Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does
not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus
on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this
service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot
and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results
presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure
this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a
fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are
aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives
might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so
please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service,
not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the
fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics.
Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or
may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when
scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file.
Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of
the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an
anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service,
not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus
vendors without exception. If you do not want your files to be
distributed, please do not send them at all.

Hello Matthew,

Download win32delfkil.exe.
Save it on your desktop.
Double click on win32delfkil.exe and install it. This creates a new folder on your desktop: win32delfkil.
Close all windows, open the win32delfkil folder and double click on fix.bat.
The computer will reboot automatically.
You have "browsela" present, so you'll need to reboot the computer manually, by turning the power off and then back on.

I will be asking you to post the contents of the logfile c:\windelf.txt later.
===============
Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out or copy it into a word program).

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
Tutorial if needed

Please download and unzip
AboutBuster to a folder.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Check the AboutBuster Tutorial for instructions.
Don't run it yet.

Download and unzip HSfix to your desktop. use link below:
DownloadItHere

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection and is not to be used on any other infection as it could damage a person's PC

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/ ... redder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Reboot into SafeMode. <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

1. Reboot into safe mode

Important Step
2. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
- Service: Network Security Service (NSS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for:
36.tmp.exe
37.tmp.exe
crhw32.exe

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.

4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Acrobat IE Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE083} - C:\WINDOWS\system\ctldlg32.dll
O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\adsldpbf.dll - {EEE7178C-BBC3-4153-9DDE-CD0E9AB1B5B6} - C:\WINDOWS\adsldpbf.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [36.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\36.tmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [37.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\37.tmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [36.tmp.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\36.tmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [37.tmp.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\37.tmp.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: browsela - C:\WINDOWS\system32\browsela.dll
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11F?? #•???`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\crhw32.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

5. Delete the following files if present:
C:\WINDOWS\system\ctldlg32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\adsldpbf.dll
C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\36.tmp.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\37.tmp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\browsela.dll
C:\WINDOWS\crhw32.exe[/B]
(and any other files with the same name that end in .dll, .exe or .dat, you may find them right next to each other, example - appsw.exe, appsw.dll, appsw.dat)

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

6. Double click on the HSfix and when asked to merge say yes.

7. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

8. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. It will ask to scan the system again, let it. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

9. Run Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

10. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

11. Reboot into normal mode and open up Internet Explorer

12. Download and run this online virus scan if you can:<---Important
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/houseca ... t_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

13. Reboot and post the contents of the logfile c:\windelf.txt and post a fresh HJT log back here by using the add reply button below, and lets see how we did. [/b]

Forgot to mention that I still do not have control over my desktop background settings...when I try to change it via control panel/display, it does not allow me to make the change...there is a curious IE icon there among the other usual selections.

Hello Matthew,

Your hijackthis log looks better. Let’s try the Panda Active Scan along with the Silent Runners. Sorry about the TrendMicro. I thought their problem was fixed. I think Panda may be the better choice anyway with the problem icon you mentioned.

STEP 1.
======
Panda Active Scan
Please go to Panda ActiveScan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report by using Add Reply.

STEP 2.
======
Silent Runners

Download Silentrunners.zip from here and unzip it a new folder on your desktop.
  • Run the SilentRunners.vbs file.
  • You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click NO
  • If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow SilentRunners.vbs to run.
  • This script is not malicious so please allow it.
  • A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file and copy & paste it in your next reply.

Hello Matthew,

Please do the following:

Show Hidden Files
Please show all files for your system.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Delete Files and Folders
Please delete the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vx.tll<==file
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Favorites\health<==file
If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Regscan
Please download RegScan.
Within RegScan.zip you will find the file regscan.vbs
You may have to allow this script to run or disable anti-spyware again in order for it to run.
A window will open titled RegFinder.vbs and you will see place to input search terms.
Please enter the search terms:
alexa
After the search has completed a window titled Results.txt will open.
Please copy the results and post(reply) back.

