Original Post on 3/2/2009: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=40418
Odd Dude Replied on 3/11/2009 with instructions. I was out of town and couldn't reply, so my post was closed.
In response to Odd Dude's request, I ran several scans and posted the results at: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=40912
My post was again closed because I had not run a new HijackThis scan. I ran that scan below. Please help? Thank you!

Already seen them.

Everything looks OK to me. Do you want to research this further or do you think it may not be a malware issue?

Uninstall all Java versions you have installed and download and install the latest version from here. The site is a bit confusing; this is what you should do:
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Choose the correct Platform. Also, check the box that says I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Now, click Continue.
  • Click on the filename under Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop.
  • Now, close all other windows. Including Internet Explorer.
  • You can now install Java by double-clicking the executable you just downloaded.

Update your Adobe Reader
Your version of Adobe Reader is old and may contain security leaks. Please first uninstall the older version, then download and install the newest version from here.

I've done everything suggested by Odd Dude. No luck. The computer still restarts whenever I do any one of the followig: (1) try to install the Windows XP Service Pack 3 update, (2) run an AVG VirusScan, (3) run RegCure (but only when it gets to a certain point, (4) run DriverScanner (seems to shut down when trying to update the Nvidia drivers. Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions?

Hmm....

Maybe they're stop errors but debugging may be turned off.

Reboot your computer and before the Windows logo appears, press F8. From the menu which should appear, pick disable automatic restart on system failure.

Then do one of those things which cause reboots and tell me if you get any error messages such as blue screen errors.

Also, I'd like to check the Event Viewer logs
By viewing the Event Viewer logs we could maybe find out what is wrong.
  • Go to Start
  • Click on Run
  • In the box, type eventvwr
  • Look at the System and Application log files and note any that are red
  • We need to know the Event ID and Source.

It doesn't look like this issue is malware related. If this turns up nothing, I'm afraid I'll have to refer you to a forum which can offer non-malware-related assistance.

Post next whether you got any error messages after disabling automatic restart on system failure and doing anything which normally causes your computer to reboot, and post any interesting Event Viewer logs.

Doing various scans (MS update XP service pack 3, AVG virus scan, driver scanner and reg cure) resulted in two blue screens. All identical except for the STOP numbers. Both blue screens said "Problem detected, windows shut down to prevent dmg. Check to see if adequate disc space. If driver identified, disable the driver or check with manuf for driver updates. Try changing video adapters" Then "check with hardware vendor for BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory optins, such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode, ..." "STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0x806354EB, 0XA07F6BB4, 0X000000)" and on a later Blue Screen "STOP: 0X0000007E (0X80000003, 0X8052A848, 0XBACFBB9C, 0XBACFB898" then both Blue Screens said beg phys memory dump complete.

The Event Logs had various Red events, I listed the ones that happened last night primarily, but noted some Application Logs from before, including:

SYSTEM Log
3/18: DCOM 10010
3/18: Service Control Manager 7011
3/18: System Error 1003
3/18: System Control Manager 7034
3/18: DCOM 10005

APPLICATION Log
3/18: nview_info 1
3/18: Application Error 1001
3/18: Application Error 1000
2/26: Application Hang 1001
2/26: Application Hang 1002
2/26: COM+ 4689

Any thoughts?

I went to HP's web site and downloaded an updated BIOS driver. Still had the Blue Screen mentioning the BIOS issue. There's plenty of free disc space on the computer. Don't know how to disable or remove BIOS caching or shadowing. I have used DriverScanner to scan and update drivers. It updates all the out of date ones except when it gets to the Nvidia driver installation, it always shuts down/restarts, or when I disable shut down/restart, I get the Blue Screen.

Thank you!!!!!

Okay, this is helpful.

The error 0x8E likely means that some of your computer's RAM has gone bad.

I can't, unfortunately, help you with that, as this forum offers malware support only. For help with issues as these, see forums as www.bleepingcomputer.com

Would you like tips to prevent malware infections in the future?

This is what I usually post to people who are clean of malware:

  • Turn on Automatic Updates if you have not done so. It is MANDATORY to keep your Windows updated, otherwise you are vulnerable to exploits! To turn on Automatic Updates: click Start > Control Panel > Security Centre > Automatic Updates.

Below are optional items. They will increase your security, but are not really "needed". That said, I recommend following at least one of these tips.

  • Install WinPatrol from here. Instructions for use are here.

  • Install a custom hosts file. Let's say I have a directory of 640kb's worth of bad sites. Let's say I can make sure you will never be able to access those sites, so you will never get any infection from those sites. It's like blocking a site - without site blocking tools. How would you like to never be able to visit (a lot, but not all of the) malware-infected sites again? Well, now you can!
First, we must disable a service, as Windows cannot work with a very large hosts file while that service is active. This will not affect anything else.
    The disabling routine:
    • Click Start, then Run
    • Copy and paste the following:
      Code: Select all
      sc config dnscache start= disabled
    • Click OK
Next, you can download the custom hosts file from here. Installation instructions can be found there as well.
