My symptoms are:

When I open a new tab in either Firefox or IE 7.0, a page pops up with either a random ad or a page that looks something like a MS "Anti-Virus 2009" ad that tells me I'm infected. Also, I have also received a popup in the system tray telling me to install "Antivirus 2009" which I have not done.

I ran my F-secure antivirus program and found and destroyed Trojan.Win32.Monder, but the problem continues. F-secure has found a couple of intrusions, but it doesn't seem to find this.

Tried to run Ad-Aware, but the malware stops it from completing its tasks.

Here is the HJT log:

Hello ,

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forums! My name is Adam and I will be assisting you with getting the malware off of your computer. Please observe the following points before we start:
  1. If at any point you don't understand something, please let me know and I will be glad to expain or go more into depth for you. :)
  2. I am still in training, so my responses may take more time than usual because all of my posts must be checked by an expert or teacher.
Also, please remember, I am a volunteer and I have a personal life. I go to school full time, have a part time job, and I do sports. A lot of this takes a lot of time.
  3. Please keep all of your replys in this topic/thread and do not make a new topic/thread, thanks!
  4. Please stick with this, don't stop responding because the symptoms are gone, the infection could still be there. Keep replying to my posts until I give you the All Clean message. ;)
  5. If you don't reply within five days after my last instructions this topic will be closed. If you will not be able to reply within five days please tell me so the topic will not be closed.
  6. Please do not run other tools to remove the malware unless I ask you to until I give you the all clean. They will just mess up my fixes and make things more complicated, not fix the problem.

Make an Uninstall List

Next, please make an uninstall list using HijackThis.
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply. Please also include a new HijackThis log.

Regards,
Adam

Thanks so much for your help, Adam.

I have F-secure running and it has quarantined 4 viruses:

Trojan.Win32.Agent
Trojan.Spy.Win32.Agent
Trojan.Win32.Monder (2 instances)

I also found Trojan.Win32.Monder.gen through a Kaspersky online scan.

Despite catching these, the problem persists. I can't locate anymore viruses now.

Here is the log of the scan and the apps list:

Hello,

Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a blue Image sign.
  • right click it-> select Unload.
  • The F-Secure sign should now be surrounded by a red striked through circle (looking like this: Image )
You successfully disabled the F-Secure Guard.

Download and Run ComboFix
Please visit this page to download and run Combofix - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of its process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. You will see the following message if Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is not installed.

    Image

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, a log will be produced. Please post this log in your next reply.

Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Is Magix.net your ISP?

In your next reply, please include:
  1. ComboFix log
  2. A new HijackThis log

Adam

Hi Adam:

I have tried for several hours to get ComboFix to run, but I don't seem to be able to get past an initial blank command prompt screen. I have downloaded it from three different sites. I have uninstalled it several times. I have rebooted several times. I have changed the properties to "unblock."

I have installed the Windows recovery console successfully. I have followed the instructions on bleeping computer, but I never get to the screen where ComboFix is preparing to run.

Also, in your instructions to unload F-secure, there are two options, which you did not sp[ecify: First, there is unload and continue with current security level, and second, unload and allow all network traffic. I picked the second version of unload, sisnce you did not specify.

I did create a HJT log, which I will include below.

DO you know why ComboFix will not run on my computer?

Hello Adam:

The files you asked me to delete with OTMoveIt3 and HJT are no longer there. As you can see from the second HJT log, the files were not present when you asked me to remove them.

Because the file name changed in some items, I checked the item in HJT, but HJT could not remove them.
Example:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {80e3bb13-2264-44f2-bc55-8e9bb4e35427} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\padinobo.dll

In the instructions, you sent, this was:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {80e3bb13-2264-44f2-bc55-8e9bb4e35427} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\denunime.dll (file missing)

So, I checked the one above, but HJT wasn't able to remove them.

I did this for all the lines you gave me. If everything was the same text, except the file name, I cheked it for deletion. (This line was not there: O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\kupusalo.dll c:\windows\system32\hiragege.dll)

Even so, HJT couldn't remove them. I think I should use these new file names in OTMoveIt3, but I wanted to ask you first.

In addition, I have asked you a couple of questions and have received no answers.

Can you explain what you think the diagnosis is?

The 4 logs are below.

Re: Browser hijacked

Unread postby Axephilic » January 5th, 2009, 6:17 pm

Hello,

DO you know why ComboFix will not run on my computer

It's due to one of the infections blocking it. I'm using another method to attack it.

The files you asked me to delete with OTMoveIt3 and HJT are no longer there. As you can see from the second HJT log, the files were not present when you asked me to remove them.

How do you know that they are no longer there? Please follow all of my instructions step by step unless you are unable to do so. If the files are not there, the OTMoveIt log will tell me so.

Can you explain what you think the diagnosis is?

The infection you have is what we call Vundo. It's being stubborn at this point, but I intend to take it out wether it likes it or not. :)

In addition, I have asked you a couple of questions and have received no answers.

I have also asked you multiple times if Magix.net is your ISP? This is important, please answer it.

Even so, HJT couldn't remove them. I think I should use these new file names in OTMoveIt3, but I wanted to ask you first.

Yes, please do NOT run any instructions or scans or anything unless I ask you to. It will only interfere with my fixes and mess them up.

  1. Double click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  2. Please copy and paste the following in the Code box into OTMoveIt3 (1).

Warning: Do not type it out to prevent any typo errors and damaging your machine.

Hello Adam:

My ISP is comcast.

Here are the logs you requested, in this order:
1.Anti-Malware
2. OTMove3It
3. HJT

I wasn't sure if you wanted to unload F-secure during these scans, so I did not unoad it. During the Anti-Malware scan, F-secure found another virus: Trojan.Win32.Agent.

