Mysterious problem

Unread postby Snake.exe » April 17th, 2009, 8:16 pm

Hello.

A day ago I began to experience a problem where my computer would refuse to resolve host names and would not load any websites. When this happened I could ping IPs and domains with no packet loss. Using ipconfig /release and then /renew would fix this problem and sites would load again, but the problem would reoccur within 20 - 30 minutes. When the net was unresponsive, some programs such as MSN Messenger and Xfire would freeze, I would be unable to close Firefox unless I killed the process in task manager, and bringing up cmd and using ipconfig /release would hang the computer. If I tried to restart the computer while the net was hanging, it would shut some programs down but would not restart until the internet was working normally again. If I booted up while the net was malfunctioning, my desktop froze and if I attempted to open an internet-using program the whole computer froze with it.

I eventually decided to restore the computer to the day prior to when this began to happen. I had no further problems. Incidentally it happened to be the day before I installed Microsoft's latest updates. I reinstalled these updates, restarted the computer and still I have not encountered this problem again.

I'm not sure what exactly happened, so I wanted to check to see if there may be or may have been anything unwanted on this PC.

Here's my Hijack log, and thanks for any help you can provide. I am currently in the process of running a scan with Panda Activescan, so if you would like the report when it is finished I will certainly post the results.

EDIT: The symptoms reappeared, and I had to restore again. Once again I restored to prior to installing the updates. This is extremely frustrating. I cannot find any information on networking issues after installation of the latest Windows updates.

Hi. After using system restore my internet hiccups have not yet returned. I restored to a point before I installed the latest Windows updates. I then installed only the updates that did not in any way affect anything related to the internet. I am still afraid to install the remaining updates, as each time after installing them my internet would not work properly. I don't know if this is a malware issue, which is why I wanted to double check. I'm not sure if my problems are/were the result of a conflict with my firewall. Turning the firewall off would not affect the problem while my connection was unstable.

Here are the logs from RSIT.

Hi Snake.exe,

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time.
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms".
It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to Add/Remove Porgrams in the control panel and remove one of two programs in the following.

AntiVir
ZoneAlarm Security

The choice is yours. but I will recommend you unistall Zone Alarm Security. Due to malware issues, the Zone Alarm Firewall sometimes may block any access to the internet, and causing the malfunction of your browser.
If you hold on AntiVir and need adding an extra standalone firewall, we will recommend some free programs for you in my ending speech. But if you had a router already, it seems that you have been protected by a hardware firewall. You may ignore this option.

I also notice you have one registry cleaner, Advanced SystemCare, installed in your system. We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners. We suggest uninstalling it via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel. There are some excellent writeups as follows:

http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099
http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/ ... ng_13.html

Step1

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here or Here.

  1. Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  2. Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  3. If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.
  4. In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  5. Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish. For more info, go to Here for your reference.
  6. Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Step2

Please run a BitDefender Online Scan---Please use Internet Explorer

  1. Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  2. Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  3. Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  4. Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  5. When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  6. Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post back:

1.Gmer log
2.BitDefender online report
3.New HJT log.

Tell me how your pc is running now.

Unread postby Snake.exe » April 26th, 2009, 7:43 pm

Hi davis,

I'm aware of the potential for conflicts between multiple antivirus applications and real-time protection. I have ZoneAlarm's antivirus function disabled for that very reason. I use ZoneAlarm's antivirus as a second opinion on-demand scanner. I am also not behind a router. While there is a registry cleaning feature in Advanced System Care, I do not use it. CCleaner also has a registry cleaning feature, which I do not use either. I use those apps for junk file cleaning only.

My PC runs smoothly, I'm not having problems. My internet has thus far been stable. I still have not attempted to reinstall four of April's Windows updates (KB963027, KB952004, KB956572, KB960803). Those are the only updates that affect the net. Ideally I would like to be able to install them without any issues occurring. I think I may disable some programs (e.g., TeaTimer) and try to install them again and see what happens.

Here are the logs you requested.

I don't know how to post the BitDefender scanner results. It was exported to the desktop as an .html file and if I post its contents directly in this message box they don't display correctly. I can't attach the file to this message either. In any case, it detected nothing.

Hi Snake.exe,

they don't display correctly

You can right click that .html file choosing open with txt file. Then it can be posted here. Can you post that log?

Don't get your windows updates right now. We need to check your status a little bit. Thanks.

<By the way, I just rephrase my response if you have checked this post already.>

Hi,

Apologies, I reinstalled the updates before reading your reply. I successfully installed KB956572, KB952004, and KB960803 all at once and the problems have returned. Intermittently the internet connection just seems to lapse into a coma and any internet-accessing program freezes, sometimes hanging the system with it. Looks like I'll have to restore again.

I tried opening the BitDefender scan log in Notepad like you suggested in my previous response, but it all shows up in HTML rendering it illegible. I just copied down everything from the log itself so you can see the results.

Hi Snake.exe,

Let's troubleshoot your problem.

At first, please uninstall all ZoneAlarm components from Add/Remove Programs, not just disable it. Then Start your IE to see how it goes. if the problem still persists,

Please unisntall 3 updates from Add/Remove Programs (check Show Updates box on the top). Reboot your pc. Now, you can start your update, but just one update for once and to test which one causes the problem.

Tell me how it goes.

Hi davis,

I did as you said and the problem persisted after I uninstalled ZoneAlarm. I also uninstalled the three updates, and after that the internet was functional once more. I reinstalled the three updates again, one at a time, and the problem returned after the installation of KB956572. After having researched this update, I have found information on others reporting this problem, although reports seem to be scarce, and it does not seem to be listed in Microsoft's knowledge base of known issues regarding this update.

Oddly enough I have managed to install this update on three other computers in the house, all running XP (all three have ZoneAlarm too), and no problems.

Hi Snake.exe,

I have checked some Microsoft's knowledge base and other resources, but it seems to no avail.

Since it belongs to Microsoft update issues, MS do has an online support and you may try it.---> http://support.microsoft.com/common/int ... x?rdpath=4

Other than that, I will recommend you to some appropriate forums to troubleshoot your problem since this issue is not malware related if you feel comfortable. Please go to Here and Here. Hope it helps.

Now, you are all clean. Let's do some housecleaning.

  1. Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  2. Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  3. Click the CleanUp! button.
  4. Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  5. If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  6. The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  7. Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Now that your system is clean, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - Now, you are free of virus. You should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    Turn off System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Turn ON System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points and make a new one.

  2. Update your antivirus programs

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check

  3. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  4. Install a-squared Free -a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Clean your PC with a-squared Free

  5. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"
Read some information Here how to prevent Malware.

Glad to be of help. Safe surfing!!

Hi,

I submitted a support request to Microsoft. Hopefully they'll be able to address the problem. In the mean time I will just have to live without KB956572.

Thanks for your help davis! :D I'll certainly be returning to this site if I need any help in the future.

Best regards.
