System: Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3, IE7,

Symptoms, in more or less chronological order:
- Vimax ads taking over my Earthink start-up page.
- On normal boot, I get multiple error messages similar to:

svchost.exe application error.
The instruction at "0x7c910cae" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The momory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate program. Click CANCEL to debug the program.

- Cannot update McAfee, AdAware, Spyware Doctor, etc. Message says "Not connected to internet"
- Task Manager CPU usage shows 60%, even with no major apps running.
- Computer slows down and freezes 10-15 minutes after bootup.
- Computer will not boot up in normal mode. Must use Save Mode.
- IE gets hijacked to other sites. Have to go "back" 3 or 4 sites to get back to what I was doing.
- McAfee refers to a "NTOSKRNL-HOOK", and a "Generic Rootkit.d!rootkit"

The Application:
I've deleted the referenced program from my desktop.

LimeWire:
I didn't realize I had Limewire, or any other P2P app on my computer! I never use that stuff. And the kids have not used this computer for months, so I have at least moderate control over what goes on around here!
Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs does indeed list LimeWire 4.18.2. But clicking Remove gets me this message: "An error occured while trying to remove LimeWire 4.18.2. You do not have access to k:\LimeWire\uninstall.exe. You can identify the new uninstall program below." Under that is your typical Browse box, along with OK and Cancel buttons.
Hitting OK gets me the message, "An error occured while trying to remove LimeWire 4.18.2. It may already have been uninstalled. Would you like to remove LimeWire from your Add or Remove Programs list?" Under that are Yes and No buttons. I clicked Yes.

FYI, I searched my c: drive for any file with the string "lime" in the filename, and the only suspicous thing that came up was an empty folder at C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\LimeWire

You're welcome! OK as it stands I do not think this is a malware related issue but not ruling it out just yet.

As I mentioned in a prior post I see signs of a software conflict. If not aware PC Tools Spyware Doctor has a Anti-Virus component with some versions and this may be or not active but I do advise you uninstall this as it may well be the cause of present problems. As it will be causing a conflict with the installed McAfee applications.

I will also list some other applications as optionals highlighted in red that are unnecessary and also will be causing a impact upon your system.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Ad-Aware
iTunes
PC-Doctor 5 for Windows
QuickTime

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner to your desktop.

• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Under Main choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

• Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.
• NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

• Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.
• NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Now Reboot(restart) your computer into Normal Mode.

Next:

Download Blacklight from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/security_center/
Under "Downloads", click on Blacklight and Save it to your Desktop
or
Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save it to your desktop from there.

Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:

"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert

Accept the license agreement.
Click > scan, wait for it to finish, then click Close

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

• Inform myself how your computer is running.
• Any problems encountered and or further symptoms at all ?
• Blacklight Log.
• A new HijackThis Log. <--In Normal Mode if able.

OK - now something is happening, for better or for worse. I'll give you the blow-by-blow, and try not to drown you in minutia...

I was unable to run Uninstall in Save Mode, so I rebooted to Normal Mode, and it actually worked, for the first time in a few days! I'm still getting continuous scvhoste.exe error, like the one I described in my original post. The numbers change each time. Close one error message out, and another pops up in its place. Eventually I just dragged it to the side of the screen and ingnored it. Task Manager CPU performance running at 4 to 8%. Still Vimax ads all over the place.

I uninstalled AdAware, iTunes, PC DOctor, and Quicktime.
I ran ATF Cleaner as directed.
I tried to reboot, but it stalled at the blue "Welcome to Windows" screen.
Cold boot #1- Froze once wallpaper and icons were up. Tray not yet full of the usual stuff. Hourglass mouse.
Cold boot #2 - Up and running. svchost.exe error messages started as I started IE. Otherwise OK. Downloaded and ran Blacklight. Here's the log:

When I went to post the results, and IE froze again. Had to restart the machine.
Restart - Froze at wallpaper.
Cold boot #3 - Same as cold boot #1
Cold boot #4 - Froze on opening IE. Total lock up.
Cold boot #5 - Same as #4.
Cold bood #6. Success! At least I didn't have to resort to Safe Mode...

But HJT started started stalling! Not sure how common this is.
The blue progress bar at the top of the window said, "O4 - registry and start menu autoruns", and if I clicked anywhere in the HJT window, I got the message, "This action cannot be competed because the other application is busy. Chose "Switch To" to activate the busy application and correct the problem." There are Switch To and Retry buttons, neither of which seem to do anything. I closed HJT via Task Manager, restarted it, and the same thing happened again.

Then IE froze before when I went to start writing this reply. Computer would not shut down thru the Start menu, so I was back to cold booting.

Three more boot attempts took me to the same place as Cold Boot #1, so now I'm back in Safe Mode. Sorry - I was so close to being able to supply a Normal Mode HJT log! But at least I was able to run HJT in Safe Mode. Results are below.

Are we having fun yet?

Certainly intriguing for myself but I suspect most exasperating for your good self though

Now this caught my eye in your last post scvhoste.exe <-- This is definitely how it is spelled and not svchost.exe ?

It still appears some of the applications I requested to be removed are present, this is not a admonishment however but more due to the present condition of your computer.

OK if you can confirm about my scvhoste.exe /svchost.exe query that would be helpful indeed.

Next:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.
• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
• Plus any further problems and or symtoms encountered.

Hey Dakeyras,

- The error message is indeed from scvhost.exe, NOT scvhoste.exe. My mistake.

