Windows XP Browser redirect (FF and IE) and av no-update

Greetings.

I have recently been experiencing symptoms on my XP machine similar to those in this post: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=40360 My browser redirects to unrelated sites after clicking on search engine results, gives popups at random times, and also my antivirus will not update (i have tried both AVG, and Kaspersky 2009 (not both at the same time.) )

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could take the time to look at my log and possibly give suggestions. The antivirus picked up nothing related.

edit - do not worry about the shopandscan.com link it is part of a legitimate shopping panel to which i have been registered for years.
edit 2 - I forgot to mention. I cannot boot into safe mode either. I used a program called bootsafe.exe to get aroud this problem.

If your issues have been resolved or already received help elsewhere, then please let us know. If not, and still need help. Please follow the instructions in the following.
In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer. Please rescan your computer and post a new HJT log and an Uninstall List.

Make an Uninstall List

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
5. Click on the Save list button
6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default, it's named uninstall_list.txt.
7. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply and a fresh HJT log.

In your next reply, please post back:

Unfortunately I have a slight problem: upon clicking the 'save list' button hijackthis terminates without saving the log.

I am currently running a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan and will inform you of the results when it is finished.
I shall also uninstall HiJackThis and reinstall with a fresh version (as this one has been installed for a long time now)

Something I failed to mention in my previous post:
Kaspersky (with its outdated virus databank) did pick up and quarantine one Trojan

Trojan program Heur.Trojan.Generic C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGvwWqN.dll

I will respond later today with any MAlwarebytes findings, a new HJT log and (hopefully) an uninstall list.

edit - It just occurred to me also that I can use another pc int he house to manually download the lastest kaspersky updates and move to the infected machine via pen drive.
I shall do this and run another full scan.

Ok davis,
Thank you once again but I seem to have sorted my own problem using the following method:

Ran malwarebytes to detect and remove many 'vundo.trojan' files
Used another pc to download an update for my antivirus and manually installed the update. Kaspersky Managed to remove some more registry entries.

Upon next scan there was only one file remaining relating to the virus, as I didn't know the process name which it ran under, I instead booted into linux using a live-cd distribution and used this to access my drive and removed the file.

Upon reboot the scans showed no unusual activity and the antivirus update connected fine. Also my DNS no longer redirects.

I am sorry as I feel I have wasted your time here, but I am grateful of your support and will look to the MRU for future assistance if required.
