Unread postby Odd dude » February 9th, 2009, 11:20 am

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm Odd dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you with your infection. However, it is important to take note of the following - quite the wall of text, I know, but please bear with me:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Only YOU must use these instructions, they are not suitable for any other computer, similar issues or not.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • In Windows Vista, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as administrator!
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you were to do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within five days
. I will post a reminder should you seem to fail to do this, however, if you fail to reply within five days then, unless I have been notified of your absence in advance, the topic shall be closed!
  • As I am still in training at the Malware Removal University, anything I do must be checked by an experienced malware fighter. This means there might be a slight delay in my answers.
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I am now analyzing your situation and hope to be back with you soon. While I am reviewing your situation, could you please do the following for me:

Make an Uninstall List
I need you to create an uninstall list so I can further analyze your situation.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place.
If hijackthis just closes when you try to save the uninstall list, then please proceed without the uninstall list.

Please post back:
  • Uninstall list
  • New hijackthis log

Before we begin cleaning you, I would like you to read the following topic:
http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... 11&t=33112

I want you to realize this: Person-to-Person file sharing programmes are the #1 cause of infection to people. The program might not be infected, but the files you download with it most certainly can - and in fact, most of them will - be infected.

Please uninstall the Person-to-Person file sharing programmes mentioned below through Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Azureus

Also uninstall any other P2P programs I may have missed. Thanks :)

RSIT
Please download random/random's system information tool (RSIT) and run it. At the disclaimer screen, choose a period of one month. Then click Continue. It will produce two logs:

  • log.txt (will be maximized)
  • info.txt (will be minimized)

Please post both in your next reply. If they won't fit into one post, divide them over multiple posts :)

Total RAM: 958 MB (7% free)

You may want to ask your local computer manufacturer to stick in another GB of RAM. You currently have very little RAM left which will cause a lot of slowness.
If you want me to I can list some Hijackthis entries which are programs which don't need to start automatically. Removing those will free up some more RAM.

FW: Norton Internet Worm Protection (disabled)

I hope you were aware that your firewall is disabled.

This program is malware and should be uninstalled through Add/Remove programs in the control panel:
URL Assistant

Now let's download and run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without expert guidance.

ComboFix uses very brute tactics to rip malware off your system. Do not panic if your antivirus software warns you about the file.

:!: Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software BEFORE running ComboFix!! :!:

  • Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix.
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply

If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, plug the cable/reciever/whatever you use to connect to the internet out and back in.

Thank you so much for your help.

Yes - please let me know.

I hope you were aware that your firewall is disabled.

I tried re-enabling it but it didn't work before. After the combofix, it works now.

I removed URL Assistant.

Here is the log from combofix:

Yes - please let me know.
OK, I will do so after you are clean of malware.

Run CFScript
Open notepad and copy/paste the following to it:

Code: Select all
File::
c:\windows\VPC32.INI
folder::
c:\program files\Azureus
c:\documents and settings\Ada Tsang\Application Data\Azureus
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"%windir%\\system32\\sessmgr.exe"=-
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{361ac05d-0e0d-11da-9aa9-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{361ac05d-0e0d-11da-9aa9-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{361ac05d-0e0d-11da-9aa9-806d6172696f}]

Save this to your desktop as "CFScript.txt".

Disconnect from the internet, disable your antimalware software like you did before, and drag CFScript into ComboFix

Image

ComboFix will run again, please be patient and post the log like usual.

Submit a file for analysis
We need to have something checked for malware. Please go to Jotti's.
  • Click Browse next to File to upload & scan and copy and paste the first line of the following list into the browse box:
    Code: Select all
    c:\windows\system32\EDE7127177.sys
  • Click Submit. The file will now be scanned for malware and the results will be displayed from the screen. Select the part where the virus scan results are shown (the part starting with A-squared and ending with VBA32) and copy and paste this to notepad.
  • Repeat this procedure for any other files I have listed.
  • Copy and paste the whole notepad file you just made into your reply.

Post back:
- Combofix log
- Jotti log
- New HijackThis log
- Description of how the computer is running

Re: Need help removing trojan.metajuan

Unread postby helpneeded » February 14th, 2009, 11:41 am

Also, computer is working much better now. Better, I wasn't able to open a word document directly from my email address. It said something about unable to access temp folder. But now it works.

Thanks so much.

Update your Adobe Reader
Your version of Adobe Reader is old and may contain security leaks. Please first uninstall the older version, then download and install the newest version from here.

