Win32 Virut virus, I think

Unread postby tweeter14 » March 11th, 2009, 8:21 pm

This happened a couple days ago, not completely sure where I got it. I believe it is Win32 Virut because I saw that mentioned during a Cureit scan that I did. I have the free version of AVG antivirus and it has been finding various trojans (I have the names if need be) since this whole thing started. I just downloaded the AVG made fixer for the Win32 Virut virus, which was going well until it randomly decided to put my computer on standby and then it wouldn't load up again. :(
Please help! I'd really rather not have to do a complete wipe of my computer. I am fairly computer savvy, but fixing this virus is completely over my head. Dang, is it evil!! :x

Here is my hijackthis report:

Re: Win32 Virut virus, I think

Unread postby NonSuch » March 12th, 2009, 2:04 pm

I am sorry, but I have very bad news for you. This machine has Virut and other infections as well, but Virut is the worst of it.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

It is imperative that your system be reformated and your Windows operating system be reinstalled. This is necessary because Virut is a virulent file infector that will infect every .exe and .scr file on your system, and .rar files as well. As an added "bonus," Virut is a poorly written and buggy file infector, which is why our scanners cannot properly disinfect the files and, since many of these infected files will be vital system files, they cannnot simply be removed.

So, the situation is that the files cannot be removed, nor can they be properly disinfected. This leaves only one choice, reformat and reinstall the Windows operating system.

Prior to reformatting the system, the hard drive could be removed and attached to another system as a "slave," thereby allowing you to remove and salvage your data files. No files should be saved other than documents and pictures. No screensavers, no executables, no program set-up files... just documents and pictures. Otherwise, the infection will be reintroduced to the newly reinstalled operating system. All data files should be scanned with anti-virus and anti-spyware programs prior to being returned to the hard drive after it has been reformatted. If you are not comfortable performing this procedure yourself, we would advise you to take the computer to a reliable, local, computer repair shop and have them do the work for you.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I figured as much. Thanks for your reply.
Now my problem is to find the disks to perform the boot!! Grrr!

To be optimistic, I guess I'll have a speedy clean computer after all is said and done.

You're welcome. :)

In the long run, you'll be glad you did the reformat and reinstall.

As this issue will be resolved with a reformat, this topic is now closed.
