My HiJack This Log -- & your Help please

Unread postby bad-malware » March 21st, 2009, 12:25 am

EDIT: Mar. 24, Tuesday.

My computer has now completely crashed. Any links to ways to fix it would be appreciated. I have seen the links on the flatten and rebuild, but don't understand what is meant by flatten?

What happened was: my system was doing an auto update of windows xp service pack 3. Half-way through install I got error message 'access denied'. It then started uninstalling.

This morning, I got only the following message (and same message when I tried safe mode):
STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} System can't load hive (file:):
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent or not writable.
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact system admin... etc.

I *know* this is not what you do here ... but if you can point me in the right direction. I'm using a computer at a local library to write this. I do have the Windows CD, as well as a complete back-up/ghost using Acronis and Maxtor from 2 weeks ago. But I am just terrified to do anything right now ... and risk losing what data is stored there by not proceeding correctly.

Please, any help or links. Thank you.

------ My original message below ------

Hope you can help me. SpySweeper gave me message of 'mal/behav-160' and could not quarantine it. Here's the log file from HiJack This. Thank you.

Hi peku006. Thanks for responding.

First - I had a complete system crash. Had to re-install windows (recovered a few files). Then, restored using a back-up image.

Because of this, I just ran a new HiJack this log and am posting it below. I will also go right away and do the other scan and logs you requested.

Here's the Hijackthis log I just ran:

Hi bad-malware

multiple Anti Virus programs

It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

    AV: Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus
    AV: Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus
    AV: Kaspersky Anti-Virus

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having three anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

its your call but you need to uninstall two, of them......
With that done, please post back a fresh HiJackThis log

Thanks peku006

Hi peku006,

I uninstalled SpySweeper.

Can't find SpyWare Doctor. Pretty sure i uninstalled when I got SpySweeper. At any rate, it is not in my add/remove programs list and didn't turn up in a search. Can you tell me where to find it/remove it?

Just a note: SpySweeper is the program that found the 'mal/behav-160'. All the other scans I ran (online: Kaspersky, Eset, Housecall, and downloaded: SpywareBlaster, Super Anti-Spyware, MalwareBytes) didn't find it.

Anyway - uninstalled SpySweeper. Waiting on how to uninstall Spyware Doctor. And here's the new HiJack this Log.

Thank you. :)

Hi bad-malware

Sorry for the delay, I didn't get an Email that you responded.
Completely remove Spyware Doctor

1 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Checked (ticked) all items except items in the System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.

    Image
  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
2 a fresh HijackThis log
description of any problems you are having with your PC

Hi again peku066.

Below is the HiJack this log.

Symptoms: My computer is running slow. Sometimes will 'hang'. I am getting a lot of things with the new install of Kapersky and not sure what I should delete and what I should quarantine.

*** Thank you again *** :)

Hi bad-malware
I am getting a lot of things with the new install of Kapersky and not sure what I should delete and what I should quarantine.

Can you tell me a little more detail what they are and where are located?

For general slowness, see here

1 - Clean temp files

    Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

    Under Main choose:
      Windows Temp
      Current User Temp
      All Users Temp
      Temporary Internet Files
      Prefetch
      Java Cache

      *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.
    if you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
    if you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

2 - F-Secure Online Scan
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Go here to run an online scan from F-Secure
  • Click on Start scanning
  • This will open a new internet explorer window
  • It will require an activex control, please install it
  • Click Accept
  • Click Full System Scan
  • It will now download the scanner, this may take a while, please be patient
  • It will then start scanning, wait for the scan to finish
  • Click Automatic cleaning (recommended)
  • Wait for it finish the cleaning process
  • Click show report
  • This will open up a window with the results of the scan, copy and paste those results as a reply to this topic

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the F-Secure online scanner report
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Hi peku006:

I'm having trouble with Kaspersky. It's returning so much I don't whether I should delete or quarantine. My other two anti-virus were pretty much plug 'n play and I can't figure out what to do with Kas. I haven't had time to find a proper tutorial to set it up.

Anyway, this is what the Kaspersky full scan found (in brief) --- b/c it found almost 600 incidents.

--- HEUR:Trojan.Script.Iframer (location: my files and documents)

--- (snippet from log) --- TONS of these (location: most in my program files- TONS in quicktime):
4/1/2009 3:23:26 PM Detected: http://www.viruslist.com/en/advisories/32991 C:\Program Files\java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\javaws.exe
4/1/2009 3:23:26 PM Detected: http://www.viruslist.com/en/advisories/34451

More on the other tasks in following post (and a little later on.)

Hi peku006,

Sorry for delay --- was my birthday this weekend. :)

I just tried the F-Secure scan. As the scan was downloading, my computer blue-screened. I got a batch of error messages - primarily that something was incompatible with either hardware or software - that it was starting physical memory dump and that I should shut down.

I shut down.

I just spent almost a week trying to recover my data and get my system running again.

Is there another scan that I can do instead of the F-Secure scan?

What should I do next?

Thank you again.

Hi bad-malware

Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Thanks peku006
