Constant Popups Annoying

Unread postby TheFrigginFalcon » February 16th, 2009, 11:08 pm

First, a brief general note. As distressing as it is to realize how many malware creators are out there frustrating us for profit or some sick sort of "fun," it is equally heartening to see this group helping the victims get things working again. Thanks!

On to my particular woes . . .

I have an infection that seems to manifest itself through pop-ups whenever I run a search engine. Right after I restart, I can run Internet Explorer and various other programs, but as long as I do not visit any search site, all seems to be well. Computer runs fine with no pop-ups. But as soon as I actually run a search (say, on Google or Yahoo), I get overwhelmed with pop-ups -- often two or three of them for every page that I load intentionally.

If I then navigate away from the search engine, I still get pop-ups, but much less frequently, until I restart. I have Spy Sweeper running, and it periodically detects attempts to load sites known to be related to SpyWare (many are just IP addresses, but the infamous "Registry Defender" is a frequent entry). On its daily scans, it always picks up "Virtumonde," in addition to the usual litanty of normally benign cookies. Of course I quarantine all of these, but they return as soon as I restart IE.

In addition to AVG always running, I run Malwarebyte's "Anti-Malware" periodically, and the trace that it always seems to find is "msjuan" -- usually two instances of it I also notice in pop-up pages, before the pop-up address appears, there are URL's that include the word "superjuan." Of course I also quarantine these infections, but that only lasts until I restart or run IE again.

I also had the "vundo" malware about a year ago, and I believe I removed that successfully, but admittedly without expert help of the sort available here. Some chance that could still be lurking, although the current symptoms are nothing like what happened a year ago. It was that painful experience that inspired me to load up with various protective measures, but evidently something has sneaked past.

So with that summary, I will post my HJT log below and ask for any help you may be able to provide. Thanks!

Hi TheFrigginFalcon,

Step1

Regarding to Malware Removal's P2P Programs Policy, please uninstall the following program before we continue:

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Locate eMule and click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.
  3. Close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel when done.

Step2

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

In your next reply, please post back:

1.RSIT log.txt and info.txt. Thanks.

Thanks for your help!

1. e-mule uninstalled as instructed

2. Default for RSIT was "within last month," so that's how I ran it.

Here is the info.txt file:

Re: Constant Popups Annoying

Unread postby TheFrigginFalcon » February 24th, 2009, 10:05 am

One additional bit of data. The most prevalent pop-up by far is from this URL:

http://82.98.235.111/dot.gif/?ver=89&cmp=meta_mg

and it always displays this message, or some minor variant of it:

"Warning: include(get_tid.php) [function.include]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /usr/local/www/data-dist/trafc-2/advdb/cmps.php on line 34

Warning: include() [function.include]: Failed opening 'get_tid.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/local/share/pear') in /usr/local/www/data-dist/trafc-2/advdb/cmps.php on line 34

Fatal error: Class 'MyGeekFeed' not found in /usr/local/www/data-dist/trafc-2/advdb/cmps.php on line 44"

The other pop-ups seem to occur ONLY when I am using a search engine, and although they are not very good at it, they seem to be trying to present sites related to whatever search I am doing.

The one above pops up constantly, whether I am searching or loading a page or not, and even if I have IE closed. It is making it virtually impossible for me to use the Internet for any purpose. Very much appreciate any help you can provide in eradicating it.

Hi TheFrigginFalcon,

Step1

We need temporarily disabe Spyweeper real time protection or it may interfere.

  1. Right click on Spysweeper icon near the clock and select Shields.
  2. Click on the Web Browser tab. Uncheck all the boxes there.
  3. Click on the Network tab. Uncheck all the boxes there.
  4. Click on the Windows System tab. Uncheck all the boxes there.
  5. Click on the Startup tab. Uncheck Startup items box.
  6. Click on the Email Attachments tab. Uncheck Email Attachments* box.
  7. Right click on Spysweeper icon and select Shutdown.
  8. Note:you can re-enable it after your system is clean.

Step2

If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Note: CombFix has recently been updated to include the option for installing the Recovery Console automatically. You will see the below prompt when you first run ComboFix:

Image

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once Recovery Console is installed, you should see a blue screen prompt like the one below:

Image

1.Close/disable all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

2.Click Yes to allow Combofix to continue scanning for malware.

When done, a log will be produced (or locate it in C:\ComboFix.txt). Please post that log in your next reply.

Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next reply, please post back:

1.Combofix log
2.New RIST log Thanks.

OK, all done as suggested.

One side note -- on the "bleepingcomputer" link, right at the top of the page, there is a "Download" button that does not download Combofix, but some trial version of some entirely different software. I was halfway through installing it before I realized it wasn't Combofix. Anyway, I canceled that and eventually got Combofix installed.

Here's the log file:

FWIW, I have done some web surfing since the above procedures were completed, including some Google searches, and so far have not had any more pop-ups. I realized that complete recovery may require additional actions, but it looks like something good has happened!

Thanks!

Hi TheFrigginFalcon,

I notice you had some McAfee leftovers and your AVG antivrius was an outdated version. You're well adivsed to remove them completely and reinstall a new one.

Please go to Here to download Mcafee uninstaller to clean the leftovers and go to Here to download AVG Remover utility which removes all parts of AVG installation on your computer, including registry items, installation and user files on your disk, etc.

Before proceeding the uninstallation process, you should download a free one from the following threads. After that, please disable internet access, uninstall AVG7 and reinstall a new one. Remeber to update your virus definitions afterwards.

AVG Free 8.0 for Windows
avast! 4 Home Edition
AntiVir Free Edition

Step1

  1. Close any open browsers
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Go to Here for your reference.
  3. Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text inside the code box below:
Code: Select all
File::
c:\windows\Tasks\Antispyware Scheduled Scan.job
Folder::
c:\program files\eMule
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop

Image

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt". Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Step2

Older versions Java have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) the following Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step3

Let's clean some temp files. Please do the following:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step4

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner.

  1. Please go to Kaspersky Online Scanner and perform an online antivirus scan.
  2. Click Accept button on the "Requirements and limitations".
  3. When Java warning " The applcation digital signature has been verified. Do you want to run the application " appears, Click on "Run" button.
  4. It will be Downloading and installing the program and Updating the database.
  5. When Updating the database have finished, click on Settings.
  6. Make sure all boxes are checked. then click on the Save button.
  7. Click on My Computer under Scan menu. It will start scanning, so be patient and let it run.
  8. Once the scan is completed, Click on View Scan Report.
  9. You may see a list of infected items over there. Click on Save Report As.
  10. Click "Desktop" , Name the file as "KAS", Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) and Click on Save button.
  11. Please post the contents in your next reply.
  12. You can refer to this animation

Please post back the logs in your next reply.

1.Combofix log
2.KAS Scan Report
3.Fresh HJT log

Tell me how your pc is behaving now.

Yes, I am still with you. I was (gasp!) away from my computer for 3 days, and just got back tonight.

I am up to Step #4 (Kaspersky), but it looks like that will be scanning well past my bedtime. Since going through the previous set of steps, I have seen no obvious evidence of any infection, but Kaspersky has found 1 infected file amongst the first 8,000 or so that it has scanned, so something may still be amiss.

Assuming the scan has completed when I get up tomorrow, I will try to finish Step #4 and post the requested items before heading off to work.

Thanks for all your help!
