Redirection Virus: HJT Log file included

Unread postby Mr Js Girl » April 28th, 2009, 7:03 pm

I was having problems logging into my online bnaking and thankfully called my bank and they said I most likely had a redirection virus. I've run Spybot but it's apparently not picking it up. I've noticed that it's causing my computer to run very slowly as well. This is a computer that my mother used for about a year before I got it so I'm sure there might be a few things lingering from her usage of it. I'm running Windows XP. Here's my HJT log file which I'm pretty sure I did right. Where do I go from here? Thank you.

Re: Redirection Virus: HJT Log file included

Unread postby ktreffin » May 2nd, 2009, 10:31 am

Hi Mr Js Girl, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

I am sorry that there has been such a delay in getting to your log.

If you still need assistance, please do the following:

Step #1: Please post a new Hijack This Log

  • Launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step #2: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

If you have been able to get the problem resolved, please let me know so I can have this topic closed.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Redirection Virus: HJT Log file included

Hi Alice,

Thanks for the new log. I do need to see the Uninstall list from HijackThis. In order to get this, can you please do the following (just make sure you follow the steps):

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

I am reviewing the new HijackThis log now, but if you could get me that Uninstall list I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Redirection Virus: HJT Log file included

Great! Thanks for the Uninstall list. There is one other thing that we need to address before we begin.

I see in your HijackThis log that there is a P2P program installed (BitTorrent DNA). Although it doesn't show in your uninstall list, it is the policy of this site to insure that it is removed before we begin cleaning things up.

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
  • If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.
  • If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programmes, we will refuse our help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

It appears that you have the following P-2-P program(s) installed
BitTorrent DNA

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    BitTorrent DNA

NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Please let me know regarding the status of the program. As long as it is no longer on your system, then we can get started.

Thanks for your understanding,
Ken

Hello Ken,

I apologize for the delay of my response. I did indeed remove Bit Torrent and all of it's components to the best of my knowledge. If I need to post another Hijack This log to confirm the removal, please let me know and I will post it ASAP.

Thank you,
Alice

Hi Alice,

Great. Thanks!! Seeing it has been a week since the last HijackThis log was posted, it would be a good idea to see a new one. Can you please post a new HijackThis log? Thanks!

Hi Alice,

Before we begin, I need to stress some important points to you.
  • Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.
  • If at any time you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Ready? Lets go....

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Manager Service, click Remove.

How to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
    • Open AOL
    • Go to Help on the toolbar
    • Select About AOL
    • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.

*==============================================*

Step #1: Disable Teatimer

Please disable Teatimer as it may interfere with the fix.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings in TeaTimer.

*==============================================*

Step #2: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

O2 - BHO: BHO - {ABD45510-9B22-41cd-9ACD-8182A2DA7C63} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iehelper.dll (file missing)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.craigslist.org

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

*===============================================*

Step #4: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks,
Ken

I did notice in the process of the scan it went through folders that I had previously sent to and deleted from the recycle bin. Is this because of the fact that you can never really "fully delete" information from your hard drive until you totally wipe it? If that's what it is I fully understand but if not, would you mind explaining? I am also going to do a reboot now to successfully delete the files that required the reboot. If I did something improperly or there are more things that I need to do, please let me know and I will get the requested information to you ASAP.

Thanks,
Alice

Hi Alice,

Was the HijackThis log that you posted done before you rebooted the computer? If so, please post a new HijackThis log to make sure the reboot got rid of everything.

Thanks!

Hi Alice,

Great!! Things are looking good. How are things running? What kind of problems if any are you still having?

We still have a couple of things to do:

Step #1: Update Java

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 13.

  • Go to HERE
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

*==============================================*

Step #2: Run ESET Online Scan

Please do an online scan with ESET Online Scanner. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.
  • Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click on the Start button next to it.
  • When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.
  • You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.
  • Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  • After the scanner is initialized, click Start.
  • Uncheck (untick) Remove found threats box.
  • Check (tick) Scan unwanted applications.
  • Click on Scan.
  • It will start scanning. Please be patient.
  • Once the scan is done, the log will be saved here: C:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt.

*==============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the ESET Online Scan Report
  • Let me know how things are running

Thanks,
Ken
