Search engine redirect, Need Help

Unread postby Biggie3077 » February 3rd, 2009, 2:16 pm

I'm having an issue with search engines results. When I search for something like Sherdog. The result title comes back as something for Sherdog, but when you look at the address for the result it is something totally different like http://www.couponmountain.com and not http://www.sherdog.net.

Hi Biggie3077,

Welcome to MRU. My name is davis. I will be helping you to fix your malware problems.
If your issues have been resolved or already received help elsewhere, then please let us know. If not, and still need help. Please follow the instructions in the following.
In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer. Please rescan your computer and post a new HJT log and an Uninstall List.

Make an Uninstall List

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
5. Click on the Save list button
6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default, it's named uninstall_list.txt.
7. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply and a fresh HJT log.

In your next reply, please post back:

1.New HJT log
2.Uninstall list Thanks.

Re: Search engine redirect, Need Help

Unread postby davis » February 10th, 2009, 8:20 pm

Hi Biggie3077,

The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Thanks

Step1

Please close all browsers and other windows while running GooredFix.

  • Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called Goored.txt).
Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

Step2

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text inside the code box below:

Code: Select all
@Echo off
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\drivers32" >> C:\look.txt
START C:\look.txt

Name the file as check.bat, making sure save as type is set to " All Files ". It should look like Image
Double click on check.bat & allow it to run. Copy and paste the content in your next reply (If the file does not open please check here for the file C:\look.txt.)

Step3

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here or Here.

  1. Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  2. Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  3. If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.
  4. In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  5. Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish. For more info, go to Here for your reference.
  6. Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GRS.txt" , and copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Step4

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

In your next reply, please post back:

1.Goored log
2.Look.txt
3.GRS.txt
4.RSIT log.txt and info.txt. Thanks.

Hi Biggie3077,

It seems that my search engine results are back to normal!!!

That sounds good. I notcie there were some urls in your Trusted Zone. Did you personally set the following urls as your Trusted Zone?
If not, Please run HijackThis! and click "Do a system scan only." Place checks next to the following entries,

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.advisorcompass.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ameriprise.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ampf.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ez-data.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ez-data.com/java
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ez-data.com/java/index.htm
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ezdata.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.smartofficeonline.com

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the following filepath to delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\tasks\At2.job

Reboot your pc. Other than that, Your logs looks good. Any issue left? If not, Let's do some housekeeping.

  1. Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  2. Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  3. Click the CleanUp! button.
  4. Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  5. If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  6. The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  7. Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Go to Start --> Run and copy/paste C:\WINDOWS\gmer_uninstall.cmd into the run box, click Ok. When that process completes, please reboot your computer.

Remember to delete the bat file, reg file, RSIT and the folder in C:\rsit and all the logs we have used.

Now that your system is clean, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - Now, you are free of virus. You should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    Turn off System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points and make a new one.
  2. Update your antivirus programs

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

  3. Update your Your Adobe Acrobat Reader

Old versions may render vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please download Adobe Reader 9 to your desktop.
Uninstall the old Adobe Reader from Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Install the new one.

  4. Update SP3

Microsoft has released the latest upgrades to the XP OS platform, which can be referenced HERE. It is critical to stay up to date with the latest upgrades to your Operating System, as this can help prevent future problems. Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. I recommend that you visit the link above and apply the SP3 patch.

  5. Make your Internet Explorer more secure

Please referring this thread to configure Internet Explorer 7 properly.

  6. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  7. Install a-squared Free -a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
