Help-the popups are sucking the life out of this computer

Unread postby msolmstead » March 7th, 2009, 9:51 pm

I have no idea if I am doing this right, obviously! NPR said you all were the best.

I keep getting a system memory low due to the pop up ads that keep coming up on the internet.

This is my parents computer and we have no idea why it all of the sudden started doing this. They don't play on the computer themselves. Below is the log.

Thank you!!!

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

I see from your post that you've chosen to use a Registry cleaning programme on your computer.

Registry Cleaner

This is not a good idea.

Your Registry contains millions of settings which determine the operation of your computer, do you really think that altering a few will make any substantive difference to how your computer runs. To edit the Registry safely would require an inbuilt database of all possible settings, for all possible programmes, in all possible computer configurations. To my certain knowledge no Registry cleaner has that capability.

At the best, running one will make no real improvement to the operation of your computer, at the worst it may render it inoperable.

Ask yourself this, is the very real risk worth the almost negligible gain?

Uninstall NewDotNet
Although NewDotNet does not claim to be spyware, it has been associated with computer instability in certain situations. Both SaveNow and NewDotNet have been linked for computer instability according to the MS Knowledge Base Article 302463.

For more information, please see the following:
Description of NewDotNet from the doxdesk parasite database
What is SaveNow and/or New.Net?
Foistware: New Net, Inc. (NewDotNet) DLL

I recommend that you remove NewDotNet unless you deliberately installed it.
Please download LSP-Fix from the following link and save it to a location you can find later if necessary. Do not use this. See ***note below.
LSP-Fix Download Link
Please open Add/Remove programs and uninstall New.Net or NewDotNet. If it is not listed, follow these instructions:
  • From a computer that has Internet access, click on NewDotNet Removal
  • If you get "the page cannot be displayed" when clicking on the removal link.
You may have winhelp's mvps hosts file installed, as www.newdotnet.com is a blocked site
  • Download and save uninstall6_90.exe (New.Net/Support/Uninstall exe file) to the Desktop.
  • Go to the Desktop and double-click on uninstall6_90.exe
  • Click on the OK button.
  • After removal, reboot.
***Note: If you cannot connect to the Internet after removing New.net, please run the LSP-Fix program I had you download earlier, and click on the finish button. Reboot and you should be able to get back on

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
