Spy Sheriff and maybe a few friends

Unread postby KurtArndorfer » December 29th, 2005, 1:26 am

I have been having trouble today since this Spy Sheriff decided to install itself on my computer. I have Microsoft AntiSpyware running, which seemed to catch it beforfe it was installed. I had it go through the removal process, but when it rebooted, I got an error message saying that explorer could not initialize, error 0xc0000022. I tried to open the task manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, but got the message that the administrator had disabled that feature (or something like that). I booted in safe mode and got on another computer to solve the problem. Four hours later, I think I have most of the bad stuff removed, but I still get the explorer error.

I followed the instructions on the "click here before posting" with the exception of downloading updates, since I can't get online with that computer. I had already taken most of the steps, but I went ahead and did them again in case the order mattered. Any help would be MOST appreciated. I have not used hijackthis before, so if I did anything stupid, please forgive.

Hi there, and welcome to the forums!

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemLoader] C:\WINDOWS\sysldr32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HostSrv] C:\WINDOWS\sachostx.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Filter: text/plain - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: msupdate - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msupdate32.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\sysldr32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sachostx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msupdate32.dll

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Thank you so much for your help. I was able to get a tech guy from work to walk me through the process of fixing everything. I can't tell you how much I appreciate what you are doing here, so instead I donated the entire contents of my Paypal account to you. I wish it were more than $7.00 US, but alas, that's all of it. Thank you for what you are doing.

Thank you - I can confirm the receipt.

What was stopping your booting to normal mode. Looking through your log now, I can see no more malware.
