\ drive, and that it's probably searching for data for the purpose of identity theft. The entire system is fooled by this fake drive, and the fake drive is recognized as being full. I use both AVG and MalwareBytes regularly, and I update them VERY often. Even they are fooled by this. Can someone please help me to fix this, or point me in the right direction? Below is the data that I'm supposed to post in this message. Please advise me if I did not do this correctly. Thanks-

As instructed, this is a new HijackThis logfile. The only change that has occurred since my original logfile that I can think of is that I upgraded to AVG 8.5 from 8.0.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi malwareaway and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

The only change that has occurred since my original logfile that I can think of is that I upgraded to AVG 8.5 from 8.0.
That is absolutely fine, do not make any other changes though unless I ask OK

HijackThis Advice:

At present you are using a older version, we will be updating this later OK.

Note: Do not uninstall the older version until I ask you to please, thank you.

Next:

Please download Rooter.exe to your desktop.

  • Double click on Rooter.exe to start the application.
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt.
  • Post the contents of Rooter.txt in your next reply.

Next:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
  • Rooter Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please.

Due to lack of activity this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
