That post (for a different infection) has details of how to install KAV along with an existing AV.

those files - AVG7 went wild when I tried to open them - If I need to do some infecting of my own system I will need to use my test machine - no AV !!

So as well as KAV you could try the free version of AVG7 from http://www.grisoft.com

That two should be able to assist in this virus's removal.

If you have the time, I would like you to try AVG7 first.

I do have and have run KAV. Further, I am waiting for a license number to activate AVG. I downloaded the trial version, but I cannot complete installation without the license number.

Not the trial version of AVG7 - is a FREE version - its the same program but without the bells and whistles. - look for the free version at that site.

Alright. I have installed and run AVG7, and it found and deleted one file. However, I still have had to delete about 150 .exe files in WINNT and WINNT\system32, which were not present when I went home last night.

Also, I might have failed to mention that I have Zone Labs Alarm. However, since all of this started, I cannot execute the program. It tells me that vsmon.dll could not be found. I have even tried to reinstall it without success. Therefore, no firewall.

I will look forward to hearing from you with any further guidance, as my problems persist.

I have those files and I will try to infect myself tomorrow - run out of time today.

===================

So - tools you have so far that we will try to use this time.

CWshredder
SpSeHjfix
Killbox
AVG7
KAV (If not could you download and install like in that post by Jane for the Bube infection, which you do not have BTW).

also copy this regfix. Thanks to Lonny (another expert)

Open notepad, copy ALL of that code box to the notepad and save as ALL FILES to the desktop with the name spywad-remove.reg

From this point on - do not have any access to the internet and do not open internet explorer until finished.

Now boot into safe mode and at each of the boot to follow go into safe mode. Some of these programs may get you to reboot if so reboot back to safe mode, try not to get to normal mode untill finished.

Run HJT to get a list of all the files with 3 chars names. - by now you know which are the good ones in your log, all the rest are bad.

run CWShredder - 'fix' not scan.

Run AVG7

Run KAV

Use HJT to fix all those lines.

Double click that spywad-remove.reg - when it asks confirm the merge to the regestry.

Use killbox on all those files.

Reboot to safe mode

Do a HJT log - see if they are gone.

If not repeat again for a second time.

====

Post back with a fresh HJT log then for me to see. - Good or bad.

Looks good doesn't it. However, I will not know if we have been successful until my computer has been running for a while. Also, for some reason, my computer is running terribly slow.

If you have any further info, please send. If not, I will get back to you with any new developments.

Hello jbhlaw,

Chris has asked me to continue on helping you.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", Now click the "Config" button, select "Misc Tools", click the "Delete an NT Service" button and paste "TBPSSvc" (without the quotes) into the white box and click "Ok".

Next...click the "Back" button and then check(tick) the following, if present:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

O23 - Service: WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Delete this folder in red:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar

Reboot your computer.

Post back a new log, report any problems and let me know how everything goes.

IMPORTANT! PLEASE do not restart your computer unless asked, restarting can reinfect your computer resulting in us starting the cleaning up process all over!

Just tried to follow the instructions. However, HJT would not let me Delete an NT Service by entering TBPSSvs. It stated that it was enabled or in use. It also suggested that I disable it using HJT. That did not work either.

So, I rebooted in safe mode. Attempted the same thing and got the same result. I was able to "fix" the 09 lines. As you are aware, I have attempted on several occasions to "fix" the 023 Websearch line without success. It always reappears.

I will wait for further instructions. By the way, glad to have you back. The other guys are great, but this problem is ours to finish.

then do the following.

in safe mode

start - Run - services.msc /s (enter)

look down the list that shows till you find your bad one - take care to get the right one.

double click the entry

use 'stop', change teh startup type to disable, then OK to exit.

Then reboot try HJT again to remove that line (it may not now be there, and try to delete that file too with windows explorer.

Post back with a new HJT log and info on how you get on.

I am curious as to why I still cannot run Zone Alarm. It shows the vsmon.exe on the last line of the log. However, I still cannot run the program because it says "vsmon.exe could not be found."

REGARDLESS, WE ARE GETTING SOMEWHERE!!!

Can I assume that this is not your pefered home page.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.bodog.com/

If so fix that line in HJT.

I can't now see any bad lines left. Re zonealarm I think you should uninsall that and reinstall to see it that cures the problem - or just reinstall over the top if uninstall does not work.

http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html has a better (but harder to learn) firewall that you might like - is also others listed in our public library in the computer safety online topic.

If you fix that home page you should set one now with IE to the site you would like as a home page. IE Tools, internet options, use current works when at the site you wish to use.

After doing all that please explain what problems you now have left. Along with a new HJT log please.

At this point, I believe my malware problems are solved. The remaining issues include my calendar not being accessible from other computers. However, that is an application problem. It has now been a couple of days without incident, so I will consider this post concluded.

I certainly appreciate all of your help, and hopefully will not need your assistance in the future. However, I am glad to know you guys are here.

Come back if you have problems - here is my standard all clean post:-

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

May your God go with you..
