When I am in IE or Firefox and using Google, when I click on a link, it takes me to an ad page.
Also, my search toolbar in IE keeps changing from Google to Ask, even though I keep deleting Ask. I am not sure this is part of this malware or something else I installed.
I have seen a few other things happen tonight that worry me. A friend suggested I download Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool. When I clicked on download, nothing happened. I got the "thank you for downloading" page and nothing else happened.
He suggested I download Windows security files, but I have my computer on Automatic Updates. However, when I clicked on the Windows update link in my computer, the URL http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ shows me a Google page. And lastly, Google is now my homepage, even though I did not set it up that way.
So it appears that it has completely hijacked both of my browsers and I cannot do anything easy to fix it.
I have Mcafee and Webroot Spy Sweeper installed. I also tried Avira antivirus (trial) and Ad-aware (trial). I tried to install Spybot Search & Destroy, but it seems their site is down so it won't install. Either that, or this malware is keeping it from working.
It looks like these programs get rid of the thing, but then it comes back. I mean, I run a scan, and it seems to work ok, but then suddenly the ad pages come back. This has been going on for a few weeks now.
I am using a Dell Latitude D520, it's about 2 years old now, running Windows XP. I use the wireless card to connect to my main computer's DSL modem and router.
I am at my wit's end. I would rather not pay someone to get rid of this, and I would rather not have to reinstall Windows again (I did this a few months back to fix a problem with my DVD/CD-rom player/recorder-it is a big pain to do since I use so many programs).
