Possible trojan/malware/spyware problem

Unread postby Cocokure » April 9th, 2009, 11:39 pm

Hello,

My aunt is experiencing some weird issues with her computer and was hoping that you can help. She was browsing the internet and suddenly started receiving pop-up messages, supposedly from Windows. The messages told her that her computer was infected with trojans and instructed her to download some programs to correct the problem. She did not install the programs, but is still receiving the pop-ups. I ran HijackThis for her and attached the logfile below.

Thanks so much for your help!
Chris

Hi Cocokure

Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
alternate download site
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other unning programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

Hello and thanks so much for your reply!

I followed all of your instructions, but I am having some problems running the gmer scan. Everytime I try to run it, it stops working and gives me the following Windows error: "gmer.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly..." If I try to run the program again, the computer crashes. I have even tried doing it in safe mode to no avail. I've noticed that the scan seems to stop while its scanning the \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1 directory.
What should I do now?

Thanks!

Hi Again -

I tried renaming the file, but I am still getting the same error (even in safe mode). Any ideas?

Thanks for your help!

Then we try this instead:

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop.
  • Then double-click it to start the tool.
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here.

Hi there!

Sorry that it took me so long to get back to you. I wasn't sure if I needed to run this scan in safe mode (which I did not), so please let me know if I need to run it again. Listed below is the text from the scan. Thanks again for you help!

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

Post:

- mbam log
- rsit logs (taken after mbam run)

Re: Possible trojan/malware/spyware problem

Unread postby Shaba » April 23rd, 2009, 1:03 am

It looks good :)

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

OK -- The Kasersky Scan didn't return anything in the report (no malicious files detected), so there was nothing for me to attach. So, below is a fresh HijackThis log. Is she OK now?

Thanks!
Chris

I haven't seen anything odd since I have been working with it and she has been afraid to use it. I'll have her keep an eye on it and let me know if she has any other problems.

Thanks again for everything that you do and keep up the good work! :D
