mbb,
Think those logs are good, but I want to research them carefully.
Be back to you later in the day.

mbb,
Looks good.
Please Restart your AntiVirus and re-connect to the Internet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, if found, and press Delete.
C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\ <== this folder only
You may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that,, note the name of the file, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.

Just to check on any required updates:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

Tell me how it's running.
Next and Last step will be Cleanup, downloading any required updates, and some added security.
So I am looking for a fresh HiJackThis log, an Uninstall List, and any comments on how it's running.

Mbb,
Some added security with a few updates and changes:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel(XP)
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Adobe Reader 7.0.9
SpywareGuard v2.2

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer.
It is the 1st one on the page, called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12
Select Windows, multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Download it, choose save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
--------------------------------------------------------
Latest Adobe Reader
  • Click here to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Select your Windows version and click on Download. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I would keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. If you want continuous protection from it, You can order the very inexpensive lifetime paid version thru this site.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close Help and Support Center.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

You should be good to go.

Hi,
I have applied all the stuff you specified except the system restore, however the PC will no longer conect to the internet (2nd PC still connects fine with same wiring etc) and the Java file will not instal as it comes up with 'Windows cannot open the file' and asks me to find the appropriate program to run the file. Any ideas on this ?
Thanks.

mbb,
We have not knowingly made any alterations to your Internet interface, but you had a very serious set of infections from a rootkit. Since these can hide their activities from the Windows system, it is not possible to know everything that may have been done.
The infections may have damaged files or registration entries involved in IE7.

You can repair damaged files or missing registry entries in Internet Explorer 7.
1. Start Internet Explorer 7.
2. Click the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.

You can also download Firefox on your other machine and install it. That may restore your connection.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

PCPitStop has an Internet troubleshooting Connection Center
http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp
That page also has a Connection Utility that can be downloaded and run to determine the source of connection difficulty.
PCPitStop has experts that specialize in troubleshooting this kind of a system problem.
