Infected with SpyAxe

Unread postby gspederson » December 17th, 2005, 12:05 pm

Hi, I'm new to this community so please feel free to let me know if I do something wrong while utilizing this site.

Your help is greatly appreciated and whatever I can do to repay my debt please let me know

I have a machine that is infected with SpyAxe 3.0. I get a pop up on the bottom right of the screen, from the tool box area warning that my machine is infected and SpyAxe 3.0 loads itself and my IE auto launches and goes to http://www.yoursystemupdate.com/ then a pop up comes up trying to get me to click OK to supposedly fix my problem.
Lavasoft Adware, Spybot S&D and/or Microsoft Antispyware are unable to deal with this issue.
For antirus I have AVG, AntiVir and Symantec Corporate edition.
The only firewall on this machine is the XP wall. I have Zonelabs Pro to install on this machine after I resolve this issue.
Thanks,
Greg

You state you have three AV products - three does not make for three times as secure - with AV's any more than one makes for lots of problems as they will argue.

Re spyaxe.

follow the post from this blog of Nick's (one of our teachers) and post back with a fresh HJT log after please.

Hi I followed the procedure and seem to be rid of SpAxe now, however the full Ewido scan failed to complete on 4 attempts. I'd get popups to remove Hotbar and then the program would crash. I was able to run the smart scan and it did fix 2 problems. Adaware also found and repaired some things as well.

Re AV
If more than one program is an issue what would be your recommendation?

Thank you for the help, it is very much appreciated.

That was good :~) - that instruction set of Nick's is very helpful.

If you wish to tank anyone - try http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/ noahsfear write that program that did most of the work to get you clean.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - Startup: Launch Internet Explorer Browser.lnk = C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe[/B]

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

These are just a tidyup - not infections as such - the first is an orhpaned entry - the second was added by a malware to make IE open when you booted, which was to make sure one of the infection methods within IE got active each time you started your machine - not an infection of its own.

Re the AV's - pick one that you have an update subcription for and remove the others. Uninstall that is. Which one you pick is not an issue, although Norton and McAfee are bloated software in my mind. I have to be careful in saying that, some people sware by Norton or McAfee others sware at them, I fall into the later camp. I use a paid copy from AVG.

Re Ewedo, did you try running in safe mode.

Post back with that updated HJT log please - and tell me how the machine is behaving.
