I am using a router w/ vonage VOIP service. Linksys RTP300. The password is still set to default, is this a problem?
Just now had Symantec block "Trojan.Vundo" with filename pajoyuso.dll in WINDOWS\system32\
I get popups when using both IE7 and FireFox! The frequent popup is to install "Antivirus 2009" and has the Microsoft "shield" emblem as a logo.
AARGH!!!

Re: trojans, popups etc for "malware removers!"

Unread postby Odd dude » January 9th, 2009, 4:18 pm

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm Odd dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you with your infection. However, it is important to take note of the following - quite the wall of text, I know, but please bear with me:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Only YOU must use these instructions, they are not suitable for any other computer, similar issues or not.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • In Windows Vista, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as administrator!
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you were to do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within five days
. I will post a reminder should you seem to fail to do this, however, if you fail to reply within five days then, unless I have been notified of your absence in advance, the topic shall be closed!
  • As I am still in training at the Malware Removal University, anything I do must be checked by an experienced malware fighter. This means there might be a slight delay in my answers.
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I am now analyzing your situation and hope to be back with you soon. While I am reviewing your situation, could you please do the following for me:

Make an Uninstall List
I need you to create an uninstall list so I can further analyze your situation.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place.

Please post back:
  • Uninstall list
  • New hijackthis log

Also, could you please inform me if this is a home/desktop computer?

Re: trojans, popups etc for "malware removers!"

Punkbuster warning
I see you have Punkbuster installed. This is spyware. Punkbuster can take control over various aspects of your computer, and some gaming tools not unlike Punkbuster also hinder their removals. By the definition we handle here, Punkbuster is actual spyware. Therefore, I now ask you to decide the following:
  • Either we try to leave Punkbuster alone but there is no guarantee a spyware component doesn't 'accidentally' get taken out; so Punkbuster might break. This will, of course, also break your ability to play games using Punkbuster enabled servers.
  • Or we can just remove Punkbuster. You can reinstall it afterwards if you wish, but please keep in mind that it is spyware.
  • Another option is to not clean this computer at all. This ensures Punkbuster will continue to function.
Please let me know what you would like to do.

If you would like me to attempt to clean the infections please read this topic: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... 11&t=33112

I want you to realize this: Person-to-Person file sharing programmes are the #1 cause of infection to people. The program might not be infected, but the files you download with it most certainly can - and in fact, most of them will - be infected.

Please uninstall the Person-to-Person file sharing programmes mentioned below through Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

µTorrent

Also uninstall any other P2P programs I may have missed. Thanks :)

After performing those steps, post a new Uninstall list.

Re: trojans, popups etc for "malware removers!"

Unread postby Odd dude » January 12th, 2009, 2:26 am

Hi jeremys78.

I am not sure whether just uninstalling Punkbuster completely removed it.
My standard instructions for uninstalling Punkbuster are as follows - please follow them, and if something doesn't work, just proceed to the next step. This will ensure a full removal of Punkbuster.
  • Please download this application.
  • Start it and click Uninstall.
  • Once finished, click Start>Run and copy and paste this:
    Code: Select all
    cmd /c for %i in (A B K) do sc delete PnkBstr%%i
  • Click OK. A black box will flash very briefly, this is normal.
  • Double click My Computer on your desktop and browse to c:\windows\system32\drivers
  • Delete this file if it's there: PnkBstrK.sys

Now let's proceed with the fixing of the other issues.

Temporarily disable Norton antivirus
Please right click the Norton Antivirus system tray icon.
  • Choose Disable Auto-Protect
  • Select a duration of five hours, so that it will not interfere with what we need to do
  • Click OK
Do not forget to reverse this process when I give the All Clean.

ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without expert guidance.

ComboFix uses very brute tactics to rip malware off your system. Do not panic if your antivirus software warns you about the file.

:!: Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software BEFORE running ComboFix!! :!:

  • Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix.
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply

If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, plug the cable/reciever/whatever you use to connect to the internet out and back in.

Post the log from ComboFix and a new HJT log.

Ok, the PB-removal tool encountered an error and quit.

ComboFix ran and installed a recovery console. Then it scanned. Upon reboot:
1. Warning Dialog box "16 bit win sybsystem" config.nt system file is not suitable for running DOS and MS Windows apps (Close / Ignore) - I chose "ignore"
2. Spybot S&D popped up and started scanning - I immediately exited it.
3. Windows decided to start downloading updates

Here is a copy of the ComboFix log:

Re: trojans, popups etc for "malware removers!"

Disable PrevX until the computer is clean
* Right click on the Prevx icon in your system tray and choose Show Management Console.
* On the Management Console click the Protection Level drop-down menu.
* You will see three levels:
    o Maximum
    o Off
    o User Defined
* To disable all protection set the level to Off.
* You will receive a prompt asking "You are about to change your security settings. Do you wish to continue?" Click Yes.
* Click the X on the upper right hand corner to exit the Management console.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to this directory: c:\windows\repair
Copy these two files: config.nt and autoexec.nt to this folder: c:\windows\system32
When prompted to replace the old files, please allow.
That should fix that error message you got when CF rebooted your PC.

Run CFScript
Open notepad and copy/paste the following to it:

Code: Select all
file::
c:\windows\system32\boheyuje.exe
c:\windows\system32\ziwazele.exe
c:\documents and settings\JS\Application Data\PnkBstrK.sys
registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"%windir%\\system32\\sessmgr.exe"=-
"c:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\mmc.exe"=-

Save this to your desktop as "CFScript.txt".

Disconnect from the internet, disable your antimalware software like you did before, and drag CFScript into ComboFix

Image

ComboFix will run again, please be patient and post the log like usual. Also post another hijackthis log and a description of remaining issues.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
