Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi nurse278 and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I apoligise for the delay the forum has been very busy of late.

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Extra note: Please be aware as I am still in training all of my fixes/posts require prior checking by a Expert. So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

Hi Dakeyras, Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you,. Due to work commitments, I haven't been using the computer much since I did the first posting but I can't say that I have noticed any differences in how it performs. Also , I was rather afraid of making a bad situation worse by using it without further advice. I have though changed my passwords to my Hotmail account in a different location.

Unread postby Dakeyras » January 8th, 2009, 3:18 pm

Hi :)

You are welcome. Not a problem and thank you for informing myself of the current situation.

A few questions before we start.

1 - Have you set the about:blank for the Internet Explorer Start Page yourself ?
2 - I noticed something has been installed to/from a Drive with the letter designation I, is this a CD-ROM type drive and or a USB/Flash drive, are you aware of this at all ?

Next:

You have Zone Alarm Spy Blocker presently installed. This is actually a variation of the Ask Toolbar and I advise you uninstall this for the following reasons.

To uninstall as follows:

Please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Zone Alarm Spy Blocker

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • Answers to my questions.
  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Hi Dakeyras,
Re Queries,
(1) Yes, I believe I set up about About Blank a long time ago in IE . I normally use Firefox instead of IE and it too is set up this way.
(2) A friend had a problem with his hard drive a while ago and in order to access the info on it, he used an external drive and connected it via a USB drive in my machine in order to transfer the information to my machine and then planned to get it over to DVD's etc in order to save the information permanently as it looks like he is going to have to reformat his hard drive.

I have done what you suggested re Zone Alarm Spy Blocker and deleted it as per your instructions.

Computer Performance:

Whilst using Hotmail night before last,in the midst of trying to send an e-mail, I suddenly began to loose ongoing curser control . ( I normally use a Logiteck USB Trackball Mouse converted to PS2 connection via an adapter with no problems) Within 10 minutes I lost full curser control. Alt Delete also did not work, and often over the last few months hasn't worked properly and everything freezes usually whilst on the net, pressing Reset still didn't bring back Curser Control and I had to Turn the power off manually.

I tried an ordinary mouse last night and it gave me some some curser control , allowing me to run Ad-Aware. This showed up that I have a Trozan called Agent ATAK on my computer which it Healed. AVG does not show up any infections. I have tried again this morning to use the Trackball Mouse to no avail. Still no Curser movement whatsoever with it in situ.I am therefore having to return to using the ordinary mouse once more and I do have proper curser control with it .

Hi :)

OK I am suspecting this may be a hardware issue either with your computer and or the the Logitech USB Trackball Mouse. Though not ruling out malware just yet.

I would have preferred that you did not run a scan with either AVG Anti-Virus or Lavasoft Ad-Aware as this actually hinders myself attempting to help yourself.

No harm done this time however, please just stick to running any scans etc I ask for, thank you.

Many Thanks for your help so far.

You are welcome!

Your Adobe Reader application is out of date. Out of date versions have security vulnerabilities.

Please go here select Operating System/Country then choose to upgrade to Adobe Reader 8.1.3 as this is the correct version(Not v9) to upgrade to for your current installation.

Also your Java installation is out of date and older versions also have security vulnerabilities.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Next:

  • Click here to visit Java's website.
  • Scroll down to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11. Click on Download.
  • Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  • Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  • Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  • Click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  • Double click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.

Next:

Now we need to temporally disable Zone Alarm Firewall, as it might interfere with the HijackThis fixes. It will start as normal upon the next system reboot:

  • Right-click the Zone Alarm icon in the System Tray, and select Shutdown Zone Alarm.

Now please launch/start HiJackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=
O16 - DPF: {3AF4DACE-36ED-42EF-9DFC-ADC34DA30CFF} (PatchInstaller.Installer) - file://I:\content\include\XPPatchInstaller.CAB
O16 - DPF: {8B1BC605-C593-4865-8F5B-05517F0CD0BB} (MSSecurityAdvisorCD Class) - file://I:\Content\include\msSecUcd.cab

Now click on Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.

  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
  • You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on OK then Yes.
  • Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

Next:

Now I am going to ask you to perform a more in-depth scan of your computer:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms apart from the trackball problem ?
  • Both RSIT logs.

Hi Dakeyras, here is the information as requested.

[*]With the exception of the mouse issue, I am not sure if there is any difference as with the download of Java, it didn't download properly first and I had to re do it. I have only used your links so cannot comment as yet re how it will behave in general use especially when I need to use the internet.

Unread postby Dakeyras » January 10th, 2009, 12:25 pm

Hi :)

With the exception of the mouse issue, I am not sure if there is any difference as with the download of Java, it didn't download properly first and I had to re do it. I have only used your links so cannot comment as yet re how it will behave in general use especially when I need to use the internet.

OK thank you for informing myself. I am sorry to learn you encountered problems with the new Java installation, out of interest did either of your installed AVG8 Anti-Virus or Zone Alarm software firewall flag anything during the download/installation process?

I see you have not updated Adobe Acrobat, any particular reason for this, a oversight or problems encountered ?

OK so far I do not see any indication of malware or a actual problem with your computer. I actually suspect your Trackball is faulty and possibly close to becoming inoperable.

So just for a further check so we can rule out malware please carry out the below:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases

  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

This online tuturial will help explain how to use the aforementioned online scan.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any problems encountered and or symptoms ?
  • Kaspersky Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

Hi Dakeyras,
Here is the information you requested.

