Please help me complete the cleaning process

Hi there,

I was infected on December 22 and was working with one of your helpers but my ORIGINAL TOPIC was closed.

I would really like your continued help.

In answer to my helper's last question - I CANNOT run anti-malware. I have tried to run it three times, and every time I get a blue screen, which says something about KERNAL_STACK_INPUT_ERROR. there is no anti-malware log to send you.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

Hi there,

I agree that I do appear to be free from the Trojan. However, I have two lingering problems.

1) if you look at the last page of my original post, my former helper asked me to edit a registry key, then install/run anti-malware. I get a blue screen whenever I try to run that program. I also have no idea what a registry key is. These two facts concern me. I guess I want some reassurance - can I be OK when I can't run a simple antimalware program without windows shutting down?

2) my anti virus program, macafee, is not updating. My previous helper thought that this wasn't related to the attack, but the problem started when the attack happened. However, it is intermittent. Last week, it WAS updating. Right now it is not. I am getting the message "failed to initialize common updater system. make sure macafee framework svc is running. macafee common framework returned error 80040154 @ 1" My former helper sent me a link, but there are a lot of (different) suggestions and I'm not sure what to do.

I had a scare today when I booted up. It took me 4 tries to get it going. Here is what happened:

First time: boot seemed normal but in windows explorer, I couldn't see my computer. I just kept getting the flashlight. I restarted.

Second time: I couldn't get past windows signon. Hard reboot.

Third time: tried booting under windows recovery console. got a blue screen that said "a virus has been detected..... if this is the first time you are seeing this, restart. If not, follow these instructions....". I restarted.

Fourth time: started up ok. Noticed that macafee was doing its full scan so I turned the macafee scan off. Realize now that is probably what was happening during that first time - it was probably hogging all system resources.

I am backing up everything now. Then I will restart the macafee full scan. If you have any advice/insight into my latest problem, please let me know. THANKS.
