Unread postby Odd dude » January 2nd, 2009, 5:49 am

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm Odd dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you with your infection. However, it is important to take note of the following - quite the wall of text, I know, but please bear with me:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Only YOU must use these instructions, they are not suitable for any other computer, similar issues or not.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • In Windows Vista, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as administrator!
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you were to do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within five days
. I will post a reminder should you seem to fail to do this, however, if you fail to reply within five days then, unless I have been notified of your absence in advance, the topic shall be closed!
  • As I am still in training at the Malware Removal University, anything I do must be checked by an experienced malware fighter. This means there might be a slight delay in my answers.
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I am now analyzing your situation and hope to be back with you soon. While I am reviewing your situation, could you please do the following for me:

Make an Uninstall List
I need you to create an uninstall list so I can further analyze your situation.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place.

Please post back:
  • Uninstall list
  • New hijackthis log

Re: doubleclick and AntiVirus 2009 problems

Unread postby Odd dude » January 4th, 2009, 2:09 pm

Sorry for the delay.

You have Windows Defender running.
This is good as Windows Defender protects you from many malicious changes to your registry. However, Windows Defender is a computer program, which has no way of distinguishing between good or malicous intentions; this means it might hinder the modifications I need to make to your system.

This means that Windows Defender will need to be disabled until you have been cleaned of malware.

  1. Double-click on the Windows Defender icon in your system tray. It looks like this: Image
  2. Click Tools at the top of the window.
  3. Click Options (under the heading Settings)
  4. Uncheck Automatically scan my computer (recommended) under Automatic scanning
  5. Uncheck Use real-time protection (recommended) under Real-time protection options
  6. Click Save to save your settings.

When I give you the all-clear post, remember to reenable it!

Fixing malicious lines in Hijackthis

You must fix some malicious entries using Hijackthis.

  • Start HijackThis by right-clicking the icon and choosing Run as administrator
  • Click Do a system scan only
  • Put a check next to the following items. If one of them isn't present, don't worry, just proceed to the next one.
      R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
      R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: SearchSettings Class - {E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D} - C:\Program Files\Search Settings\kb127\SearchSettings.dll
  • Make sure that all other open windows are closed!
  • Press Fix checked.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to and delete this folder:
C:\Program Files\Search Settings

Install Adobe Reader
Okay, here's the deal.

You're using an outdated version of Adobe Acrobat, which will undoubtedly contain security leaks.

I am not going to force you to update because it costs quite some money to do so, however I insist that you use an updated version for viewing PDF files.
For anything else which the reader cannot do, feel free to use your Acrobat 6.

So now please download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from here.
From now on, use the Reader to read PDF files.

Your OpenOffice is old
Unless you have a reason to stay with version 2.4, I recommend you to update your version of OpenOffice to 3.0, to seal possible security leaks.Updating can be done through OpenOffice's web site

Install a firewall
There is no firewall installed on your computer!
Either that, or you're using Windows Firewall, which is not a good idea.

Firewalls are programs that monitor incoming and outcoming connections to your computer. Did you know that, just by connecting to the internet, you are being exposed to hundreds of treats immediately? The way to solve this, is to use a firewall, and up-to-date antivirus software.

Windows Firewall only monitors incoming connections. This means that, once you are infected, the malware is free to ask for new instructions, send private data to its creator, or invite its malware buddies to come over. In other words: it's almost as good as no firewall at all.

Download a free for personal use firewall NOW from one of these sources:
COMODO Personal Firewall
Online Armor Free

(COMODO also bundles antivirus - if you already have antivirus software make sure you don't install COMODO's antivirus as well).
