Unread postby silverheelsbell » February 11th, 2009, 9:55 am

i'm 'puter illiterate (no matter how hard i try, i realize that i am only capable of breaking 'puters--not fixing them!!) and i think this 'puter may be about to go the same way the last one did (it started with a lot of requests for access from zone alarm for something with an ip addy that was just a bunch of zeros & then it quit doing any & all virus scans before taking its final--can i say "dump" on this site??), that or i'm totally nuts, maybe strange zone alarm requests with only zeros are just fine & dandy & they only lead to dead 'puters in my mind?? i really don't know much, so i was hoping someone with a clue might take a look and see what they think?? thanks soo much!!
peggy day

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

These rules are good for you to know:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • If you don't reply within five days after my last instructions this topic will be closed. If you will not be able to reply within five days please tell me how long it will take so the topic will not be closed.

These rules are to make my voluntary work more comfortable:
  • Please be patient. The work I do is voluntary and I also have a private life (school, work, friends and hobbies).
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Also, don't post logs as attachments. Other helpers like to view the logs as well and opening a lot of attachments is irritating. It can also contain malware.

Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Open The Misc Tool Section button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop and post the contents in a reply to this topic. Also post a new HijackThis log.

Regards,
John.

Re: am i doing this right??

Unread postby John B. » March 1st, 2009, 6:29 am

Hi Peggy,

i think i did that wrong...both those lists looked an awful lot alike...this should be the right second one...

Well, from this I can conclude that you are at least a very logical thinker, so helping you should not be a problem even though you might be what you call computer illiterate..

There is not really something which looks bad, but I see a couple of things that we need to clean up. Just regular orphaned things.

Step 1: Disable Ad-Aware Ad-Watch
Please disable Ad-Aware Ad-Watch as it may interfere with the fix.
  • Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
  • At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called Active and Automatic.
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
  • Uncheck both of those boxes.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings in Ad-Aware.

Step 2: Disable Teatimer
Please disable Teatimer as it may interfere with the fix.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings in TeaTimer.

Step 3: Remove HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Gamevance - {0ED403E8-470A-4a8a-85A4-D7688CFE39A3} - C:\Program Files\Gamevance\gamevancelib32.dll (file missing)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F02FABCB-92DD-475A-98AF-14217BD50746} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 4: Delete folder
Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following folder (if present):

C:\Program Files\Gamevance

Now just exit Explorer.

Step 5: Reboot your machine
Just to make sure all the changes have taken effect.

Step 6: Post logs
Please post the following in a reply to this topic:
  • Tell me if you still have the initial problem or now other problems and tell more about it/them
  • Let me know if your ZoneAlarm Security Suite also has Anti-Virus
  • New HijackThis log (not the list but the one you posted when you first asked for help)

Regards,
John.

hay!! thanks soo much for all this help--i really appreciate it!! but i do have a couple of questions before i can do this--first is that in step 1, i need to disable ad-watch from the system tray (which i'm assuming is the bar at the bottom of the screen?) but i only have one icon down there for all of adaware and when i right click it, it's got a few choices, but not active or automatic--one does say disable adwatch-live--is that the one i want?

next is ... what does this mean?
"Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following folder (if present):"
sorry, i really am 'puter illiterate!!

also, i have something i put on here called startuplite (cuz some site--maybe yours?--recommended it) and i thought i'd mention that every time i run it, it says it's going to disable CTFMon.exe next time i start my 'puter but it must not be successful at disabling it, cuz it's always still there next round--i just thought i'd tell ya in case it's a bad thing??

thanks again!! all your time & energy & help is soo wonderful--thank you!! peggy day

Yes, the system tray is the bar at the bottom on the left and yes, please use the Disable AdWatch-Live button :)

next is ... what does this mean?
"Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following folder (if present):"

C:\Program Files\Gamevance

Go to Start and click My Computer. This will bring you to Explorer which is basically any screen you use to browse through your hard drive. Now there is a folder listed under that and to browse to that folder you must be on the My Computer screen. As you can see you must go to C first. Double-click on that and then go to Program Files. Then see if a folder called Gamevance is there. If it is there, right-click and choose to delete it. If it is not there, we do not have to delete anything.

Hope it is fine like this but I am happy that you ask first and I would not bother explaining more detailed..

Regards,
John.

Hi Peggy,

All looks fine. Let's do one more scan to make sure nothing is missed and delete old versions of Java which are left on your system.

Step 1: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

hi there!! i did the stuff you had suggested but i'm wondering, since i deleted everything in add/remove programs that said "java", do i need to add some new java?? (i try to avoid touching anything that says "java" normally, cuz everytime i do, it really screws up my 'puter!!)

also, something weird on my 'puter is that i did a trend housecall scan and it found adware_memwatcher but it wasn't able to fix it and it wouldn't give me any info on what or where it is, but the weird thing is that i ran adaware, zone alarm antivirus & spyware, & spybot and they all found nothing?? not even spyware?? i'm afraid this reminds me of an old 'puter/prob/thing i had two or three years ago, i don't remember exactly but seemed like first it did that (found no infections on my 'puter when there had to be some!!), then it went to where i couldn't ever finish an anti-v anti-s scan at all, and eventually killed that 'puter entirely, but maybe i'm just a lil loopy??

thanks for all your effort!! pdb
