problems with smitfraud / spyaxe -- please help

I'm new to this site - (discovered it after seeing a referral on PC Advisor help forum). Please can anybody help, I'm having trouble removing Spyaxe that has somehow got onto my system.
I've run Spyware Doctor which stated it had found and removed the offender (but didn't)
I've also run 'Smitrem' - 'Highjack This' and 'Spy Axe Fix' all apparently without sucess.

Hello headblown and Welcome to Malware Removal,

Please do the following scans and post the results. I have a feeling Panda will show the culprit file.

STEP 1.
======
Cleaning Files

Navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

• Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
• Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
• On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
• In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
• On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
• Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
• Click OK.

Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see an checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

STEP 2.
======
Download Ewido

1. Download and install Ewido Security Suite It is a free trial version of the program.
2. Install ewido security suite
3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
4. The program will now go to the main screen

STEP 3.
======
Update Ewido
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

1. On the left hand side of the main screen click update
2. Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use Ewido manual updates

STEP 4.
======
Ewido Scan
Once the updates are installed do the following:

1. Click on scanner
2. Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
3. NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
   o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
   o If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
   o DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
   o If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
4. Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
5. Click Save report.
6. Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")



STEP 5.
======
Panda Active Scan
Please go to Panda ActiveScan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open...click the Check Now button

• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, Ewido report along with a new HijackThis Log, by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

CLEAN AGAIN - OH THANKYOU SO VERY MUCH.

Followed you instructions and there now seems to be no sign of the dreaded 'spyaxe' or 'smitfraud' on my system.

Took a while to download and scan the system using the programmes you said - but was worth every minute.

Your instructions were clear and consise - I know which experts I'll be staying with from now on - Thank you once again.

Just a note - after rebooting my system following the last 'highjackthis' scan - the SpyDoctor I already have installed on the system automatically did a full scan and found one reference to 'spyaxe' that was deleted prior to full boot up. No sign since

Glad everything worked! Please be sure to do the following:

STEP 1.
======
Cleanmgr
To clean temporary files:

1. Go > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
2. Scan your system for files to remove.
3. Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
4. Click OK to remove those files.
5. Click Yes to confirm deletion.

STEP 2.( Windows XP only)
======
Prefetch Folder
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\
Delete All files in this folder but not the Prefetch folder

STEP 3.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

Turn off System Restore.

1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.

1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 4.
======
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

2. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
   
   
3. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

4. Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.

5. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
   
   
6. Visit the Microsoft Office Update Site Frequently-If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free)
   
   
7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Susan,
thank you once again - with regards the other things, I have already carried out these checks including yet another full antivirus and system scan (just to be on the safe side) - all files (temp internet etc) have been cleaned.
With regards the virus definitions - all are kept up to date on regular basis, I already have SpyBot S & D on my system that is also kept updated, same with SpyDoctor.

Spyaxe has proved to be a pain - but still can't work out how it entered my system in the first place. At least its gone now - thanks to you.
