HijackThis log posted - ActiveX warning

Unread postby nottenst » January 19th, 2009, 10:35 am

A few days ago a small warning box started to appear on my PC saying "an active x control on this page might be unsafe to interact with other parts of this page". This is without my even having internet explorer open. So, something is running without my knowing what it is.

Neil

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

I don't see any signs of malware in this log. Lets look a bit more to be sure.

NOTE:. Because we are working on a Vista machine the tools we use you should right click them and choose run as administrator.

Open HJT

this time click on
Misc tools section

then:
Open uninstall Manager
click on save list.
Post that for me.

  • Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

This log will also produce a Hijackthis log so NO reason to post one of those.

Tell me more about what you saw ?
you wrote:A few days ago a small warning box started to appear on my PC saying

Where are you seeing this warning exactly?
So I'm clear on this you did not have IE 7 open, correct ?

Re: HijackThis log posted - ActiveX warning

Unread postby Bob4 » January 23rd, 2009, 5:28 pm

I think what your seeing is a security measure in internet explorer. Even though it's not open.
Let's try this.

Open Internet Explorer
Click tools >>Internet options
Click the Security tab,
Click Custom Level.

Under ActiveX controls and plug-ins,

Click disable (recommended) under the following security settings:

Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe

Let me know if you had this set to prompt...

_________________________________-
Let's also get a simple scan to see if there is anything on your machine.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

If you accidentally close it you may find it here.
    Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from Malwarebytes
  • Has the message stopped popping up?

Regarding the internet explorer settting
Open Internet Explorer
Click tools >>Internet options
Click the Security tab,
Click Custom Level.

Under ActiveX controls and plug-ins,

Click disable (recommended) under the following security settings:

Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe

Let me know if you had this set to prompt...
This has always been set to disable (recommended) for that setting.
-------------
Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware has been running for nearly 8 hours so far without finding anything, but I think I might have seen cause and effect of the warning this morning.

A small window popped up from Macrovision Software Manager (whatever that is) saying that there are some updates and just about immediately after that the ActiveX warning window appeared. The Macrovision Software Manager window quickly disappears. So, this was the first time I was able to connect something happening that with ActiveX warning. I am going to try to turn off the Macrovision Software Manager from the startup processes and see if having that not running will eliminate the warning.

Meanwhile I'll let Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware continue scanning.

Thanks,

Neil

Re: HijackThis log posted - ActiveX warning

Unread postby Bob4 » January 25th, 2009, 9:09 am

A small window popped up from Macrovision Software Manager

That helps to know where the window is coming from. At least it's not malware.

Disabling this from running may take care of that pop-up.

I am confused. After putting a check mark by these entries am I supposed to just close the window, press the fix checked button, or what?

Thanks,

RUN HJT

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISUSPM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe" -scheduler

Close that.

That appears to have eliminated the popup ActiveX script warning. I have not seen it since eliminating those two items.

Thanks,

Neil
