I've been infected with a really nasty piece of work that has done the following damage:
- removed McAfee VirusScan from my McAfee SecurityCentre
- switched off my McAfee and Windows firewall
- prevents me from doing a system restore
- shuts down my FireFox app every time I tried to search for McAfee
I have since recovered the computer to some form of normality by:
- killing any obviously suspicious Processes
- installing and running a few Spyware/Adware apps (CCleaner & SUPERAntiSpyware) and then
- restoring to a previous date before start of infection
- then installing missing McAfee features (VirusScan) and scanning
- Full Scan using Windows Defener (after getting updates)
- Installed SpyBot: scan removed more Spyware/Adware
The system now seems to be alot healthier and has no problem searching for McAfee...
**** BUT here's where I noticed that I'm still infected.....*****
Before I started to use the laptop for internet banking etc I tested by googling for a few bank sites and have noticed that in some cases it has redirected me to to other sites that definitely not the official bank sites.
These are a list of the banks I've noticed that are impacted:
- "Bank of America" - from google clicking on the 'Online Banking' link (sub-link in the first result google returns)
- "HBOS" - from google clicking on 'Banking Services' link (sub-link on third result)
I've tried the links on another computer and they work fine.
I would appreciate your help with this. HijackThis output is below....
NOTE: I have System restore switched on, not sure if this is prolonging the problem but am afraid to switch it off incase things get really bad and I've no way to recover.
