Google links redirected when using IE and Mozilla

Hi,

When I do a search using Google (even Yahoo) on IE or Mozilla, the links are redirected; they do not correspond to the search results.

• Start HijackThis
• Click on the Misc Tools button
• Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

Download and run Combofix

ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

• Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
• Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
• As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.


Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:


Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

• Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")

  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:

Please make sure that all programs are closed when installing Java.

1. Click here to visit Java's website.
   
2. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
   
3. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
   
4. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
   
5. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
   
6. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
   
7. Double click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.
   
8. After the Java installation has finished, please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
   
9. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
   
10. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    
11. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    
12. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    Archives
    Mail databases
13. Click on My Computer under Scan.
    
14. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    
15. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    
16. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Hi Dan,

I have tested searching using Google on IE and, although many of the answer links were correctly displaying and were taking me to the correct sites, some of them changed in the URL bar and displayed messages informing me that malware has been detected and offering to scan my computer; the only way to get rid of them was to close the browser.

Also, strange things happened as well: the computer locked itself last night and, while unlocking it, the GUI did not display correctly. I tried opening Safari and a message displayed something like this: "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested services." I have rebooted and now things seem a little better.

And yes, the Infostrength domain is mine - my work domain, and I would not want to get rid of it .

Please go to Eset website to perform an online scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

1. Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
   
2. Click on the Start button next to it.
   
3. When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.
   
4. You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.
   
5. Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.

Before getting your last reply I had run Ad-Aware and it found three dubious objects. After deleting the cookies and the Internet temporary files, I ran ESET Online Scanner, as you have recommended.

Hi, Loredana,
just have adaware fix items found,it's just doing it's job they are nothing to worry about.
Scan came back clean. Can you let me know how things are with the machine and then we can cleanup the tools I used.

Everything seems normal again.

I had tested searching using Google and Yahoo on both IE and Firefox browsers and the result links were correctly displaying and by clicking them I was taken to the correct pages.

CLEAN UP
Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

• Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  
• Click the CleanUp! button.
  
• Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  
• If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  
• The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  

post a fresh HJT and let me know when you have carried out above.
