DDE Server Window, IE, Outlook Errors, Google Redirection

Unread postby slrowe » April 23rd, 2009, 8:31 pm

These are my symptoms:

DDE Server Window Error message
Internet Explorer has encountered an error and must close message
Outlook has encountered an error and must close message
Redirection from Google generated links
Norton message that it blocked the Trojan.KillAV
E-mail is being monitored, since activation e-mail from this site was apparently blocked, and within 24 hours, outgoing e-mails will result in phishing e-mails sent to the addressee and my computer. I had to activate from my work computer.

This is my Operating System and internet software:

MS Windows XP Professional ver. 5.1.2600 SP2 Build 2600
Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13

Internet Explorer ver. 6 was updated to ver. 7 by a Norton technician who gave up and said that the Registry was refreshing.

Please help me.

I'm so very sorry you have waited for so long without receiving a reply.

If you still need help, then please do the following:

Submit a file for analysis
We need to have something checked for malware. Please go to Jotti's.
  • Click Browse next to File to upload & scan and copy and paste the first line of the following list into the browse box:
    Code: Select all
    C:\WINDOWS\CTHELPER.EXE
  • Click Submit. The file will now be scanned for malware and the results will be displayed from the screen. Select the part where the virus scan results are shown (the part starting with A-squared and ending with VBA32) and copy and paste this to notepad.
  • Repeat this procedure for any other files I have listed.
  • Copy and paste the whole notepad file you just made into your reply.

RSIT
Please download random/random's system information tool (RSIT) and run it. At the disclaimer screen, choose a period of one month. Then click Continue. It will produce two logs:

  • log.txt (will be maximized)
  • info.txt (will be minimized)

Please post both in your next reply. If they won't fit into one post, divide them over multiple posts :)

No problem :)

Open hijackthis, click do a system scan only, put a check next to these, click fix checked:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Uninstall these programs:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Download and install the latest version of Java from here. The site is a bit confusing; this is what you should do:
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Choose the correct Platform. Also, check the box that says I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Now, click Continue.
  • Click on the filename under Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop.
  • Now, close all other windows. Including Internet Explorer.
  • You can now install Java by double-clicking the executable you just downloaded.

GMER
Do not touch the computer while GMER is running! If you do, it'll go completely unresponsive and you'll have to shut it down using the power switch. Just don't touch the PC while GMER is working.
Please download gmer.zip by GMER and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click the file you just downloaded and choose Extract all
  • Click Next
  • Click Browse
  • Click the + next to My Computer
  • Click Local Disk (C:)
  • Click Make new folder
  • Enter GMER
  • Click OK, then Next
  • Check Show extracted files and click Finish
  • Double click on GMER.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the GMER scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close GMER.

Click Start>Run, enter C:\ and click OK.
Click File>New>Folder, and name the new folder that appears Program
Then delete the folder (I know it seems pointless but I need to check whether you can do that).
Let me know if any error occurred.

WildTangent

You have installed WildTangent. It's not technically malware, but some people consider it to bring malware along. WildTangent is a video game software company, specialized in online games. The WildTangent Web Driver allows you to play 3D games over the internet. It does gather and send a lot of information about your computer to the WildTangent servers. It's not technically spyware, but personally I would not want a program that:
  • gathers data about my operating system
  • gathers data about my CPU type and speed
  • tells its creators how much memory my PC has
  • gathers data about my video card type and driver version
  • gathers data about my sound card type and driver version
  • gathers data about my DirectX version
  • tells its creator from where it was installed
  • takes up MASSIVE amounts of memory and processor power, even while not actively in use
Your call. If you don't want WildTangent after all, you can uninstall WildTangent Web Driver through the Software applet in the Control Panel.

Export part of the registry
I need to see a part of your registry.
  • Click Start > Run
  • Copy and paste the following:
    Code: Select all
    REGEDIT /e "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Results.txt" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32"
  • Click OK.
  • Post the Results.txt that appears on your desktop here. It might take a small while to come up though - there is no progress bar so just be patient.

I found the source of your issues and it's fixable :D

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I need you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • Install the program by following the prompts after double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe
  • Once you approach the final installation screen, put a check next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish
  • MBAM (that's an acronym of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) will now start. Choose Perform full scan and click Scan
  • Get a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and watch some TV for about an hour.
  • Once the scan has finished, click OK, then Show Results.
  • Put a check next to everything, then click Remove selected.
  • Now, a log will open. Save this to your desktop and post it.

Strange..... let's do it manually.

