Unwanted IE windows

Unread postby trags » December 26th, 2008, 3:57 pm

I am running McAfee suite, but it doesn't think anything is wrong. I guess opening an IE window while browseing with Firefox seems normal to them. Anyway, here's my HijackThis log:

I'm looking forward to your assistance. This is my daughter's laptop (college student), so I don't have 24/7 access. Fortunately, she lives at home, so availability will be pretty good. I have McAfee's VirusScan and Internet Suite installed, and have run Spybot S&D. I know she has downloaded games from sites before (thus Wild Tangent is present).
I forgot to mention in my initial post that I suspect mazimiru.dll, modisemi.dll, wakuribi.dll, and sufohuwe.dll, since these are unsigned libraries. However, I'll not do anything without your direction first.

Hello trags,

I notice that the names of the suspect DLLs has changed! Hope this log is useful.

Well it still shows that you are infected by Vundo, which tends to re-create new randomly named files.
----------------------------------------------
Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

McAfee
Symantec

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them.
----------------------------------------------
I assume that Symantec has expired, and what i see are remainants of the old installations.
So follow these instructions to completely remove it from your system:

REMOVE NORTON

ONLY if you don't have an active subscription, use below link to uninstall Norton.

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for your own version.
----------------------------------------------
REMOVE VIEWPOINT

You have Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. These programs are not malware but are considered as foistware instead of malware since they are installed without user's approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove them.

To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.
----------------------------------------------
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
----------------------------------------------
Post back:

A few notes:
I was able to de-install Symantec LiveUpdate from the control panel before I ran the Norton removal program.
Viewpoint Media Player was the only Viewpoint program in the list of installed programs in the control panel.

:P I noticed that combofix removed a large number of variants of those unsigned DLLs!
I believe I followed your instructions correctly. Thank you. What is next?

Hello trags,

I was able to de-install Symantec LiveUpdate from the control panel before I ran the Norton removal program.
Viewpoint Media Player was the only Viewpoint program in the list of installed programs in the control panel.

Ok very good.

I noticed that combofix removed a large number of variants of those unsigned DLLs!
I believe I followed your instructions correctly. Thank you.

Yes it did, you did fine with my instructions.

I have some questions for you and i want you to upload a file before continuing.
Did you create the below file and folder to keep your JunkCrap inside?
If yes, is there anythink you would like to keep before i remove them?

C:\JunkCrap.rar << File
C:\JunkCrap << Folder

Also do you use any software from this site?
http://www.iarsn.com/

I see a folder named:
c:\program files\Iarsn

I would like a confirmation that you know what that folder is.

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 10Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all.

<b>Now for the answers:</b>
I found a large number of folders in the root C: directory with generated names that seemed to only contain some logs. As a cleanup measure I consolidated them into a .rar archive to keep for short term to see if something needed them. It was my intention from the start to delete them shortly. I have no idea where they come from.

I use TaskInfo from Iarsn in my job (it lets me look inside processes for handles and threads). I had a leak in one of the programs I was developing recently, and it turned out to be orphaned handles. I could see this with this tool. The installation on this notebook was temporary (we have a site license at work, but I KNOW it doesn't apply to home use - the site download version work pretty well, however). I have already removed it. This was how I identified the suspect DLLs.

My daughter has noted that the pop-ups no longer occur. We're making progress.
Thanks,

Hello trags,

I found a large number of folders in the root C: directory with generated names that seemed to only contain some logs. As a cleanup measure I consolidated them into a .rar archive to keep for short term to see if something needed them. It was my intention from the start to delete them shortly. I have no idea where they come from.

Ok, do you want to keep it?

I won't remove it in my fix, but you can remove them both:

C:\JunkCrap.rar << This is too big.
C:\JunkCrap
I use TaskInfo from Iarsn in my job

Ok thanks for all the information.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=38040
    Collect::
    c:\windows\system32\hikemavi.dll
    c:\windows\system32\sazuduwe.dll

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\Noelle Rogers\Application Data\Viewpoint
    c:\program files\Viewpoint

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

First, I note that I am currently unable to remove the C:\JunkCrap folder. When I try to delete C:\JunkCrap\2d54cd5d5ba8bb75e61d762d149f\update, I encounter a popup which states: Cannot delete update: Access is denied. I think I might need to run chkdsk when this is finished.

OK. First the ComboFix log:

Re: Unwanted IE windows

Unread postby chryssi2001 » January 3rd, 2009, 5:10 am

Hello trags,

First, I note that I am currently unable to remove the C:\JunkCrap folder. When I try to delete C:\JunkCrap\2d54cd5d5ba8bb75e61d762d149f\update, I encounter a popup which states: Cannot delete update: Access is denied. I think I might need to run chkdsk when this is finished.

C:\JunkCrap\2d54cd5d5ba8bb75e61d762d149f\update
Do not remove that one. Just remove the rest.

Move that one (2d54cd5d5ba8bb75e61d762d149f\update) on your C:\ drive, where i suspect it was before you moved it to JunkCrap Folder.
(Click on it, cut/paste on your C:\ drive.)
It looks it's an update for your machine and that the certain file is not Junk ;)

Do the same for any other files which you can't remove from your JunkCrap folder.

Is there anything left?

Yes we are not over yet, i'll let you know when we are done.

Since I was not instructed to disable McAfee, it was still running. During the scan from BMAM, two detection events occurred. excerpt from the log:

Re: Unwanted IE windows

Unread postby chryssi2001 » January 3rd, 2009, 2:40 pm

Hello trags,

So that warning was from McAfee?
Please update and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again, and post back the report.
Tell me if any other warnings, or any files mentioned.
----------------------------------------------
Rooter.exe

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop.
  • Then double-click it to start the tool.
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here.
----------------------------------------------
Latest version of Java doesn't show in HijackThis log, so i want you to go in your Add/Remove programs, and see if you have the latest update which is "Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 11. If this is the one you have ignore the below instructions.

If you have an earlier version, follow the instructions below.
----------------------------------------------
Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 11.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:

According to the control panel, "Java(TM) 6 Update 11" is installed. The text of this entry doesn't match the name that you specified (and I would have expected the text to appear as you specified, "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11"). However the path is C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\. Should I re-install this update?

Generally, the computer is running very well.

Thomas