- The removed apps: That's interesting. But they are definitely missing from both the Add and Delete Programs list and the HJT Uninstall log. Hmmm...

- SDFix log is below. That whole routine ran just fine.

- HJT locked up in exactly the same manner as before. It took IE down with it. I had to re-boot in Safe Mode to get it to run. The resulting log is posted below.

OK I will be both upfront and honest with your good self. Things are not looking good for your computer at all I'm afraid. A distinct possibility the Operating System is both compromised and or corrupted. Plus also the chance of some hardware related issues regarding one or more of the memory modules installed and a failing Hard-Drive.

Try not over worry just yet OK. I am merely informing yourself of a possible worst case scenario so it does not come as a complete shock. I am not going to throw the the towel in just yet however and will endeavor to the best of my abilities to try and get your computer stable again.

A question do you have a genuine XP installation CD-ROM and or can borrow one from a friend maybe if not ? As we may need to carry out a repair of the Operating System.

Next:

All of the below should work in Safe mode with network support.

Now I would like to check the current state of your computers Boot.ini file as follows:

• Open Notepad.
• Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <----Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK

Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Download and run MBR rootkit detector by GMER:

• Download mbr.exe from here and save it to your desktop
• Double-click mbr.exe to run the tool
• You will see the flash of a window, and then a log mbr.txt will be located on your desktop
• Post the contents of this log in your next reply

When completed the above, please post back the following:

• Any problems encountered and or further symptoms ?

This is getting more, umm, more interesting!

- no new symptoms. Still having touble booting up. I might freeze once or twice, but start up in Safe Mode. Vimax ads galore when ever a website has space for an ad. All of this was done in Safe Mode. CPU usage is down to a normal 4-8%. No scvhost.exe errors today, but I've only been in Save Mode. Still can't update McAfee.


- XP CD-ROM query: I have a set of System Recovery disks from Hewlett-Paclard that came with my coomputer. They are meant to be used for hard disk failures, etc, and contain the operating system and all the software that typically comes wit the machine. I used them not long after I got this machine (a few years ago) when I had the hard disk die.

Indeed! OK the good news is the results you posted are looking good So lets try and get your computer stable and then we will be able to address the malware problems.

We have a few options to try but I have decided upon the following first as it is slightly more user friendly.

I do have one question though, have you tried the option Last Known Good Configuration at all when going through the procedure to boot up into Safe mode with network support. If you haven't try this first before carrying out the below, if you have just skip this and proceed with my instructions below please.

It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions:

I am going to ask you to carry out a basic repair operation to your computers Operating System. We will need the Windows XP CD for this.

This will not affect your currently installed software, documents and files.

Startup/reboot your computer into Safe mode with network support.

Create a backup of the current boot.ini file as follows:

Click on Start >> Run... then copy/paste the following command:

cmd /c echo f|xcopy C:\boot.ini c:\boot.bak /h

Then click on OK

Note: The above is a important step that needs to be done before commencing with any of the below!

Next:

• Place your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM and Reboot your computer
• XP's setup program will automatically start and files will be loaded to memory
• When you reach the Welcome to Setup screen choose the Repair option by pressing R
• This will start the Recovery console and the list of Windows installations will appear
• As you only have one installation on your computer you need to press the number which is relevant to your installations location. This, obviously will typically be 1
• Type in your Administrator password. If you are using Windows XP Home edition the administrator password is blank by default so simply press Enter
• Now type in the following exactly chkdsk /p and hit the enter/return key.
• After the command typed in has completed its task, remove your XP CD from the CD-ROM and then type Exit
• Reboot your machine as normal.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

• How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered ?
• A new HijackThis Log. <--- Only post this if able to boot up into Normal Mode.

Well, that was exciting!

As I mentioned, I don't have a standand Windows XP CD, just a set of System Recovery disks from Hewlett-Packard. So I ran that in "Standard Recovery" mode, which theoretically recovers the OS and any software that is supplied with the computer, but leaves any personal data files alone. It doesn not re-install software added since the machine was new. It does NOT totally re-format the drive. It essentially re-installs Windows. Bottomline: I couldn't do exactly what you asked, but I tried to come as close as I could...

Here's what happened:

Before doing the recovery, it suggested running a diagnostic, so I did that. PC Doctor 5 started up, and I ran their Basic, Hard Drive, Optical Drive, and CPU/Memory tests. Each came back with the messge, "no failed devices". I guess that's a good thing.

The System Recovery seemed to run okay - no glitches or errors. The usual one million re-boots. It seemed to work as advertised. Windows was up and running normally, and all the original software that came with the computer was there. My personal files were stashed in the Documents and Settings folder.

After I got to the end of the installation process, I plugged my cable modem back in and went online. First thing I did was to update Windows. There were something like 118 updates to install, but now at least Windows is up to date.

Norton Anti-Virus was installed, so I updated that. I ran a Norton AV scan, and it came back with nothing.

I downloaded HTJ, and the log is posted below.

To my untrained eyes, the system appears stable. The symptoms from my original post are gone:
- I was able to update Norton. I have not yet tried McAfee, Spybot, or any other protection programs that I had been using but were being blocked.
- Task Manager CPU usage shows between 0 and 1% with no major apps running.
- No computer slow-downs or freezes.
- Boot-up is normal.
- No IE hijacks
- Vimax ads are gone.