Hello,

Please do not run other tools to remove the malware unless I ask you to until I give you the all clean. They will just mess up my fixes and make things more complicated, not fix the problem.

Please do NOT run scans like this again until I give you the all clean. I stated that in my first post to you.

Uninstall Bad Programs
We are going to uninstall some bad stuff now.
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if found):

    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Now you can close Add/Remove Programs.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9. Please uninstall all old versions of Adobe Reader and then you can download the newest version from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html If you already have Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition.

I know you already have Adobe Acrobat Pro 7but please install Adobe Reader just for reading, as it will be more secure and use Pro 7 to create and edit.

Close all open windows and click on Fix checked and when you get a popup window click on Yes.

Kaspersky Online Scanner
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.

Hi Adam:

1. My symptoms were ads popping up while my browser was open and pop-ups asking me to buy Antivirus 2009. That seems to have stopped. I haven't seen an ad all day. The computer seems to be running fine, so far.

I have a couple of questions:
1. What about finding the virus in the restore folder? Shouldn't I reset that restore point?
2. Why didn't F-secure, my antivirus program, find this malware?
3. What should I do with all these files in quarantine?
4. What about the win32.Agent trojans that F-secure did find? Are these really trojans, and why was I inundated while I was infected with the Vundo virus?

Hello,

1. What about finding the virus in the restore folder? Shouldn't I reset that restore point?

Indeed we will. That is a little bit later in this post.
2. Why didn't F-secure, my antivirus program, find this malware?

Anti-virus programs are not capable of detecting and removing every piece of malware out there. There are different protections for different items and sometimes, if your definitions for your proteciton programs are not up-to-date, then you are also at a risk. Some recommendations will be found below in the post for more protection tools to help keep you clean.
3. What should I do with all these files in quarantine?

You can delete them.
4. What about the win32.Agent trojans that F-secure did find? Are these really trojans, and why was I inundated while I was infected with the Vundo virus?

Win32.Agent is related to the Vundo infection you had. Yes, they are considered trojans. Some more info can be found here and here. Vundo is an always updating, pain to get rid of without the proper tools. I'm not aware of an Anti-Virus that can take care of it at this point. However, MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware can take care of it quite well. With the paid version of the software, it should remove anything as soon as it hits your computer. :) I recommend scanning your computer with MBAM every week or so.

You may want to try updating Adobe again, as that is still out-of-date. ;)

Congratulations, you are now all clean! To help to prevent from becoming reinfected, please follow the instructions below in order. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them. If after 48 hours you have not responded to this, then I will assume you have no questions and have the topic closed.

First, lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • When it prompts you to Restart, click Yes.

Flush the system restore points

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click Apply.
  5. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart your computer.
Note: Do this only ONCE, don't flush it regularly.

Keep your system updated

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Please ensure that you visit the following websites regularly or do update your system regularly.

Install the updates immediately if they are found. Reboot your computer if necessary, revisit Windows Update and Office update sites until there are no more updates to be installed.

To update Windows and office

Go to Start > All Programs > Microsoft Update

Alternatively, you can visit the link below to update Windows and Office products.

Microsoft Update

If you are forgetful, you can change some settings so that you will be informed of updates. Here's how:

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates
  2. Select Automatic (recommended) radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded and installed without prompting you.
  3. Select Download updates for me, but let me chose when to install them radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded automatically but to be installed at another time.
  4. Select Notify me but don't automatically download or install them radio button if you want to be notified of the updates.

Besides Windows that needs regular updating, antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall programs update regularly too.

Please make sure that you update your antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware programs at least once a week.

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files.

  1. Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  2. Never open emails from unknown senders.
  3. Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  4. Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Surf safely

Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Using Firefox with NoScript add-on helps to prevent most exploits from running as NoScript by default disables all scripts on all websites. If you trust the website, you can manually allow it.

If you prefer to use Internet Explorer, here are some settings to change to improve the security of Internet Explorer.

For Internet Explorer 7

Please read this article to configure Internet Explorer 7 properly.

Backup regularly

You never know when your PC will become unstable or become so infected that you can't recover it. Follow this Microsoft article to learn how to backup. Follow this article by Microsoft to restore your backups.

Alternatively, you can use 3rd-party programs to back up your data. One example can be found at Bleeping Computer.

Avoid P2P

P2P may be a great way to get lots of stuffs, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. If you do need to use them, use them sparingly. Check this list of clean and infected P2P programs if you need to use one.

Prevent a re-infection

  1. Winpatrol
Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

  2. Hosts File
A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

    Here are some Hosts files:

    MVPS Hosts File
    Bluetack's Hosts File
    Bluetack's Host Manager
    hpHosts

A tutorial about Hosts File can be found at Malware Removal.

  3. Spybot Search and Destroy
Spybot Search & Destroy is another program for scanning spywares and adwares. Not only so, it has other preventive options as well. You are strongly encouraged to run a scan at least once per week.

Spybot Search & Destroy can be downloaded from here.

If you need help in using Spybot Search & Destroy, you can read Spybot Search and Destroy tutorial at Bleeping Computer.

Before downloading any anti-spyware programs, always check the Rogue/Suspect list of anti-spyware programs and Malwarebytes RogueNET. This will save you from a lot of trouble. If in doubt, don't ever download it.

  4. SiteHound Toolbar
SiteHound is a toolbar that warns you if you go to a site that is known to scam people, that has potentially lots of viruses or spywares or has questionable contents. If you know the site, you can enter it; if you don't, it will bring you back to the previous page. Currently, SiteHound works for Internet Explorer and Firefox only.
