AGV Behaving oddly even after a Malwarebytes scan&fix

Unread postby Rennie » April 16th, 2009, 7:10 pm

Noticed that AGV was behaving oddly, after daily scan it all of a sudden said 0 to all warnings, threats, viruses etc. Normally when I run AGV it will come up with heaps of warning which it doesn't.

Ran Malwaebytes and found a couple of trojans and a virus (which AGV did not pick up in the first place, I scan every document I download).

Still AGV seems to scan no warnings and worried it is not working.

Please see log below

thanks for help

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi Rennie and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Next:

I would like to review the log produced when you ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware please. It can be found here:

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click on the Logs radio tab.

Next:

Lets carry out a more in-depth scan of your computer as follows:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please.

Hi Dakeyras,
thanks for your help with this.

Find below all 3 requested logs each in his own post.

System seems to be running ok, little slow, some odd issues with IE8. At times it gives me an exception error which seems to be random.
AGV updates and scans but still it does tell me at end of scan zero threats etc etc, which is odd as there have always been warnings from firewall part.

Occasionally I get a popup bubble in toolbar saying my firewall is disabled but when I check it never is. For the rest, just worried to do anything, not doing any actions online which require a password access atm.

*seriously cheesed off with self for getting infected somehow*

Re: AGV Behaving oddly even after a Malwarebytes scan&fix

Unread postby Dakeyras » April 25th, 2009, 8:26 pm

Hi :)

Hi Dakeyras,
thanks for your help with this.
You're welcome!

System seems to be running ok, little slow, some odd issues with IE8. At times it gives me an exception error which seems to be random.
Well IE8 has only just been recently released from its Beta program so still prone to glitch's and we may have to consider a rollback to IE7. Something is not right either way:
Total RAM: 2038 MB (8% free)
With 2GB of RAM installed even with the unnecessary start ups you have there should be far more available system memory than is at present. Apart from a possible IE8 issue, malware is a likely suspect here from reviewing the logs your good self provided myself.

Thanks for the information and a prudent move limiting on-line activities for the time being

*seriously cheesed off with self for getting infected somehow*
Understandable. OK a question if I may, I do not recognize a application you have installed, namely: Dummy

Do you recognize this at and or is it something to do with a on-line website pertaining to music etc?

At present the Internet Explorer Main Start Page appears to be a website,(safe I will add from my research) this may be your own etc, either way please be aware as part of the malware removal process one of the specific anti-malware tools I will be asking your good self to use shortly may reset this to the Microsoft default. If it does you may reset it again yourself after I give the all clear.

Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Next:

Please download Rooter.exe to your desktop.
  • Then double-click it to start the tool.
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt.
  • Post the contents of Rooter.txt in your next reply.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and Firewall applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs can be read here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use. ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Answer to my application query RE: Dummy.
  • Rooter Log.
  • ComboFix Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Hi again,
Dummy doesnt ring a bell at all. Will do a search and see where it is installed maybe that ring a bell.

Also, my smarter half is not home atm and not sure where he hid the cd/dvd's so will need to do the backup tonight, and as such wont be able to reply to your questions for 24hrs, don't want to do this without the backup.

thanks for your amazingly fast reply.

Btw not sure if the RAM is so low because I was running a ton of applications when I did as requested. Sorry should have run this I suppose without any programmes running.

Will redo and see if the RAM changes, would you like a new log posted run without any applications started?

Rennie

EDIT: Ok did a search see attached image for resultsHighlights:
Red: Application called UPK/OnDemand e-learning tool - Oracle application
Blue: Moment: Photobook creation tool
Green: e-commerce - something thats used for my website (where my internet explorer defaults to)

none of these are running that I know of, at least I wasnt running them. So not sure which of the 3 gave the dummy message

Absolutely fine

thanks for your amazingly fast reply.
You're very welcome! Plus my turn to sit up with my teething little one anyway ...

Btw not sure if the RAM is so low because I was running a ton of applications when I did as requested. Sorry should have run this I suppose without any programmes running.

Will redo and see if the RAM changes, would you like a new log posted run without any applications started?
Aye could be a cause as some of the applications are quite resource intensive. No need to rerun RSIT for the time being, I can ask for that particular log again further down the road so to speak. Just create the backups as a precaution then carry on with the instructions after-wards. IE: Rooter, Combofix and a new HijackThis Log when ready, no rush OK but as a precaution remember to limit on-line activities during the malware removal process, otherwise a good chance more malware could gain a foothold.

Ohhhh fun fun! Might want to try and give him/her a detailed very complex explanation about your job  might put him/her to sleep utterly exhausted

Ok, blonde question, you mean don't surf or mean disable internet access while doing the above requested? LOL feeling like an idiot, SAP expert and never had to deal with a situation like this, I am so utterly paranoid about viruses etc (because of my job) that people ridicule me, but baffled how this ever got on my pc?

have a nice night, hope lil one sleeps peacefully

Hi :)

Tried that ;)

Aye I do mean do not surf around unnecessarily, no need to actually disable internet access though at this point in time but it would be prudent to power down your computer when not in use as a extra precaution. The only idiot in my eyes is one who does not ask a question :)

I am so utterly paranoid about viruses etc (because of my job) that people ridicule me, but baffled how this ever got on my pc?
Ignore them, sticks and stones as they say and you took the correct course of action seeking assistance. As to how your computer got infected a few likely candidates/scenarios but I will address these as we proceed OK

have a nice night, hope lil one sleeps peacefully
Thank you!
