Strange malware problem

Unread postby AdeV » January 16th, 2009, 10:02 pm

Hi,

First, thanks for this forum, it looks gr8! Now, my machine got an infection thru some dodgy website (wasnae me, honest). I've managed to clear the virus itself out (I think!), but I'm left with the problem that IE6 and Opera both go to a fake google.co.uk; and AVG is unable to access http://guru.avg.com for it's updates. So obviously something's still there, and I can't find it for the life of me. Clicking a virus-related link in FakeGoogle would suggest it's some variant of LookSmart malware.

There's an image of the phoney Google page here, with the real one underneath for comparison: http://www.solutionengineer.com/images/ ... google.jpg

Anyway, thanks in advance for looking @ this for me.

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

Hi,

Thanks - but in the end I managed to clear it out with a combination of Avast!, and a DOS prompt.

Cheers,
Ade.
