Unread postby Susan528 » December 30th, 2005, 12:38 am

Hello Fishstyx and Welcome to Malware Removal,

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later.

Download this file and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Download and install Ewido Security Suite Trial from here. Run and update the program but do not scan with it yet.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

While in safe mode, double click on the HSfix.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Then Open cwshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

run716.exe
apimf.exe
appyo32.exe
atlor32.exe
popcorn72.exe
ntou32.exe
sysyk32.exe

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

C:\DOCUME~1\SHAD&J~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\21F5.tmp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\popcorn72.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntou32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dxwea.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ietz.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\run716.exe
C:\WINDOWS\apimf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appyo32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlor32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysyk32.exe

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\dxwea.dll/sp.html#77035
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\dxwea.dll/sp.html#77035
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\dxwea.dll/sp.html#77035
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\dxwea.dll/sp.html#77035
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\dxwea.dll/sp.html#77035
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\dxwea.dll/sp.html#77035
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {88204317-4193-5465-3672-D014877AA017} - C:\WINDOWS\ietz.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [alij] C:\WINDOWS\system32\run716.exe dummy
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [apimf.exe] C:\WINDOWS\apimf.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [appyo32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\appyo32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atlor32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlor32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ControlPanel] C:\WINDOWS\system32\popcorn72.exe rundll.dll,LoadMouseProfile
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntou32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntou32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [sysyk32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysyk32.exe

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it. Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it. Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Now navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe. Click Begin Removal to allow AboutBuster to scan. When it has finished, AboutBuster will open a 'Scan Completed' window. Click OK. Another information window will open. Click on Exit. AboutBuster will inform you that a log has been created. Click OK. I will need you to post that log later.

Run Ewido and do a full System Scan with it. Let it clean anything it finds. Save the report it creates.

Now reboot, and run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log and the Ewido log.

Hello Fishstyx,

I do not think you will have problems with ewido and a2 but I am currently trying to find out information about that.

But let’s continue with the fixes.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix. [br]To disable Ewido:
From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.

Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.
The following items are malware and must be fixed

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O2 - BHO: Class - {9101E79D-A1A7-196F-75D9-D469880131A5} - C:\WINDOWS\nethv32.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: Class - {DF6C88D3-FA3F-481B-70C2-BD5213D346AF} - C:\WINDOWS\mfctr.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:
Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:

control.exe
rundll32.exe
wmplayer.exe
msconfig.exe
notepad.exe
shell.dll
SDHelper.dll

If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from Merijn's Files and follow the instructions at that site to install them where they belong for your OS.

Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.

Run an online antivirus scan at:

Trend Micro

Reboot

Finally, scan again with HijackThis once more and post your logfile just to make sure that there is nothing left to fix

Hello Fishstyx,

Your hijackthis log is clean. You are right that you should not have SDHelper now because it is part of SpyBot. Instructions below include the installation of SpyBot.

Ewido should be compatible with a2
http://www.ewido.net/en/compatibility/

Here are the final instructions.

STEP 1.
======
Cleanmgr
To clean temporary files:
  1. Go > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
  2. Scan your system for files to remove.
  3. Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  4. Click OK to remove those files.
  5. Click Yes to confirm deletion.

STEP 2.( Windows XP only)
======
Prefetch Folder
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\
Delete All files in this folder but not the Prefetch folder

STEP 3.- Only for Windows XP
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    Turn off System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. Check Turn off System Restore.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 4.
======
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  2. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  3. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  4. Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.
    Test Firewall

  5. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  6. Visit the Microsoft Office Update Site Frequently-If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free)

  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.
