Need help removing malware

Unread postby Anitha » March 5th, 2009, 3:58 pm

Hi I am Anitha. I have a Win XP system that is connected to the internet via a wireless router. My system has been infected by some malware. I have avast virus protection as well as Macafee. Still it got through. I keep getting popups while I browse with internet explorer. I downloaded and tried Mozilla, and I still get the popups. Browsing and the system in general have become very slow. Several trojan remover programs that I downloaded, are detecting a bunch of malware, but I am not willing to buy any of them at the moment unless it's the last resort. I hope you can help me out. Thanks. Here is my Hijackthis log:

Re: Need help removing malware

Unread postby peku006 » March 10th, 2009, 5:32 am

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

    Avast
    Macafee

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

    Please remove one of them.

1 - Scan With ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to Temporarily Disable Anti-virus

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Hi peku006, Thank you for responding and helping out.
I uninstalled Avast antivirus software per your suggestion. I now run only Macafee.

However I made a mistake and feel really foolish for not being able to follow simple instructions! I forgot to disable mcafee before running combofix. It seemed to disable it automatically, so I am not sure if not disabling it was a problem or not - also I was not sure if I should redo the whole process after disabling it - I decided to post the logs and then follow the next steps based on your reply. BTW as I am posting here, Internet explorer still threw a nasty popup at me :( Here are the logs you requested:

alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • The log can also be found here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

4 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

5 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the OTMoveIt3 log
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Re: Need help removing malware

Unread postby Anitha » March 10th, 2009, 5:39 pm

Hi Peku006,
I encountered some problems while running OTMoveIt3. The following are the errors I got:
The application or Dll C:\Windows\System32\tibipifa.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
The application or Dll C:\Windows\System32\nesukifa.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
However I just clicked "ok" to those and continued with the rest of the instructions. My pop up problem seems to have been resolved.. :D Here are the logs:

Hi Anitha

Looking good :)
Let's make sure we got everything

    Under Main choose:
      Windows Temp
      Current User Temp
      All Users Temp
      Temporary Internet Files
      Prefetch
      Java Cache

      *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.
    if you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

2 - F-Secure Online Scan

  1. Please go to F-Secure website to perform an online scan. Click on Start scanning at the bottom of the page.
  2. You may be prompted to install an ActiveX before you are able to accept the License Agreement. If prompted, please install it. After installing, the Accept button will be available.
  3. Click on Accept to accept the License Agreement.
  4. Click on Custom Scan.
    • Under Virus Scan Options, select the Scan whole system option.
    • Under Other Scan Options, select these options:
      • Scan all files
      • Scan whole system for rootkits
      • Scan whole system for spyware
      • Scan inside archives
      • Use advanced heuristics
  5. Click Start.
  6. It will start installing the scanner and virus definitions. Once the installation is done, it will start scanning automatically. This takes a while. Please be patient.
  7. Click on I want decide item by item.
  8. Under Actions, select None for all infections found.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click on Show Report.
  11. Please copy and paste this report in your next reply.
  12. Click Finish.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

Re: Need help removing malware

Unread postby Anitha » March 12th, 2009, 5:17 pm

Hi Peku006,
I just wanted to check-in. I have not been able to complete the F-secure online scan yet. It takes about 8 hours I guess, I had let it run overnight last night and somehow my system got shut down , probably due to pending Windows updates etc. I started running it again this morning and it had completed at around 4.00 PM and while I was proceeding with step#8:"Actions" and clicking next I got an error that basically said I had to close my browser windows. I did that, but the F-secure was back to the initial screen and I was unable to generate the scan report :( . I have started it again at around 4:30 PM - I should have the logs by tomorrow morning.

Also I noticed that F-secure had found several viruses and spyware! (You'll see in the report I guess)
My macafee virus protection does not automatically get enabled everytime the system is booted! I am not sure if my settings are wrong I'll keep checking that. Also Windows security keeps giving the message that my virus softwae is outdated! I update it right away and still the alert doesn't go away...
One good thing is I am no longer getting the pop ups :)

Thanks, Will reply tomorrow with the logs

The computer seems ok now. No more nasty popups. But it did crash once and I had to turn it off and restart it twice before it booted properly.

Thanks,

Anitha.

Hi Anitha

Logs look good, except

it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor
3) PC Tools
4) Sunbelt/Kerio
5) ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Please reply with

a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Hi Peku006,

I downloaded PCTools. One nagging issue I seem to have is that my Mcafee virus protection seems to be disabled on start up even though I have checked the "enable on-access can on startup" . Other than that the PC works great. Here is the log.

Hi Anitha
You can try to run the McAfee Virtual Technician and check if you are able to find any problem with the McAfee Products installed on the computer

Hi Peku006,

I tried McAfee Virtual Technician, and it has resolved the problem. Macafee is automatically enabled during startup now. However, the McAfee Virtual Technician found couple of other issues which it was not able to resolve...I think its because either my license has expired or is not valid for the new upgraded version. I am not too worried about it though.

I think all is well for now. One request: Can you suggest some decent but free virus protection that I can use instead of macafee if possible.

Thanks,

Anitha.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