Cleanmgr
To clean temporary files:
  1. Go > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
  2. Scan your system for files to remove.
  3. Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  4. Click OK to remove those files.
  5. Click Yes to confirm deletion.

Hoster

Please download hoster.
  1. Unzip Hoster.zip
  2. Open Hoster.exe.
  3. Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"
  4. Close program when complete.
  5. Empty Recycle Bin

Please post(reply) another hijackthis log and another Panda scan and let me know how your computer is working. I am reviewing the Silent Runners log.

OK. I have followed your instructions however, could not find the file 'health', although there is a folder by the same name in that location...no such file name.

RegScan follows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; Regscan.vbs Version: 1.2 by rand1038

; 02-Jan-06 17:50:11
; Search Term(s) Used: "alexa"
; 2 matches were found.
; The search took 28 seconds.

Curiously, Panda scan finds the 'health' file but a search done as you suggested turns up no such file at that location.

Although this is my wife's computer and I don't usually use it, it seems to be functioning normally. No more banners appear at the top when running IE. It is not running slowly or with any other obvious outward signs of infection.

Hello Matthew,

I am glad things have improved with your wife’s computer. Please do the following and let’s see if we can clear up a few remaining problems

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. Make sure that you have one blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\sharedtaskscheduler]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\sharedtaskscheduler]

{8C7461EF-2B13-11d2-BE35-3078302C2030} REG_SZ Component Categories cache daemon

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{31EE3286-D785-4E3F-95FC-51D00FDABC01}]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]

"Wallpaper"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\System]
"Wallpaper"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\alexa toolbar]

Save it to your desktop as Fixme.reg. Save it as :
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fixme.reg

Locate Fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

Ok, let's make sure that you have your desktop back as a start and that you don't have a Active Desktop object.

Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see an checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Next, click on the tab themes, select Windows XP in the dropdrown box and click Apply. Click on the Desktop tab and select the wallpaper of your choice and click Apply then Ok.

Delete C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html<==file

Download WinPFind.zip to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

Extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.
Open the C:\WinPFind folder and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
Click on Configure Scan Options.
Remove all the checkmarks under Folder Options on the left side by clicking the button Remove All, uncheck Run Addon's and click Apply.
Click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish.

Please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log file named C:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt. Please copy that log into your next reply.

Well, for the first time in several days I now have control over the destop settings and no more IE icon!!...many thanks!

WinPFind scan follows....look forward to your reply.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hello Matthew,

Please do the following:

STEP 1.
======
Backup Your Registry

Please backup your Registry...
  • Press "CTRL – ALT – DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
  • In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
  • In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
  • Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
  • Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

STEP 2.
======
Registry Fix

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. Make sure that you have one blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text.

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser]
"{42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6}"=-
"{0B53EAC3-8D69-4B9E-9B19-A37C9A5676A7}"=-
"{42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6}"=-

Save it to your desktop as Fixme.reg. Save it as :
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fixme.reg

Overwrite the existing Fixme.reg. Locate Fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

Please do this again so that I can verify that the fixes occurred. Then after I review it and everything looks okay, I will give you the final clean-up instructions.

STEP 3.
======
WinPFind
Please Download the following tools to assist us in removing this infection! Download WinPFind

  1. Right Click the Zip Folder and Select Extract All
  2. Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  3. Don’t do anything with it yet!
Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

  1. Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  2. Click on Configure Scan Options.
  3. Remove all the checkmarks under Folder Options on the left side by clicking the button Remove All, uncheck Run Addon's and click Apply.
  4. Click Start Scan
It will scan the entire System, so please be patient! This scan may take awhile
Once the Scan is Complete

  1. Reboot your computer into normal mode.
  2. Go to the WinPFind folder
  3. Locate WinPFind.txt
  4. Copy the results from the WinPFind.txt file and post the results in your next reply.

Please post using add/reply another hijackthis log.