RE the Adobe Reader, I had actually downloaded it to my desktop but hadn't realized in addition, the programme needed to be fully opened there to before it became active. Anyway, it is now fully operational .

RE, anything wayward being flagged up during the download process of Java, no, nothing that comes to mind. May I ask, re this programme, it appears to be constantly wanting permission to go on the net, is this normal and as I rarely use this programme do I have to let it do so every time?

Computer appears to running quite well at present. Occasionally a bit slow whilst on the net but not freezing as it used to.

Hi :)

RE the Adobe Reader, I had actually downloaded it to my desktop but hadn't realized in addition, the programme needed to be fully opened there to before it became active. Anyway, it is now fully operational .

Fine

RE, anything wayward being flagged up during the download process of Java, no, nothing that comes to mind. May I ask, re this programme, it appears to be constantly wanting permission to go on the net, is this normal and as I rarely use this programme do I have to let it do so every time?

Java is not the most reliable of applications in my opinion and personally I would not use it at all but the choice is yours to do so or not. If you rarely use it then uninstall it completely via Add/Remove in the Control Panel.

Computer appears to running quite well at present. Occasionally a bit slow whilst on the net but not freezing as it used to.

OK you system is running dangerously low on resources:
System drive C: has 4 GB (14%) free of 27 GB

The Hard-Drive is just under the recommended free space available of 15%, this will cause problems for any type of system maintenance and will eventually result in system instability. I suggest you uninstall any software applications you do not need to free up space.

Please read this topic pertaining to system maintenance, it will prove of benefit toward keeping your computer both stable and improve performance.

Optional Advice:

Total RAM: 255 MB (41% free)

Though Microsoft claims XP will run with a mere 128 MB of installed Random Access Memory in my opinion a minimum of 1 GB is far better.

If you wish to upgrade the installed memory, Crucial have a Active X scanner which is perfectly safe and will advise if your system can support any upgraded memory modules. They cater for the US/UK and Europe.

Re: your Trackball :

No harm in trying the below first:

Turn the device upside down and remove mouse ball retainer plate or trackball bottom cover. Usually the retainer plate can simply be rotated and lifted out. Some older mice and most trackballs have screws holding the plate or bottom cover in place. Remove the ball carefully.

Clean ball with the moistened cloth, wipe with dry cloth and set it aside. (Make sure it is completely dry before reassembling.) I blew loose dirt out of the ball cage with a compressed air duster, held some distance away to lessen the impact. Be careful here so that you don't damage any components. In my case, I had to use a toothpick and tweezers to dislodge some of the matted lint around the contacts in the ball cage. A cotton swab lightly moistened with alcohol may also be helpful for cleaning rollers or contacts and the inside of the ball cage.

When cleaning mice, take a close look at the rollers inside. (Most have three, some just two.) You will probably see dark lines of dirt that have built up over time. Work a cotton swab moistened just slightly with rubbing alcohol along each roller, rubbing side to side until the line of dirt is gone.

Once everything is squeaky clean, place the ball back in the ball cage and replace the retainer plate or bottom cover. That's it; you're done, and your mouse or trackball should be as good as new.

If still no joy and providing the Trackball is still under 12 moths old, it should be still covered by the product guarantee and be replaced by the vendor you purchased it from be it Logitech or a IT store etc, providing you kept the receipt/proof of purchase.

If this is not the case, most unfortunate I'm afraid :(

Download Accelerator Plus:

DAP is not technically malware, but it may include malware and allow it into your system. Note that the free version is adware based.

If you have recently installed this my advice is to uninstall via Add/Remove in the Control Panel.

However if not the case just delete the following please:

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete this file (if present):

C:\Documents and Settings\Evelyn\My Documents\New Briefcase\dap7.exe

Next:

Congratulations! Your machine now appears to be malware free, I just have a few tasks for your good self to carry out and some advice about on-line safety etc.

Please delete both RSIT.exe and this folder C:\RSIT and other logs created that have not been deleted.

Then empty your Recycle Bin.

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:

I advise you visit:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftup ... x?ln=en-US

Install the Active X

Once installed it will advise set Auto-Updates if not set and you then you will be able to manually check for updates also via:

Start >> All Programs >> Microsoft Updates

Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware, either keep this as a on-demand scanner only or uninstall it, the choice is yours.

Other installed security software:

Grisoft AVG8, this automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advice you run a through scan once a week.

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Backup regularly:

You never know when your PC will become unstable or become so infected that you can't recover it. Follow this Microsoft article to learn how to backup. Follow this article by Microsoft to restore your backups.

Alternatively, you can use 3rd-party programs to back up your data. One example can be found at Bleeping Computer.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of stuff, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

Only use one of the above.

Finally a educational source:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein:

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Any questions feel free to ask, if not happy/safe surfing :)

Thanks Dakeyras,

Will try your advice re the trackball once I manage to get the stuff needed together and can work in good light.

Re Java, you mentioned that you are not very fond of this programme, I only have it because some applications demand it. Is there a safer alternative that you consider might be better suited for me to use that does the same thing?

I'll do some work re lightening the load on the computer and taking stuff off that I don't use v much plus the other stuff you suggested I jettison . Hopefully that should stabilize everything.

Many thanks for everything, your help is very much appreciated.

Hi :)

You are very welcome!

There are no alternatives to Java that I am aware of that are not some sort of Computer Programming application. If some of your installed applications and or site's you visit use this, fine by all means leave it installed.

I am only not that fond of it because if not updated correctly the older installations are left in place and these pose a security risk and create a back door for malware infections.

You computer is not at risk however I may add as you now have the up to date version and we uninstalled the out of date application.