Backup the registry
  1. Download ERUNT to your desktop from HERE
  2. Double-click on the file to install the program
  3. Uncheck the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  4. Click No when you get the option to run ERUNT at Windows startup.
  5. During the installation, check Launch ERUNT
  6. Accept the defaults for running a backup
  7. ERUNT will then back up your registry

OTMoveIt3
  • Download OTMoveIt3 and save it to your desktop. Then double click the program to it.
  • Copy and paste the lines in the code box below into the input field at the bottom left corner:
    Code: Select all
    :Processes
    explorer.exe
    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
    "aux"="wdmaud.drv"
    :Files
    C:\windows\vwjaar.kck
    :Commands
    [Emptytemp]
    [reboot]

  • Now click the red button that says MoveIt! Your computer will reboot shortly after
  • After rebooting, to the right, the results show up. Copy and paste them all into a notepad file and post the notepad file in your next reply.

Now use your computer for a while and tell me how it's doing.

Can you summarize what we did, and why Anti-Malware did not find anything to remove, but OTMoveIt3
accomplished something? Does the log file explain the symptoms which I reported in my first post? Do
we need to do anything else?

I am now receiving Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications windows on startup.

You had something called Daonol. It is a virus which drops a random file in C:\windows (in your case vwjaar.kck), and then hijacks the settings of one of the sound drivers to load that file into memory whenever the sound system is initialized, instead of the benign wdmaud.drv.

Usually Malwarebytes' can detect and remove Daonol, for some reason now it didn't, so I took the manual approach and told OTMoveIt to remove it. The settings have now been restored, the sound drivers have been 'unhijacked', but.... for some reason OTMoveIt didn't find the Daonol file.

The file path in your registry said this:
C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\..\\vwjaar.kck

.. means 'one folder up', so this should mean:

C:\WINDOWS\vwjaar.kck

.....but for some reason OTMoveIt didn't find the file.

So next I would like to check whether I misinterpreted the file path or whether the file is just not there.
We do that with an incredibly lengthy online scan from a reputable antivirus company, and I know they include Daonol in their definitions. Instructions are below:

Kaspersky Online Scan
I would like you to run an online antivirus scan. Please click here to be taken to the Kaspersky site.

  • The site will present you with a list of important items. Read those. If you're unsure about something, stop and ask! If you're sure everything is all right, close all other windows.
  • Now, click Accept.
  • It will start a download rougly 10 MB in size. If prompted by your firewall to allow internet access, allow.
  • Once the download has finished, click Next.
  • Under Please select a target to scan, choose My Computer
  • Get a cup of coffee and watch some TV. Do not run any other programs while Kaspersky is scanning! If you're on dial-up, you can now terminate the internet connection if you wish.
  • Once finished, you will be presented with the results. Click Save as text and save the log to your desktop.

Post the results in your next reply.

Also, to be absolutely sure something did not restore the virus, let's recheck those sound settings:

Export part of the registry
I need to see a part of your registry.
  • Click Start > Run
  • Copy and paste the following:
    Code: Select all
    REGEDIT /e "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Results.txt" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32"
  • Click OK.
  • Post the Results.txt that appears on your desktop here. It might take a small while to come up though - there is no progress bar so just be patient.

I am now receiving Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications windows on startup.

Is it saying Windows isn't legitimate?  :o

Based on a Google search, and assuming that the window message is legitimate, the
implication is that something we did recently made my OS now look counterfeit to MS.
Or perhaps the timing is just a coincidence and MS is doing this to everyone with
Windows XP:

Based on the instructions at the Kaspersky site, I turned off Norton temporarily, and
tried to download. I received a message inside an IE window which said:

Starting Java applet failed! Please go online to use this program.

I noticed that some IE Add-ons are disabled. Is that the problem with the failed download?

I'm 100% confident that I did not do anything that could cause that to happen!

I will check up with some of the folks here whether there's anything I can/should do about the legitimacy issue.

For the online scan, it's not unheard of that Kaspersky fails, not a problem as I have plenty of other good scans in the bag - we'll run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • If your antivirus software warns you of suspicious activity, you'd best temporarily disable the software. If no conflicts occur, then it's not advisable to disable your antivirus software.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Thanks for the reassurance. It is easy to get panicky when there is a change in PC behavior.

I was able to go into Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons
and enable a new Java add-on that I saw there to get Kaspersky to run. It took a long time
to download the database and then run the scan. The functionality of the program was
somewhat different than the instructions indicated, but here is the scan report:
