i just baught this computer used and want to make sure everything is good to go on it. Sometimes when i log in a little symbol is on my desktop and it says Gear.exe. Can you Help?? Here is my hijackthis log:

Hi there, and welcome to the forums! :)

Please print out the following instructions so you have them readily at hand, or you can copy them into a Notepad text file.

You are running HijackThis from the Desktop; please create a folder for it on the Desktop, name it HJT or HijackThis, and use your mouse to drag the program into the new folder.

Your log looks pretty good right now; however, you are using LimeWire. This is not technically malware by itself, but it is known to install malware and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. If you opt to remove it, stop the running process...

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

LimeWire.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Now, use "Add/Remove Programs" to remove any reference to LimeWire.

Next, close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following, making sure you get just this one and no others by mistake:

O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe

Click on "Fix Checked" when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder, and delete it:

C:\Program Files\LimeWire\

Exit Explorer, and reboot.

Next, download, install, and run CCleaner (so the following scans won't take as long because CCleaner will clear out temporary files) *NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on "Options" at the top of the window, then click on the "advanced" button. deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours." Click on "OK."
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.


Please download Ad-Aware SE Personal and install it. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, please configure it as indicated below. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware, please uninstall your current version and install the newest version SE 1.06.

1) Run Ad-Aware, and click Check for updates now.

2) Select Configurations (click the Gear wheel at the top) as follows:
  • General Button > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
  • Tweak Button > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
Click Proceed.

3) To start the scan, Click > "Scan Now" at left
  • Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Select "Search for low-risk threats"
  • Select "Perform full system scan"
  • Click Next
4) When the scan has completed, select Next.
  • In the Scanning Results window, select the "Critical Objects" tab.
  • Right-click on the screen and choose "Select all objects"
  • Click Next to remove the infections found, and click OK to the prompt.
  • Restart the computer.

Please download ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu."
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the "OK" button
  • The program will now go to the main screen

    You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start

    The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    After the updates are installed, exit ewido.


    Once the updates are installed do the following:

  • If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.
  • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
    • Click OK
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

    Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.

  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop


Reboot into normal mode.


Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

Please post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.
