Malware Assistance - can't remove with my own small brain :(

Unread postby Combat Yeoman » December 31st, 2008, 6:44 pm

I've got what I believe to be malware on my computer and can't seem to figure out how to get rid of it. It's taken over my desktop turned it black and has a message Warning Dangerous Spyware. I also have a pop-up stating Warning! Security report in the lower right hand corner.

I've run McAfee virus scan (nothing found) and done a quick windows update (no luck).

I have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and I was able to run it initially and it found nothing however I saw it hadn't been updated since Sep 08 so I then attempted to download the updated version. I am unable to successfully install or run it now. I get numerous application error window pop-ups that states "exception EInvalidop in module MBAM-Setu-.tmp ... and a pop up stating INvalid Floating point operation.

Now I'm also getting a window stating MSKDetct.exe has encounted a problem and needs to close. prompting me to either debug or close.

I've also tried to download and install super-anti spyware and spybot. I can download them but not run them (invalid floating point operation).

I'm not sure what to attempt to do from here. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Here is my HJT Log:

Bv202,

Thanks for the response. While Malwarebytes and Superantispy were being prevented for working I was able to run them both in safe mode and that "seems" to have cleaned things up.

I really appreciate the assitance and quick response. Happy new year.

Here is my current Hijackthis logfile (I'll wait to hear if you see any additional issues).

Hi Combat Yeoman

Nice to hear you managed to run these programs, it looks like they indeed cleaned the infection. Let's have a look now if there are still things present on the computer.

Firstly, could you please give me the logfile Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) made? You'll find it in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\
Copy and paste the content of it here.

ATF-Cleaner
Please download ATF cleaner
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply.

RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

In your next reply, please post:
1) The MBAM logfile
2) The Kaspersky report
3) The RSIT logs
4) Tell me if there are still any problems

I ran the Kaspersky anti-virus and it did not detect anything. However, I failed to get the report. (I've run two additional anti-virus programs). I'll run it again later but it took over 3 hours to complete...

Here's the RSIT logs:

Hello Combat Yeoman

It seems there is another rogue program present on the computer now :(
Let's remove it first :)

    MyWay Search Assistant

Download and Run OTMoveIt3
Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
:Services
jatmlano

:Files
C:\utorrent.exe
C:\Program Files\SAV

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3

Hi Combat Yeoman

I'm afraid I have some bad news - an important system file is infected and needs to be replaced with the original one to fix this. The easiest way to do this is via the Windows CD. Do you have the CD? If you don't have it, don't worry, we'll use an alternative way in that case.

Hi Combat Yeoman

There might be an easier way to fix it - let's try that first :)

SDFix
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi Combat Yeoman

It didn't work :(
Let's try the other way:

Upload a File to Jotti
Please visit http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
c:\windows\system32\dllcache\userinit.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

Hi Combat Yeoman

I'm afraid that file is infected too, so we can't use it. There is one more location I know of on the computer where a 'backup' of the file can be stored, but it's not always present. If it isn't (or if it is infected too), I'm afraid you'll need to use a Windows CD. The one you have is not the correct one; you need a XP Professional CD, not the Home edition :(
It's fine to lend a CD from a friend/family; we just need it to copy one file from.

Upload a File to Jotti
Please visit http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\userinit.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

If you get a message that the file doesn't exist, please tell me if you are able to get a Windows XP Professional CD as we'll need it.