Your Java is old
Java gets updated for a reason: fixing security holes (and improving performance). It is important to update to the newest version.
First, you must remove the old version. To do this:
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Software
  • Once the Add/Remove list has loaded, scroll down to Java Runtime Environment <version number> and remove it.
  • Next, download and install the latest version from here. The site is a bit confusing; this is what you should do:
    • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
    • Click the Download button to the right.
    • Choose the correct Platform. Also, check the box that says I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
    • Now, click Continue.
    • Click on the filename under Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop.
    • Now, close all other windows. Including Internet Explorer.
    • You can now install Java by double-clicking the executable you just downloaded.

Let's do the optional fixes next.

These hijackthis lines can all be fixed - to do so open hijackthis, click do a system scan only, put a check next to the lines you wish to fix, click fix checked, click yes to the warning:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
This is an orphan - doesn't do any harm, but I always clean these up.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DMXLauncher] C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\DMXLauncher.exe
This is part of Dell's Media Experience, a multimedia suite which offers functionality to organise and play music and digital video files. If you don't "need" this, I recommend you to fix this line.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WeatherEye] C:\Program Files\TheWeatherNetwork\WeatherEye\WeatherEye.exe
This is your WeatherEye programme, if you regularly use it, keep this line, otherwise you may want to fix it.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [googletalk] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /autostart
Google_Talk "enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free–anytime, anywhere in the world". Can be launched manually. I recommend fixing this, unless you use Google Talk every day and want it to automatically start.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DAEMON Tools] "C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\daemon.exe" -lang 1033
This is the Daemon Tools tray application. Unless you use Daemon Tools a lot, you don't need this to run every time your PC starts up, you can just launch it manually.
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
This is an application for optimizing Adobe Reader to start quickly. Unless you start, close, and restart Adobe Reader a lot, you don't need this to run every time your PC starts up.
(Note: after updating Adobe this line will show a bit differently).

After updating Java, this will show up too:
O23 - Service: Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService) - Sun Microsystems, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe
Same case as with the Adobe Reader line. You don't need it, unless you open, close and restart a lot of Java applications.

Delete RSIT from your desktop, and also delete this folder: c:\rsit

Uninstall ComboFix
  • Disable all your antimalware programs like you did previously
  • Click Start > Run and enter:
    Code: Select all
    ComboFix /u
  • Click OK
  • ComboFix will now uninstall itself

Congratulations!

As far as I can tell, you are CLEAN!

Have a big cup of Image, sit back & relax, and now please follow a few of the following tips; they will dramatically reduce your chance of getting infected again.

  • Turn on Automatic Updates if you have not done so. It is MANDATORY to keep your Windows updated, otherwise you are vulnerable to exploits! To turn on Automatic Updates: click Start > Control Panel > Security Centre > Automatic Updates.

Below are optional items. It's highly recommended to read them through, but decide for yourself how many of these recommendations (if any) you follow.

  • Install WinPatrol from here. Instructions for use are here.

  • Install SpywareBlaster to protect you from bad sites. Download - How to use it

  • Install a custom hosts file. Let's say I have a directory of 640kb's worth of bad sites. Let's say I can make sure you will never be able to access those sites, so you will never get any infection from those sites. It's like blocking a site - without site blocking tools. How would you like to never be able to visit (a lot, but not all of the) malware-infected sites again? Well, now you can!
First, we must disable a service, as Windows cannot work with a very large hosts file while that service is active. This will not affect anything else.
    The disabling routine:
    1. Click Start, then Run
    2. Copy and paste the following:
      Code: Select all
      sc config dnscache start= disabled
    3. Click OK.
Next, you can download the custom hosts file from here. Installation instructions can be found there as well.

  • Install Sandboxie. Sandboxie isolates programs into a sandbox. When you get infected, and the program that caused this (i.e. Internet Explorer) is inside the sandbox, the infection will remain trapped inside the sandbox. Then it only takes a few clicks to empty the sandbox and thus kill the virus. Sandboxie is completely free! Download it here.

Note that using Sandboxie does not guarantee that you will never get infected. Some malware can bypass Sandboxie, so don't let your guard down!

Please reply to this thread once more so we know it can be archived

To a certain extent they do.

I strongly recommend installing WinPatrol. Spywareblaster is not a bad idea either.

The hosts file blocks a few thousand malicious sites, so I recommend to install that too. It may get a bit complicated, though.

Sandboxie is really, really, really advanced and very hard to use, but once it is set up correctly it works splendid in malware prevention. But I can't stress enough that it's really hard to set up properly.

It's up to you, really, but I recommend at least WinPatrol.
