explorer.exe problem

Unread postby redcap04 » February 16th, 2009, 2:47 am

I explorer.exe won't run at startup nor can i manually run it so i currently cant see the lower pane and my desktop. I also can't run system restore saying a message "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart and run system restore again." but after doing so just repeats the error message. I also recently removed the registry from DrWatson Postmortem Debugger after causing several problems running most files but i'd like to delete the remnants as well. Ive done virus scans but it just keeps leaving 20+ viruses from my temporary internet files. I can't run control panel either. Running in safe mode also doesnt show my start tab or my desktop. I've just had this new PC for a month or two @_@. HJT Log Posted.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Without explorer.exe how did you run HJthis ?

I see you have been here before and used a bittorent program. I hope your not using it again.
Most infections we see the infected machine has a peer 2 peer program on it.

Bad news.

It looks like you have been infected by a backdoor trojan. This is about as bad as it gets.

This allows hackers to remotely access your computer, passwords, account numbers, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files without you ever knowing it.

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, , it could never be considered to be truly clean, or trustworthy. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be wise to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall. Personally this would be my ONLY option if it were my machine.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found
here

I do suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I run everything through ctrl+alt+del then new task, its like hell @_@. This is a new pc i've only had for a few months. IF it helps ndisio.sys seems to be one of the main causes. Luckily i don't keep any bank accounts etc on this pc. If this gets resolved can i still login through my email accounts AFTER changing them in a new pc? BTW this is a new HJT

Alright I guess regardless of what I explained you still want to try and clean this machine. Your call.
I will do my best but there's no grantee at all you won't be infected again in a short time. Or that this will work at all.

ndisio.sys "Depending on it's location" Right there is an example . I didn't know yet that this file existed on your computer. But it is also another backdoor trojan giving someone else access to your computer..

You need to go to add/remove programs and remove ANY peer to peer programs you have.
Most infected computers we see have 1 or more of these programs and we have a stead fast rule.
You may read about it here.

Download and Run ComboFix
Please visit this web page for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

You may have to transfer if from a clean machine via flash drive to get it to run.
Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. For information on how to disable your anti virus program please see this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Place it on the desk top then start the task manager and copy this in

Code: Select all
"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe"

If you can't get it to the desktop leave it on the flash drive and do this:

Start the task manager / click applications tab
start a new process.
type this in :

Code: Select all
x:/combofix.exe

( where x is the corresponding letter to the flash drive.

When it's done it shall produce a log for you.
POST that for me.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
