Google Redirecter

Unread postby gmj1234 » February 26th, 2009, 7:19 pm

Hi,

I'm having big problem with a google redirector. Manually typing in addresses in the address bar is fine but half the time I try and access webpages via google I get redirected. The most common page I tend to get sent to is someting like "clickfraudmanager.com" and there is some mention of this on other forums about a possible trojan

I've tried a range of removal tools (ad aware, spybot, AVG etc) but it's really persistent. If anyone could help I'd be really grateful!

My Hijack this log is below:

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Vuze

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

------------------------

AntiVirus
You have several AV's running, ,AVG7, McAfee, Norton,AVG8, you're actually doing more harm than good by running more than one Anti Virus program.
When you do this the programs compete for resources, and the end result is none does it's best and can cause system instability.
I recommend that you choose one that you want to keep.
The other/s I would either uninstall, or disable from startup and use as "on demand" for an occasional scan.

Please note that almost all "free" security software is only free for home/private users

Did you set these desktop components?

Are you running through a proxy server?
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = ftp=wwwcache.cam.ac.uk:8080;gopher=wwwcache.cam.ac.uk:8080;http=wwwcache.cam.ac.uk:8080
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *ac.uk;<local>

Is this a buisness pc or private pc?

Post a fresh HJT log
Thanks dan

Hi Dan,

Have unistalled Vuze and the excess AV software. The desktop components are mine.

This computer is a private computer that was up untill recently on a University network, running through their proxy server. I had to switch to a wireless connection outside the network when I moved house but the room (and this computer) will be reconnected to the same network in a few days.

Here is the new HJK log:

Which antivirus program have you decided to stay with as I'm seeing leftovers from programs I outlined to you.
Looks like your Norton is active,Just let me know please.

I unistalled AVG, Spybot - Search & Destroy, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and Malwarebytes hoping to revert back to just McAfee VirusScan Enterprise.

I've never used Norton, it came pre-loaded and I thought I'd uninstalled it a long time ago although this is obviously not the case. I'm unsure as to how to remove any remaining components.

There wasn't any need to take off malwarebytes or spybot. We would be using malwarebytes later anyway.
It's a good program and worth keeping imho.

I need to know regarding avg8, are you telling me that your present antivirus program is mcafee?
Norton is still active on this machine. Once we get this cleared up we can move on.

Yes, mcafee is my present AV progam. I used AVG 8 for a while but reverted back to AVG 7.5 after reading some negative comments about it although, again, I thought I had removed them both.

Apologies for all the confusion. I initially tried to sort this out by trying a large number of different programs, I should have just come for help straight away!

Let's deal with Norton first

Remove Norton

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool

Start > Run, type appwiz.cpl and click OK.

Uninstall the following:

AVG8

Now close Control Panel.

-----------------

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Your log shows that MSConfig is running at startup. This indicates that you may be using "diagnostic startup" rather than "normal startup" to stop something from running. While this is normally OK, it is possible that you have disabled something that will affect how we fix your malware problem. While disabled, it will not show up in the HijackThis log.

Go to Start > Run and type Notepad
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.
Code: Select all
regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "mslook.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

Clear Java cache
Let's clear that java cache
  • Press Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Click Java
  • Under Temporary Internet Files click Settings...
  • Now click Delete files...
  • Select both options and click OK
  • The temporary files will now be deleted.
  • When done click OK twice and close Control Panel

Can you let me know how things are running with the machine now!

Thanks for all the help so far. I thought it was ok, the problem is really intermittent so I wanted to give it a day or so to raise it's ugly head and it's still going on! I got redirected from a google link about 2 minutes ago to couponmountain.co.uk.
