I appreciate the explanation and am waiting patiently for Kaspersky to finish. It is still a ways off yet.
I like your idea of saving even a bad restore point rather than having no restore points. I was thinking ahead near the end you would have me turn off system restore and then back on and I think in the process wiping out all restore points. I like having something to fall back on if a problem arises.
Kaspersky will probably finish after you have signed off for the night so if I don't get it to you soon, I'll be back tomorrow if you are available.

Here are the contents of the Kaspersky scan. I thought it would pickup on the Vundo in the restore points that were identified in the Malwarebyte program. Anyway Kaspersky did id some things that were not previously picked up.

Download and Run OTMoveIt3
Download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Opera\Opera\mail\store\account1\2002\05\30\14771.mbs
    C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Opera\Opera\mail\store\account1\2002\06\27\16287.mbs
    C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Opera\Opera\mail\store\account1\2001\05\23\22347.mbs
    C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Opera\Opera\mail\store\account1\2001\06\05\23848.mbs

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • If you are not asked to reboot close OTMoveIt3.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).

post otmoveit report and a fresh HJTlog.
Let me know how things are running. :)

Hi Dan,
The OTMoveIt3 and HJT logs follow. Thing started running pretty good after you had me run ComboFix. Trojan.Vundo.H was picked up by MalwareByte and other progams and was cleaned somewhat but after booting parts would just reinstall and replicate. I could see this by looking at HJT before and after the reboot. I really needed a program like ComboFix as it caught the Vundo during the reboot(I think). I want to do more research on the programs you had me run, especially the ComboFix now that I can easily browse again as the computer seems to be acting normally. I wasn't about to use the ComboFix program without supervision though.
I know we are not done yet as I'm sure there are cleanup and final tweaks to make sure this is completely handled. I think the 4 items in my Opera mailbox databases(mbx files) that we moved by OTMoveIt3 were dormant but a potential problem if opened. The Vundo is new on the scene I think and I got it by going against my better judgment and downloading an ISO file that was infected and subsequently installing it. My problems showed up on the first startup after installing the program from the ISO file even though it had been a few days as I didn't turn my computer off right away.
BTW my wife's computer is running much faster but there may be some crap still in there. I can't thank you enough for getting me this far even though we are not done yet. I appreciate you volunteering your time to help so many others in addition to myself.

Hi, John, thanks for returned logs,I'm presently working but due off soon, when home I will look over your HJT log as we need to tidy the tools I used, apart from malwarebytes which is a good program to keep, you just need to update it before running scans.
The problem with vundo as you rightly sumised is if you don't get to it all it will mutate.
Combofix isn't really a tool for public use as such, it's a very powerfull tool and if not used under guidance, one can end up nuking your own system.
I appreciate that is not the case here.
If you would like to learn more about these tools and malware in general come and join us at the univercity we would be happy to have you :)
Will catch you later.

Back with you John,

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Adobe Reader is a large program and uses unnecessary space.
If you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3.0 from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php << Recommended

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • Click Download
  • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

When the installation is complete go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.

post a fresh HJT log so I can see it went ok.

Dan, I did a little more housecleaning deleting programs I no longer used before rerunning HJT. I'm cleaning out my wife's computer of unused/old programs as well. HJT log follows: Thanks.

John,
we need to remove the older ( Adobe Reader 7.1.0 ) from add and remove programs and fix this line in HJT if still there.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe AcRdB7_1_0

Post a further HJT log
Is everything going well with the pc? as we are at the point where we will delete some of the tools used.
Let me know

Dan,
After I updated Adobe to ver. 9.0, I couldn't find any evidence of Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 on the programs list or in the add/remove programs of control panel. I searched the location flagged by HJT and found the folder(C:\programfiles\adobe\acrobat 7.0\ ...but nothing else, no subfolder\reader\..)...ie....\reader\adobe\adobeupdatemanager.exe was not in the acrobat 7.0 subfolder.
I searched for the file adobeupdatemanager on the whole C:\ drive with no hits.
I tried running an update of the newly installed Adobe 9.0 and then immediately running a new HJT scan to see if a different/newer update manager would load. I did not see anything in the HJT scan that had to do with Adobe updatemanager other than the original one in question. Is it possible that the adobeupdatemanager I have installed is still used on the newer versions of Adobe even though it looks like it is from the 7.0 version? Could the fact I have an older version(6.0) of Adobe Photoshop installed have anything to do with it?
Is there a way to delete this entry and see if the new Adobe 9.0 will update?
The pc seems to be fine and don't know if this adobe thing is a problem or not...Kaspersky didn't flag it.

This just in, I wanted to try MSIE 6.0 to see if some of the websites that have programs/help cleaning malware and such would load ok because when I was infected, Firefox would not load some of those sites so I had to use my laptop to get the programs(Malwarebyte). I don't usually use MSIE as Firefox comes first, then Opera and lastly MSIE. I thought there might be some malware that could activate if I started MSIE. I wanted to open each browser, surf a few malware help sites and make sure there were no more hijackings of each browser before I gave you the "everything is ok".
I opened MSIE and typed combofix in the search box and your program started immediately. Not wanting it to do something unasked for, I was able to terminate it by opening Sysinternals "process explorer" and kill the java tree that combofix was running under. I only did this when combofix prompted my to disable my AV(I guessed combofix was on hold at that point).
XP's taskmanager under "processes" running would not allow me to terminate it...it only reappeared. I can see why you want this uninstalled when complete! Pardon the lengthy post.
Cheers,
John

Hi, John, your previous version of adobe was it a paid for version or the free one?
Did you look in the adobe folder for Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0.
Did you remove the line in HJT as it may be a registery leftover.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"

Dan,
All Adobe's I have are the free ones except Photoshop 6.0(pretty old nowdays!).
Regarding this entry you were referring to from a few posts ago not your latest one:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe AcRdB7_1_0
There is no subfolder \Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe AcRdB7_1_0 in which to look for the adobeupdatemanager.exe
I even looked for the executable in question in the Acrobat 7.0 folder and there was no entry.
I'll be glad to let HJT remove the line above and you are probably right that it is a registry leftover.
The new line you posted...
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
is most likely from my new installation of Adobe Reader 9.0(installed day before yesterday). I think you meant the HJT line that has references to Acrobat 7.0, right?
I just had HJT fix the first line in this post(acrobat 7.0) and leave the second line(adobe reader 9.0) referenced alone.
I rebooted and everything seems ok. Adobe Reader 9.0 came up fine and I checked for an update and it updated fine.
Here is one last HJT log:
