Hi All!

I have a Sony laptop, VGN-FS760W, running Windows XP. I've upgraded the RAM to 2GB, and recently upgraded the hard drive to 250MB.

The problem is that the computer has become very slow. Any Internet activity, using either IE 6.0.290 or Firefox 3.0.6, will hang after about 8-12 minutes of activity. Once it hangs, it will usually recover if I wait another 8 minutes or so.

While the browser is hung, I can still ping sites by URL, and they do respond quickly.

The problem seems to be worse with a wireless connection, but also does happen with a wired connection. I have tried three different wireless routers, and each one behaves the same, so I'm pretty sure that the router hardware is not the source of the problem.

When I close either IE or Firefox, an instance of the iexplore.exe or firefox.exe process is usually left running. If so, it must be manually killed. Sometimes the process will not die, and restart is necessary.

When I try to restart or shutdown, it usually takes a very long time to do so. Often I must simply power off without properly shutting down.

When I restart, Safe Mode w/Networking will usually be better, and sometimes I can restart into normal Windows mode. Other times I have to start with "Last Known Good." There seems to be no pattern as to which startup mode works best, though Safe Mode is usually the one that will work better.

I'm running Windows Defender, and Avast! antivirus, and Spybot S&D.

I am no longer using Verizon FIOS, nor any Symantec product, though I notice some entries from both in this log.

One other problem, possibly unrelated but definitely annoying, is that my cursor is moved from time to time. It acts as if I have pressed the left mouse button, which then moves the cursor to another place on the screen. No other keystrokes nor any evidence of "remote control" has been noticed.

I have replaced some of the URLs in the HiJackThis log, due to privacy issues. The ones replaced are related to my work, and are trusted sites. The actual URLs have been replaced with "redacted", so there will be a number of entries with the URL "redacted.com" If the actual URL is needed to diagnose the problem, I would prefer to PM the log, so that those URLs are not made public here.

Sorry, just a teeny bit paranoid!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here's my HiJackThis log:

Hi melissa_may1

Is this computer owned by you, or by your company?
And is it for personal use or for business use?
This may affect the fix procedure.

I would like to add that, though I understand your situation, it's not advisable to run in safe mode with networking as a lot of protection software is disabled which leaves you open and vulnerable.

If it really is that bad to an extent that it's not possible to operate in normal mode, I suggest you burn yourself a Linux live cd, so that you will be able to use the PC while being in minimal danger.

Post next the answers to my questions and tell me whether you ran any self fixes. Some things look incompletely removed.

Hi:

Thanks for the reply, and the sympathy!

Q: Is this computer owned by you, or by your company?

A: Well, it's technically owned by the company, but I own the company!
So either way, it's mine.

Q: And is it for personal use or for business use?

A: I use the computer primarily for business. But it's a laptop, so I end up using it for everything.

Q: ...tell me whether you ran any self fixes. Some things look incompletely removed.

I've run a number of malware scanners, but none found anything important. I recently (maybe 2 months?) uninstalled Norton Internet Security, but it did not appear to have been completely un-installed. So, I did go through a procedure suggested by Symantec, to try to remove it all. The procedure consisted of deleting some Symantec files and folders, and searching and removing any relevant keys from the registry.

This problem has been ongoing for about 3 months, so during the period I have tried a few fixes, but nothing I'd say was drastic.

In December I purchased a new hard drive, and copied (imaged) the old drive onto the new. So, I do have a relatively recent full copy of the system. I've since bought another new drive, so that I could use it to install the Sony recovery disks that came with the laptop. I've also got a backup of important files on a separate USB hard drive, as well as some DVDs of important files.

While I would prefer to use the current drive, and clean it up so that I'm back in good condition (in order to eliminate any possibility of losing files), it would be possible to re-image my original drive and work from that (minimizing the loss of files), or to use the new drive with the recovery disks installed (completely losing files).

NOTE: When I say "losing files" here, I know I won't actually "lose" them, since I do have backups. However, it would take a lot of work to track down the latest versions of files that I regularly use, and nearly impossible to re-install all of my applications.

Thanks for the advice on Linux Live CD. However, I'm not clear on how that would help. All of my documents and files are on Win XP, as are the software programs I use (Office 2003, Firefox, Thunderbird, Dreamweaver, etc.) I don't see how running Linux would help me there.

My goal is to clean this computer sufficiently so that it can be used again.

Thanks again for your reply. I look forward to working with you on getting this thing back in shape!

;)

I will elaborate on Linux. Linux can run from a CD without needing to be installed. So you can browse the internet and do some other limited work from the Linux environment without being affected by the malware on your Windows environment. Depending on which distribution you choose, you may be able to access the files on your Windows partition from within the Linux environment (as an example - I know Ubuntu allows this).

Unfortunately, I am afraid I cannot help you any further with this as you have acknowledged this computer to be used for business purposes.

We cannot help remove malware from any business related computer. Such systems may have specific modifications made which might hinder our tools, or worse, be removed by them. Also, if the computer is infected, there's a chance other computers it has been networked with (as is the case in many businesses) have been infected as well.

We do not wish to be responsible for ANY losses a business may suffer from use of our services.

An extract taken from our rules:
In General, we do not help in cleaning business or corporate computers. There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware. There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that we do not wish to deal with.
If you ask for help and, unknown to us, it involves a business computer, you need to understand that any damages resulting from our advice are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Because of the above reasons, it is suggested that you take this issue to your IT department instead. If your business does not have one, take this computer to a qualified professional, or take any other actions you deem to be appropriate.

Please let me know you have read this so that the topic can be closed. I am sorry I could not have been of further assistance.

Hi:

Thanks for your reply.

I'm sorry, but it seems like there's a misunderstanding.

Mine is not a "business" or "corporate" computer. There is no "IT department." There is no "network."

There are no restrictions nor modifications installed on this machine that could be damaged or altered by any action taken to remove malware.

There are no legal issues regarding loss of business data, because this drive is a copy of the original drive, and there are other backups of the data.

I understand that any damages resulting from your advice are MY RESPONSIBILITY.

Therefore, please do not close out this thread, and please assist me in getting this computer back working.

Thanks,

Melissa

Yes, there must be a misunderstanding.

You said -
I use the computer primarily for business.
- from this I understand the computer is being used for business purposes. Therefore, it is a business computer, which means I am not permitted to clean it.

No, I meant I misunderstood!

It happens that I own more than one of this model. I thought I was having problems with the one I use for work.

I double-checked the computer, and the one with the problems is one that I use strictly for personal use.

So, to be clear, the one I'm asking about is for personal use only, and is not used for business.

I have also expressly stated that I will not hold you, this website, nor anyone connected with this website liable for any damage or loss of information.

So, let me answer your original questions:

Q: Is the computer used for business?

A: No.

Q: Is the computer owned by a business?

A: No.

Sorry that I misunderstood, and incorrectly answered your original questions.

May we now proceed?

Hi melissa-may,

It's the policy of this forum that we do not work on business computers. This has already been pointed out to you by Odd dude.

You were quite happy to declare your computer was a company machine until you knew this, when all of a sudden you had a change of mind.

I'm sorry, but in view of your earlier comments, there is no way for us to truly establish whether this is a company machine or not, and so I'm afraid we must decline to help you any further.

This matter is not open to debate.
